Early hair shedding can take one to two weeks to appear, and visible reduction typically takes multiple treatments.
How often should you use an IPL device?
Check the user manual and treatment plan for your specific model before starting. IPL devices can have different schedules, and using one brand’s plan for another device may mean treating too often or not often enough.

For the Lumea models covered by its support answer, Philips says using the device more often than specified will not improve performance or speed results. Philips also advises against treating the same area multiple times in one session: it does not improve performance and increases the risk of skin reactions. Use the interval in your model’s manual rather than adding extra sessions.

When will you see IPL results?
Results develop over repeated sessions rather than appearing immediately. Philips says users of the Lumea models covered by its guidance may see treated hairs shed one to two weeks after the first session, noticeable reduction after two to three treatments, and significant reduction after four treatments. These are Philips’ expectations, not a guarantee; individual results vary.
The intervals are part of the treatment plan. Philips says its schedule is designed to treat hairs as they enter the growth phase. A missed session or different model may change the timing, so use the instructions supplied for your device rather than treating early to try to catch up.

IPL is long-term reduction, not guaranteed permanent removal
Philips describes Lumea IPL as providing long-term hair reduction, not permanent hair removal. Hair growth cycles can activate follicles over time, so occasional maintenance may be needed to sustain results. Philips reports up to 18 months of smooth skin with maintenance for the models listed on its support page; that is a manufacturer claim for those models, not a general guarantee for IPL devices.
Check whether your skin and hair are suitable
Compatibility depends on the specific model. Review its skin-tone and hair-colour chart before treatment, and do not assume that a device suitable for one person or model is suitable for another. For example, Philips’ SC1994/80 documentation says that model cannot treat white or gray, light-blonde, or red hair and is not suitable for very dark skin.

Before your first session
- Identify the exact device model and read its manual, treatment schedule, and skin/hair compatibility chart.
- Record the recommended session dates so you can follow the full initial phase and maintenance plan.
- Do not add sessions or repeatedly flash the same area in one session unless your model’s instructions specifically direct you to do so.
- Allow time for shedding and gradual reduction; judge progress against your device’s guidance rather than expecting instant removal.
