Use 300–500 miles (about 480–800 km) as a reminder to check your running shoes, not as a fixed expiration date. Replace them sooner if the tread, midsole or structure is visibly worn, or if they no longer feel comfortable and supportive. The right timing depends on how you run and use the shoes.
How many miles do running shoes last?
ASICS, REI and Brooks give a broad guideline of 300–500 miles. It is a practical checkpoint, not a universal threshold: runner, terrain, shoe design and total use all affect how quickly a pair wears out. The cited figures are retailer and manufacturer recommendations, not a scientifically established lifespan for every shoe.

REI’s examples put minimalist shoes nearer 300 miles and traditional or maximum-cushion shoes nearer 500. Treat those as rough guidance rather than promises. ASICS cautions that extra cushioning does not automatically make a shoe last longer.

What signs mean it is time to replace them?
Check the outsole
- Look for tread that has become smooth or noticeably worn down.
- Replace the shoes if the outsole rubber has worn through to the softer midsole.
- Compare both shoes: uneven wear can indicate that the pair is no longer sitting or wearing evenly.
Check the midsole and shape
- Look for compressed or creased cushioning, unevenness, or a midsole that feels soft and collapsed.
- Set the shoes on a flat surface and check whether either one leans or no longer stands straight.
- Inspect the heel and upper for torn fabric or lost structure.
ASICS’s 2024 article attributes a more specific check to the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine: replace a shoe if the outsole has worn through to the midsole or if one side of the heel differs from the other by more than 4 millimeters. ASICS is the source for that attribution; the underlying AAPSM document was not independently reviewed here. Read ASICS’s wear-check guidance.
Pay attention to how they feel
A shoe that feels flat, less supportive or markedly different from when it was new may have lost cushioning or structure. New discomfort or soreness is another reason to inspect the pair, but soreness alone does not establish that worn shoes are the cause. Consider whether your training, route or other conditions have changed too.

Why does replacement timing vary?
Mileage is only one part of shoe use. ASICS, REI and Brooks identify several factors that can change wear, but do not quantify how many miles each one adds or subtracts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Running frequency and total distance: more use means the shoe reaches a mileage checkpoint sooner.
- Surface: ASICS says paved routes can wear shoes faster than off-road running.
- Shoe construction and running style: design and how you run affect which parts of a shoe take wear.
- Body size: the cited sources identify it as a factor, but do not provide a formula for adjusting the mileage range.
- Everyday use: walking, work or casual wear adds use beyond your recorded running miles.
How to decide when to replace your pair
- Track approximate running mileage. Use 300–500 miles as a prompt to inspect the shoes, not a deadline you must reach before replacing them.
- Inspect the outsole, midsole, shape and upper. Look for worn-through rubber, compressed cushioning, unevenness, collapse or damaged fabric.
- Notice changes in comfort and support. If the shoes feel markedly different or you develop new soreness, assess the shoes alongside any changes in training or terrain.
- Count all substantial use. If you also wear the pair for walking, work or everyday activities, mileage from running alone understates how much use they have had.
- Replace based on the evidence in front of you. Pronounced wear or a shoe that no longer feels right is a reason to replace it even before the mileage checkpoint.
Sources and scope
The 300–500-mile guidance and wear indicators come from ASICS (March 11, 2021), REI Expert Advice (publication date not shown) and Brooks Running (publication date not shown). Brooks also describes four to six months of regular use as typical for performance shoes; the calendar estimate varies with activity and is not a separate guarantee. The more specific heel-wear attribution is from ASICS (October 10, 2024).
