For Stan’s standard sealant, the company advises topping off every 2–7 months; it suggests checking or refreshing every three months as a preventative schedule for most riders. Those are Stan’s recommendations, not a universal rule.
Start with the sealant maker’s schedule
Sealant formulas differ, so use the product instructions as your baseline rather than assuming every tire needs a refill on the same date. Stan’s gives different guidance for its standard and Race Day sealants; SILCA also distinguishes between topping off and a periodic system cleanout.

| Product and source | Manufacturer’s timing | Application or cleanout guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Stan’s standard sealant, Stan’s Tubeless Guide and Sealant Support (accessed 2026) | Top off every 2–7 months; Stan’s says average in-tire life is 2–6 months and suggests checking or refreshing every three months for most riders. | Stan’s says it can be topped off through the valve stem with a bottle or injector. |
| Stan’s Race Day, Stan’s Tubeless Guide (accessed 2026) | Inspect every two weeks. | Its larger crystals make it incompatible with an injector; Stan’s instructs users to pour it in through a partly unseated tire bead. |
| SILCA Ultimate Tubeless Sealant, SILCA product page and installation instructions (accessed 2026) | SILCA states a tested in-tire lifespan of 6+ months; it says to top off at that point or after sealant loss. | SILCA recommends cleaning the tire and restarting its Ultimate Tubeless Sealant with FiberFoam system after one year. |
These are manufacturer-published instructions and estimates for named products, not independent evidence of a lifespan that applies across brands. Use the directions for the exact product and formula you have.
What can make sealant need attention sooner?
Useful life varies with temperature and humidity, how often you ride, storage temperature, tire casing, and sealant lost while closing punctures. Stan’s notes that cooler storage helps and that porous tires may need a refresh shortly after setup.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s first tubeless sealant and the first choice of riders today
- Recommended for all-around use, compatible with all tubeless road, gravel, and mountain bike tires
- Seals punctures up to 6.5mm (¼”)
- Compatible with valve installation using Stan’s Tubeless Sealant Injector
- Remains liquid inside tires for 2-7 months for long-lasting protection)
- Check sooner after a puncture has discharged a substantial amount of sealant.
- Inspect the setup if the tire begins losing air faster between rides. That change warrants a check, but by itself it does not prove the sealant has dried out.
- Consider your tire casing and storage conditions when deciding whether to inspect before the maker’s longest stated interval.
How to check and top off without mixing up methods
Confirm the application method in the instructions before buying an injector or removing a valve core. Stan’s standard sealant can be added through the valve stem, but its Race Day formula must be poured through a partly unseated bead. Instructions for one formula should not be assumed to apply to another brand.
- Identify the exact sealant formula in the tire and find its manufacturer’s current instructions.
- Inspect at the interval specified for that formula, and sooner if puncture-related sealant loss or faster air loss gives you reason to check.
- Use the stated application method. For valve-stem filling, verify that the formula permits it; for Stan’s Race Day, use the bead-pour method described by Stan’s.
- Keep topping off distinct from a full cleanout. Follow a cleanout schedule only when the product’s instructions call for one, such as SILCA’s one-year recommendation for its FiberFoam system.
When is a full cleanout different from a top-off?
A top-off replenishes a product that remains in the tire; a cleanout removes the existing material and restarts the system. The timing is product-specific: SILCA recommends cleaning the tire and starting its Ultimate Tubeless Sealant with FiberFoam system over after one year. Do not treat that instruction as a routine requirement for every sealant.
Rank #2
- Long-lasting latex formula provides superior durability, staying effective for 2-3 times longer than standard sealants to minimize maintenance and downtime. 60-120 days between top-offs.
- Contains advanced nanite particles engineered to rapidly seal punctures up to 1/4" and slices up to 1/2", ensuring reliable performance across a variety of trail and road conditions.
- Developed with eco-friendly, biodegradable ingredients, this sealant offers an environmentally conscious choice without sacrificing sealing performance or safety.
- Optimized for performance in varying temperatures and riding environments, making it an ideal choice for endurance cycling, mountain biking, and gravel adventures.
- Compatible with all major tubeless-ready and UST tire brands and engineered to work across a wide range of rubber compounds. Orange Seal adheres to the tire casing seal punctures to effectively without causing delamination, breakdown, or damage to the rubber, maintaining the integrity and performance of the tire over time.
Why regular inspection matters
Tubeless sealant is a consumable maintenance item, not a set-and-forget part of the setup. Cycling Weekly quoted Jeff Schneider of Cadex Cycling in its 2026 article: “A common misconception is that tubeless systems are set-and-forget,” said Schneider. “In reality, sealant is a consumable maintenance item, much like chain lubricant. Periodic inspection and replenishment are essential to maintaining puncture protection and optimal system performance.” Cycling Weekly’s article also reports comparative product testing; its test results should be understood as that publication’s findings, not as manufacturer instructions or a universal lifespan ranking.
