There is no universal maintenance schedule for 3D printers. Follow the manual for your exact model, using print hours as well as calendar time to plan routine checks. Keep the build surface clean, inspect the parts the manufacturer identifies, and lubricate only designated components with the specified product. A filament printer’s maintenance steps do not automatically apply to a resin printer.
How often should you maintain a 3D printer?
Use the interval in your printer’s manual, then adjust for actual use and the conditions the manufacturer identifies. Print hours can be more useful than a calendar-only schedule: a machine that runs daily may need attention sooner than one used occasionally. Material residue, observed wear, and print problems can also change when a check is due.

Manufacturer schedules vary by model. For example, Prusa’s MK3.5/S guidance calls for inspecting and maintaining components every couple hundred hours of print time. The UltiMaker S7 manual’s preventive-maintenance schedule assumes 1,500 printing hours per year and recommends more frequent maintenance when use is higher. These are model-specific examples, not an industry-wide standard.

| Example interval | What the manufacturer specifies | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Every couple hundred print hours | Inspect and maintain components; the support page does not state a publication year. | Prusa MK3.5/S [Prusa maintenance guide] |
| Schedule based on 1,500 printing hours per year | Preventive-maintenance schedule; the manual recommends more frequent care for heavier use. Manual revision 1.2; publication year not stated in the retrieved document metadata. | UltiMaker S7 [S7 installation and user manual] |
| Monthly after the first year | Lubricate the X, Y, and Z axles with supplied oil; the manual says lubrication is not needed during the first year. | UltiMaker S7, manual revision 1.2 [S7 installation and user manual] |
| Every three months | Includes short-belt tension and axle-play checks, nozzle-cover inspection, feeder cleaning, and Z lead-screw lubrication. | UltiMaker S7, manual revision 1.2 [S7 installation and user manual] |
| Every 600–800 print hours | Check and optionally reconnect specified board connectors; this advanced task requires turning the printer off and unplugging it first. | Prusa MK3.5/S only; follow the model’s instructions and do not open electronics unless you can do so safely [Prusa maintenance guide] |
The Prusa support page and Formlabs support page cited here do not state publication dates; the UltiMaker source identifies revision 1.2 but not a publication year. Check your current model’s own manual rather than transferring these intervals to another printer.

What should you check on a filament printer?
Build surface and visible debris
Keep the print surface clean using the cleaning method specified for its material and design. Prusa recommends regularly cleaning its flexible steel sheets, but the appropriate washing solution and method vary by sheet type. Remove visible debris during regular cleanup rather than letting residue build up.
Belts and moving parts
Inspect belts and moving components at the interval in the manual. The check depends on the printer: Prusa says the X- and Y-axis belts on the MK3.5/S should sound like a low bass note when plucked. UltiMaker’s S7 schedule calls for checking short-belt tension every three months and checking axle play. Do not use one model’s tension test as a procedure for another machine.

Feeder or extruder residue
Filament shavings can collect around feeding components. Clean them only as directed for your printer. Prusa specifies a brass brush for its extruder gears; UltiMaker calls for opening and cleaning the S7 feeder with a small brush on its maintenance schedule. A brush appropriate for one component may not be suitable for another.
Lubrication and cables
Lubricants are not interchangeable, and not every moving part should be lubricated. The UltiMaker S7 manual specifies supplied oil for its axles and warns that other oils or grease may affect the axle coating. Prusa warns against oil-based lubricant in the MK3.5/S extruder gear area because it can spread toward filament-feeding parts. Follow the manual for the exact component and product; do not assume rods, rails, bearings, gears, and lead screws all use the same lubricant.

Check cables and connectors only if the manual lists them as a maintenance item. Prusa’s MK3.5/S guide places checks of specified board connectors at 600–800 print hours and instructs users to switch off and unplug the printer first. This is model-specific, advanced work—not a reason to open the electronics of a different printer.
When should you check or replace the nozzle?
Do not replace a nozzle on a fixed calendar. Prusa says nozzle life depends on print volume, filament type, and how often filament types are changed. If print quality deteriorates, clean and inspect the printer according to its maintenance guidance before treating the nozzle as the cause. Consider replacement when poor quality persists after the other prescribed maintenance and the nozzle’s condition supports it.

How does resin-printer maintenance differ?
Resin printers have different consumables and contamination risks from filament (FDM) printers, so do not apply FDM belt, feeder, or lubrication steps indiscriminately. Formlabs’ guide for the Form 3L and Form 3BL calls for checking the build platform for liquid resin, tackiness, or cured resin before each print, as well as monthly and symptom-triggered checks. Use the procedure for your specific resin printer: Formlabs maintenance schedule for Form 3L/Form 3BL.

A practical way to plan maintenance
- Find the exact model’s manual. Use its schedule and permitted cleaning and lubrication methods as the baseline.
- Track print hours if the manual uses them. Do not convert a print-hour interval into a universal calendar interval.
- Do routine cleanup. Remove visible debris and clean the build surface using its specified method.
- Do scheduled inspections. Check only the belts, axes, feeder, cover, cables, or other parts named for your printer.
- Respond to symptoms. If print quality changes, diagnose and clean before assuming a nozzle needs replacement.
- Keep technology-specific procedures separate. Use a resin-printer maintenance guide for resin machines, not an FDM checklist.
