There is no universally best interval. Check high-priority, fast-moving products often enough to act on meaningful changes; check stable, low-priority products less often. A daily check is a reasonable starting point for important, relatively stable items. More frequent collection—including hourly—makes sense only when prices change repeatedly and your team or system can respond at that speed.
Choose a cadence that matches change and response speed
Monitoring frequency is a business decision, not a fixed industry standard. Vendor guidance offers useful operating examples, but no independent benchmark establishes one ideal interval for every retailer or category. Price2Spy says daily checks can be adequate for stable assortments; its guidance also describes hourly automated repricing for electronics as a possible fit when a business can act quickly. Those are examples, not universal rules. (Price2Spy on monitoring frequency; Price2Spy on real-time monitoring)

| Product or situation | Starting cadence | How to adjust |
|---|---|---|
| Important items with a stable assortment and low price volatility | Daily is a reasonable starting point. | Use a slower scheduled review for low-priority items if a change would rarely lead to action. (Price2Spy) |
| High-sales, contested, promotion-heavy, or repeatedly changing items | More than daily when useful; hourly collection is an option to consider, not a default. | Use a faster interval only if your team or repricing system can make timely decisions. Price2Spy contrasts hourly automated repricing with a retailer that changes prices manually twice a week, for whom hourly checks may offer little value. (Price2Spy) |
| Long-tail products that are rarely compared | Lower-frequency scheduled review. | Increase frequency if sales, competition, or observed changes make the item more important. (Price2Spy) |
| Competitor launches, removals, and catalog changes | Set a separate schedule based on category change rate and the value of early detection. | Available vendor materials describe monitoring assortment events but do not establish a universal interval. (Competera) |
To tune the initial schedule, track how often meaningful changes occur, how many alerts result in action, and whether staff can handle the review workload. If extra checks produce little useful action, reduce frequency; if important changes are consistently discovered too late, increase it where your workflow can respond.

What to check alongside price
A price is useful only when you know what offer it represents. Compare the same product and variant, and record conditions that could change the effective offer. Price monitoring guidance describes capturing contextual details such as promotions, availability, and the source listing rather than treating a displayed figure in isolation. Choose a manual or automated monitoring method
Manual checking can work for a small assortment and a team that makes decisions periodically. Scheduled or automated monitoring becomes more relevant as the number of products, competitors, or meaningful changes grows. Neither method is automatically better: the useful choice is the one that provides reliable, actionable information at a manageable workload.
Compare options using these criteria:
- Refresh interval and whether it matches how quickly you can act.
- Coverage of the competitors and sales channels that matter to you.
- Product-match quality, including variant handling.
- Capture of promotions and availability, not just displayed price.
- Whether records include source and observation time, and whether alerts are useful.
- How the system identifies missing or stale sources and how much review the output requires.
Vendor materials describe price and assortment monitoring capabilities, but features and plan details can change. Check a provider’s current documentation before relying on a particular capability. These criteria help assess fit; they are not a tested ranking of monitoring services. (Price2Spy; Competera)

Keep repricing decisions controlled
Faster data collection does not, by itself, make a pricing decision sound. The European Commission’s issue paper on pricing algorithms is relevant to businesses using automated pricing: treat repricing as a process that needs appropriate oversight, rather than assuming that every observed competitor change should trigger an automatic response.
