For YouTube Live, target one keyframe every 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. In FFmpeg, set the GOP size with -g, using the stream’s actual output frame rate: use -g 60 at 30 fps or -g 120 at 60 fps for a two-second interval. Use a closed GOP when your encoder supports it, then verify the emitted stream rather than assuming the command-line setting guarantees the result.
Convert YouTube’s two-second interval into FFmpeg frames
YouTube Help recommends a two-second keyframe frequency for live streams and says not to exceed four seconds. A keyframe interval is a duration; FFmpeg’s -g value is a number of frames. Multiply the output frame rate by the desired interval in seconds:
| Output frame rate | Two-second target | Four-second maximum |
|---|---|---|
| 30 fps | -g 60 |
120 frames |
| 60 fps | -g 120 |
240 frames |
YouTube explicitly gives 60 frames at 30 fps as the two-second equivalent. The 60 fps values follow the same calculation. If your output frame rate differs, calculate the frame count from that rate; if it changes during the stream, reassess the cadence against the actual output.
Set the GOP size in FFmpeg
Use the option with your selected encoder
For an FFmpeg command whose output is 30 fps, set -g 60; for 60 fps, set -g 120. Place the option in the output’s encoding options and ensure it applies to the video stream sent to YouTube. FFmpeg documents GOP size as the maximum distance between keyframes, so -g sets a maximum spacing; by itself, it does not prove that keyframes are emitted at a perfectly fixed two-second cadence.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check encoder-specific behavior and GOP closure
Encoder options and behavior can vary by encoder and FFmpeg build. If you need a fixed cadence, check the documentation for the encoder you selected and confirm how it interprets GOP and keyframe settings. Configure a closed GOP when supported: YouTube says its live-stream pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. Do not assume that setting -g alone makes the GOP closed.
Verify the stream YouTube actually receives
- Confirm the output frame rate. Calculate the frame interval from the rate being emitted, not just the rate you intended to configure. At 30 fps, the two-second target is 60 frames; at 60 fps, it is 120.
- Confirm the selected encoder’s settings. Check the local FFmpeg and encoder documentation for how GOP length, keyframe placement, and closed-GOP behavior are controlled. The exact controls beyond
-gdepend on the encoder. - Test with representative content. YouTube recommends testing the encoder with representative movement. Check stream health during the test and watch for YouTube’s keyframe-frequency warning.
- Adjust and retest if YouTube reports a problem. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds or less, verify the corresponding frame count at the actual output rate, and confirm the outgoing stream follows that cadence.
A configured maximum GOP size is not a substitute for checking the emitted stream: encoder behavior and output frame rate both matter.

Keep live-stream settings separate from upload settings
Use YouTube’s live-ingestion guidance for a live stream, not its separate upload-encoding recommendation. The upload guidance says “GOP of half the frame rate”; the live-stream guidance instead recommends a two-second keyframe interval. They describe different contexts and should not be treated as interchangeable settings.
Other live encoder settings that affect setup
YouTube’s live encoder settings page lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for live encoder bitrate. Match the keyframe calculation to the frame rate you actually send, and consult YouTube’s current resolution and frame-rate bitrate guidance for the rest of the encoder configuration. The keyframe interval alone cannot establish that the overall stream is correctly configured.

Troubleshoot keyframe warnings and mismatches
- YouTube reports keyframes are too far apart: Set a two-second target and do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum. Recalculate
-gusing the actual output frame rate. - The frame rate changes: Recalculate the frame count for the rate being emitted. A value chosen for 30 fps does not represent two seconds at 60 fps.
-gis set, but the warning persists: The option defines maximum GOP spacing, not necessarily an exact fixed cadence. Check the selected encoder’s behavior and inspect or otherwise verify the outgoing stream.- The GOP is open: Configure a closed GOP if the encoder supports it; YouTube says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding.
- The stream is unstable for reasons beyond keyframes: Test with representative movement and monitor YouTube stream health. Also check bitrate and the other encoder settings against YouTube’s current live guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded-video YouTube stream that needs to stay live, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
