Can YouTube Issue a Copyright Strike During a Live Stream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes. YouTube can issue a copyright strike when it removes an active live stream in response to a valid copyright removal request. A live stream can also be interrupted or terminated after YouTube detects third-party material without a strike being applied. Check YouTube Studio and the email notice from YouTube to find out which happened.

What can happen while a stream is live?

YouTube says it scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the material. If the material remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. That action alone does not establish that your channel received a copyright strike. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance advises checking Studio if a stream stops.

Interruption, Content ID claim, and strike: what is the difference?

Event When and how it happens What it can mean for your channel What to check or do
Live match or warning While the broadcast is running, YouTube detects third-party material, which may include another live broadcast. YouTube may show a placeholder, issue a warning, and then interrupt or terminate the stream if the material remains. This does not by itself confirm a strike. Check YouTube Studio and your email for the account status and notice.
Copyright removal request accepted A rights holder submits a legal removal request; YouTube reviews it and removes the content if the request appears valid. The removal results in a copyright strike. If the removed content was an active live stream, live-streaming access is restricted for seven days; a further copyright strike extends that restriction to 14 days. Read the notice and follow the options and deadlines it gives.
Content ID claim on an archived live stream If you choose to archive a live stream, YouTube says Content ID claims are made after the stream ends. A Content ID claim typically does not result in a copyright strike. Review the claim in Studio and use the options presented there if you believe it is incorrect.

YouTube explains that it distinguishes copyright removal requests from Content ID claims. Its removal-request guidance says automated systems use machine learning to process requests and that a trained human reviewer evaluates requests when the systems are unsure whether they are valid. Read YouTube’s explanation of copyright removal requests.

What to do if YouTube stops your live stream

  1. Check YouTube Studio. Look for an active copyright strike, removed content, or a notice about a live interruption. YouTube also says it emails creators about strikes. A stopped stream is not enough to tell which outcome occurred.
  2. Read the specific notice. Determine whether YouTube interrupted the broadcast after a live match, applied a strike after a removal request, or placed a claim on an archived stream. Deadlines and available actions depend on the notice.
  3. If you have a license, contact the rights owner about allowlisting. Ask them to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist before you stream. YouTube says licensed content can still trigger an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted, including when the stream is limited to territories where you have the necessary rights. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream matches and allowlisting.
  4. Use the resolution route that fits the notice. YouTube lists completing Copyright School and waiting 90 days, obtaining a retraction from the claimant, or submitting a valid counter notification as ways a strike may be resolved. A scheduled removal request can give you seven days to take the action specified in the notice before a strike is applied. Once a standard strike has been applied, deleting the content does not resolve it.

When should you submit a counter notification?

A counter notification is a legal request asking YouTube to reinstate content removed after a copyright removal request. YouTube says to use it when you believe the removal was mistaken, including where you think a copyright exception such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain applies. It is not simply a way to dispute an interruption or a Content ID claim, and it should be submitted only if you have a valid basis. Read YouTube’s counter-notification guidance carefully before proceeding.

Whether a particular use is licensed, lawful, or covered by an exception depends on its facts. YouTube’s procedures do not decide that question for you; consider getting qualified legal advice if the consequences are significant.

Does a license guarantee that a live stream will stay up?

No. YouTube says a licensed stream may still be interrupted by automated matching if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Arrange allowlisting in advance, and keep documentation of your license. A license and allowlisting address different issues: the license concerns your permission to use the content, while allowlisting can help prevent the rights owner’s Content ID system from matching your channel.

Keep a stream running without ignoring copyright risk

Automation does not grant rights or prevent YouTube enforcement. If a stream is interrupted, check Studio and the account notice rather than assuming that a streaming tool caused—or resolved—a copyright issue. For a 24/7 pre-recorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: you upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded content from the cloud, but you still need the necessary rights and should arrange allowlisting where appropriate. Learn more at StreamNeo.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload your video, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube at the quality you made them, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. It does not provide permission to use copyrighted material, so check rights and account notices as usual. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
