For a public-access AED in the UK, Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) recommends checks in line with the manufacturer’s guidance; its primary-care standard specifies checks at least weekly. The British Heart Foundation (BHF) also recommends a weekly physical check, while the device’s manual sets the self-test and servicing instructions. There is no universal annual servicing interval established by this guidance.
How often should a public AED be checked?
For public and community use, follow the exact model’s instructions and any local organizational requirements. RCUK’s community standard calls for appropriate checks in line with manufacturer guidance and recommends signed, dated checklists to monitor functionality and expiry dates.

BHF recommends a weekly physical inspection. That is distinct from an AED’s automatic self-test schedule: consult the user manual for how often the device self-tests and what its indicators mean. AEDs do not all perform the same tests or signal problems in the same way.

- Primary care: RCUK says equipment checks should be at least weekly, with frequency tailored to local circumstances, named responsibility and reliable cover. The standard directs users to manufacturer instructions for use, storage, servicing and expiry.
- Community or public setting: RCUK says to check according to manufacturer guidance and recommends signed, dated records of functionality and expiry monitoring.
- Acute care: RCUK says check frequency should be determined locally. This is an acute-care standard, not the public-community rule.
These are UK recommendations for particular settings, not a universal interval for every country or organization. Check local requirements where the AED is deployed.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What to include in a routine physical check
Assign the check to a named person and arrange cover so it is not missed. Use the device manual and your organization’s checklist; a typical physical inspection should cover:
- Check the status indicator and look for alarms, error marks, flashing lights or other failure signals. Interpret them using the manual for that model.
- Inspect the AED and its case for visible damage or signs that it has been used.
- Confirm that associated emergency kit is present.
- Check electrode-pad expiry dates and replace pads when required. Keep compatible replacements available.
- Record the check, device function and expiry information on a signed, dated checklist where your organization follows the RCUK community standard.
- Follow the manual for self-tests, storage, servicing, accessory replacement and actions after use.
A ready-status light is useful, but it does not replace the physical inspection: it may not confirm that every accessory is present and in date. Likewise, an automatic self-test does not necessarily cover every issue a physical check can reveal.

Does an AED need annual professional servicing?
The cited UK guidance does not establish an annual service interval for every public AED. Technical servicing, accessory replacement and post-use actions depend on the manufacturer’s current instructions for the exact model and any applicable local rules. Do not assume that a calendar-based annual service is required—or that it is unnecessary—without checking those requirements.

That is a purchasing specification, not a servicing schedule for all AEDs already in use.

What to do if a check fails or the AED has been used
If the device signals a fault, is damaged, appears to have been used, has expired pads, or is covered by a safety alert, follow its model-specific instructions promptly. Arrange compatible replacement parts, repair or another suitable way to restore AED availability. Have the model and serial number ready when contacting the manufacturer.
In the United States, the FDA advises checking that the AED and its accessories are FDA-approved and obtaining needed accessories from authorized retailers. Requirements and available models vary by jurisdiction.

A 2017 UK MHRA alert about LIFEPAK 1000 devices described a battery-contact fault and temporary checks, including weekly battery removal and reinstallation while repair arrangements were pending. Those instructions applied to the named device and alert period; they are not general directions for other AEDs. The practical lesson is to act on current safety notices and the manual for the particular device.

What to compare when choosing an AED or support arrangement
If you are selecting equipment or a service arrangement, compare the maintenance details that determine whether the AED can be kept ready:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Self-tests and status reporting: what the device checks automatically, how often it checks, and how clearly it indicates a failure.
- Consumables: compatible pad and battery availability, expiry or shelf-life terms, replacement cost, and whether pads can be pre-connected. Verify compatibility for the exact AED.
- Fault support: repair, replacement, loan-device and consumable response arrangements, and whether maintenance is chargeable during the warranty.
- Deployment needs: public accessibility, cabinet and location conditions, registration, and the checks required by the organization responsible for the AED.
RCUK’s 2026 community procurement guide specifies at least two years of compatible-pad shelf life from supply and an average maximum two-working-day response to a reported unit error for repair, replacement, loan equipment or consumables. The Department for Education’s school specification similarly lists 24 months’ pad shelf life from supply and no chargeable maintenance during the standard warranty. These are procurement specifications; they do not mean every in-service pad lasts two years or that a two-day repair deadline applies universally.
