What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no single refresh interval that suits every crypto market dashboard. Use a provider’s WebSocket stream for live prices, trades, or order-book changes when available; for REST polling, respect the endpoint’s update behavior and request limits. Set slower-changing summaries and metadata on separate schedules, and show when each value was last updated.
Choose a refresh method for each kind of data
A dashboard is not one data point: prices, trades, order books, market summaries, and metadata may come from different endpoints and update at different rates. Set a policy for each field rather than making the fastest-changing value dictate how often the entire dashboard requests data.
Live prices, trades, and order books
When the provider offers the symbols and fields you need, use its persistent WebSocket feed. It can deliver changes as events arrive, rather than requiring repeated REST requests for information intended to be live. The actual cadence is still bounded by the provider’s feed and behavior; a stream does not guarantee a particular latency. See the [Binance WebSocket Market Streams](https://github.com/binance/binance-spot-api-docs/blob/master/web-socket-streams.md?plain=1), [Coinbase Exchange WebSocket feeds](https://help.coinbase.com/en/developer-platform/websocket-feeds/exchange), and [CoinGecko data delivery](https://www.coingecko.com/en/api/data-delivery) documentation for provider-specific options.
REST-only data
Poll no faster than the endpoint’s documented freshness and your use case require. A shorter timer does not necessarily produce fresher data: the endpoint may update less often, and extra requests can consume rate limits. Binance notes that endpoint data sources vary and that request weights and rate limits apply. Its [Spot REST API documentation](https://developers.binance.info/en/docs/products/spot/rest-api) says clients receiving HTTP 429 must back off rather than continue sending requests.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Summaries and metadata
Use a slower schedule for fields that do not need to change with every trade, such as descriptive metadata or broader summaries. Keep their refresh policy independent of the live-price stream so that a fast-moving field does not trigger unnecessary requests for every card, table, or label.
Why update timing varies
Update cadence depends on the specific provider, endpoint, field, plan, and delivery method. Some feeds emit events when market activity occurs; others provide periodic updates. A provider’s stated refresh rate is not automatically a target for every dashboard or asset.

Examples from provider documentation
- Coinbase says its Exchange heartbeat channel updates once per second for specific products. Its ticker channel updates when bids and offers are matched, and batches match cascades. These are behaviors of Coinbase’s documented channels, not a universal refresh recommendation. See [Coinbase Exchange WebSocket feeds](https://help.coinbase.com/en/developer-platform/websocket-feeds/exchange).
- CoinGecko lists a 30-second update frequency for its simple/price endpoint on Pro plans, subject to availability. This is a plan- and endpoint-specific example, not a guarantee for every asset or provider. Check [CoinGecko API pricing](https://www.coingecko.com/en/api/pricing) for current terms.
These examples do not establish a best universal interval—such as one second, five seconds, or one minute. Nor do they establish a shared latency guarantee across providers, assets, plans, or regions. Tell users which source supplies a value and how recently it was updated rather than implying that all data is universally “real time.”
Set a polling schedule without overloading the API
- Identify the endpoint and its data source. Check how the provider says that endpoint is populated and refreshed. Do not assume every endpoint from one provider has the same cadence.
- Check the current limits. Review request weights, rate-limit intervals, and any plan restrictions that apply to the exact endpoint or stream. Limits can change; use the provider’s current documentation rather than copying a figure from another API.
- Choose a cadence that fits the data. For live fields, prefer a supported stream. For REST fields, choose a polling interval that fits the endpoint’s behavior and your freshness need instead of making requests as frequently as possible.
- Handle HTTP 429 responses by backing off. Binance explicitly says clients have an obligation to back off after a 429. Do not immediately repeat the same request in a tight loop; follow the provider’s instructions and resume conservatively.
- Show freshness and detect interruptions. Display the source and last-updated time where a stale quote could be mistaken for a current one. Mark values stale if a feed disconnects or no update arrives within an expected window. This is a useful dashboard design safeguard, not a timing standard set by the cited providers.
Plan for WebSocket reconnects
A WebSocket connection can end, so a dashboard needs a recovery path as well as a streaming path. Binance’s Spot market-stream documentation says connections are valid for 24 hours and describes operational limits including up to 1,024 streams per connection and limits on incoming client messages. These are Binance-specific connection constraints, not recommendations for how often market values should refresh. See [Binance WebSocket Market Streams](https://github.com/binance/binance-spot-api-docs/blob/master/web-socket-streams.md?plain=1) for the applicable details.

On disconnect, stop presenting the last received value as current, reconnect according to the provider’s documented rules, and make the stale state visible until updates resume. Connection and subscription limits vary by API; Binance’s WebSocket API, for example, documents connection-attempt limits for that API. Do not apply one API’s operational limits to another—check the relevant [Binance WebSocket API documentation](https://github.com/binance/binance-spot-api-docs/blob/master/web-socket-api.md).

- Coverage: Confirm that the provider supports the exchanges, markets, symbols, and fields the dashboard needs.
- Delivery and cadence: Check whether each field is available over a stream or REST and what update behavior the provider documents.
- Limits: Compare REST request weights, rate limits, stream subscription limits, and plan restrictions for the actual APIs you will use.
- Recovery: Find the provider’s reconnection and resubscription requirements, then decide how the interface will show stale or unavailable data.
- Plan details: Recheck update frequency, availability, pricing, and limits before relying on a paid-plan figure; provider terms can change.
For instance, Coinbase’s market-data connections page describes subscription tiers and notes changes effective June 24, 2024. Treat that information as specific to its service and verify the current [Coinbase Market Data Connections](https://help.coinbase.com/en/exchange/managing-my-account/market-data-connections) details before building around a tier or limit.
