You should not automate searches of Google Images’ consumer results page without express permission. Google classifies automated scraping of Search results as machine-generated traffic that violates its spam policies and Terms of Service. For ordinary image research, use Google Images manually, then check permission on the original hosting page. If you are an existing Custom Search JSON API customer, Google documents a programmatic image-search option, but it is closed to new customers and scheduled for transition by January 1, 2027.
Can you scrape Google Images?
Not as an ordinary, unsupported script that repeatedly queries Google Search. Google Search Central says automated access to Google Search without express permission, including scraping results, violates its spam policies and Terms of Service. Google explains: “Machine-generated traffic consumes resources and interferes with our ability to best serve users.” It also says of the automated activity it describes: “Such activities violate our spam policies and the Google Terms of Service.” Read the Google Search spam policies.

Google’s Terms of Service also address automated access that conflicts with machine-readable instructions and warn against using its services or content to violate intellectual-property or privacy rights. This guide therefore does not provide a browser-automation script, selectors, or instructions for bypassing access controls. The official sources do not establish a supported or stable interface for scraping the consumer results page.
Choose the right way to find images

Direct automated scraping of Google’s live results page is not a comparable recommended route: Google’s policy identifies scraping Search results without express permission as a violation.

How to find images you can legally use
- Decide whether you need automation. For a few images or general discovery, use Google Images manually. Do not script repeated Google Search requests without express permission.
- Search and narrow the results. Enter a descriptive query in Google Images and use the filters available in the interface. The API documentation describes image-type, size, color, dominant-color, and rights filters for API users; interface controls may differ or change.
- Open the original hosting page. A thumbnail or preview is a lead, not proof of ownership or permission. Google says image previews are selected automatically; visit the page hosting the image and locate its own licensing information.
- Verify the terms before downloading or republishing. Check who owns or licenses the image, whether your intended use is permitted, whether commercial use is restricted, whether edits are allowed, and what attribution is required. If the terms are unclear, ask the rights holder or choose an image with clear permission. A search rights filter helps discovery; it does not grant a license.
- Keep a provenance record. As a practical safeguard, save the original page URL, identified creator or rights holder, license text and the date you checked it, plus any required attribution. This is a useful record-keeping practice, not a Google-mandated checklist.
Use Google’s image-search API only if you are an existing customer
Google’s Custom Search JSON API overview says the API is unavailable to new customers. Existing customers are directed to transition by January 1, 2027. As of the overview accessed in 2026, existing customers have 100 queries per day at no charge; additional requests are listed at $5 per 1,000 queries, up to 10,000 per day, during the remaining availability period. These figures do not apply to new users and may change; check Google’s current overview before relying on them.
Requirements and image parameters
An eligible existing customer needs an API key and a configured Programmable Search Engine ID (cx). In the documented request, set searchType=image to request image results. Google’s API reference documents filters for image type, size, color, dominant color, and rights. The rights filter is a discovery aid, not authorization to use an image. The API returns no more than 100 results for a query.
