Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGPS tracking can work without cell service, but offline positioning is not the same as offline maps or navigation. A receiver can determine its position from satellite signals; map display and route guidance require map and routing data stored on the device. To measure the straight-line distance between two recorded coordinates, use the Haversine formula, which estimates distance along a spherical Earth—not the distance along a road or trail.
Does GPS work without cell service?
Yes, if the device has a GPS or other suitable satellite-navigation receiver and can receive satellite signals. Satellite positioning and cellular internet are separate capabilities: a cellular connection is not inherently required to calculate a position from satellite signals. Whether a device gets a usable fix depends on its receiver and signal conditions.

Three functions are easy to confuse:
- Positioning: estimating the device’s coordinates from satellite signals.
- Map display: showing those coordinates against map data. For offline use, the required map data must already be downloaded or stored on the device.
- Routing: calculating or updating a path. Route guidance also depends on having the necessary map and routing data available offline; a position fix alone does not provide a route.
For example, Garmin describes offline map downloads in its Explore ecosystem for compatible devices. That is a vendor-specific feature, not a requirement for the Haversine calculation itself.

- Download the map area you will need while connected, and confirm that your device or app supports offline access to it.
- Check that location access is enabled and that the device can receive satellite signals where you plan to use it. Buildings, terrain, and other obstructions can affect reception.
- If you need navigation rather than just a coordinate, verify that the offline data supports the routing function you intend to use.
How do I calculate the distance between two GPS coordinates?
Haversine calculates an approximate great-circle distance—the shortest path over a spherical Earth—between two latitude/longitude points. It does not calculate driving distance, a mapped route, or distance adjusted for terrain.

Let the starting point be latitude φ1 and longitude λ1, and the destination be latitude φ2 and longitude λ2. Convert all four coordinates from degrees to radians, then calculate:
a = sin²((φ₂ − φ₁) / 2) + cos(φ₁) × cos(φ₂) × sin²((λ₂ − λ₁) / 2)

c = 2 × asin(√a)
d = R × c
- R is the radius of the sphere chosen by the implementation.
- c is the central angle in radians.
- d is the distance, in the same unit used for R. If R is expressed in kilometers, d is in kilometers; if R is in meters, d is in meters.
Because the result depends on the chosen radius and a spherical model, implementations should state their radius and output units when reporting a value. Haversine is useful for a simple straight-line estimate, but it is not an ellipsoidal geodesic calculation.
Validate coordinates before calculating
Check that the values are in the expected order: latitude first, longitude second. Android’s documented distance method accepts latitude from −90 to 90 degrees and longitude from −180 to 180 degrees. Convert degrees to radians before applying the trigonometric formula; using degree values directly will produce an incorrect result.

When should I use Haversine, and when should I use a platform distance API?
Use Haversine when you need a transparent spherical estimate between two coordinates and can choose and document a radius. If you need the platform’s geodesic behavior, use its documented distance API instead. Android’s Location.distanceBetween() documents an approximate distance based on the WGS84 ellipsoid, so its model differs from a spherical Haversine calculation.
Neither method turns two points into a road or trail distance. For that, a routing system needs a route network or other path data. The distance between endpoints alone cannot establish how far someone traveled along a winding road, trail, or terrain-following path.

How accurate is an offline GPS distance?
A calculated distance cannot be more certain than the coordinates used to produce it. GPS.gov identifies satellite geometry, signal blockage, atmospheric conditions, and receiver design as factors affecting accuracy. It gives 4.9 m (16 ft.) as an example smartphone accuracy radius under open sky, attributed on that page to an external source. This is a conditional example, not a guarantee for every phone or environment.
On Android, horizontal accuracy is reported as a radius with a 68th-percentile interpretation: it describes an uncertainty estimate around a location, not a promise that every fix lies within that circle. Displaying more decimal places in a coordinate or distance does not remove uncertainty in the underlying fix.

- Waterproof to IPX7 standards for protection against splashes, rain, etc.
- Support for paperless geocaching and Garmin spine mounting accessories. Power with two AA batteries for up to 20 hours of use (best with Polaroid AA batteries)
- See high and low elevation points or store waypoints along a track (start, finish and high/low altitude) to estimate time and distance between points
When accumulating distance from a series of fixes, raw point-to-point sums can overstate travel if noisy coordinates jump around. Consider the reported accuracy and the intended use before treating every short segment as real movement; smoothing or filtering choices should be appropriate to the application rather than assumed to be universally correct.
How do location freshness and battery use affect tracking?
A last-known location is quick to retrieve and minimizes app-attributed power use, but it may be stale. When freshness matters, Android recommends requesting a current location instead. Active location requests can require ongoing computation and use power, so the update frequency should match the task: a frequent track may need more updates than a check-in or occasional location display.
Manage the lifetime of active update requests so they do not continue after the tracking task ends. If an app reports a location but the device has not moved, check when the fix was obtained before interpreting it as current.
What setup should I choose for offline tracking?
| Need | What to check | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Record a position without cellular service | A device with satellite-positioning capability and adequate satellite signal reception. | Cellular-free positioning does not ensure a map or route is available. |
| See your position on a map offline | Map data downloaded or stored locally, with support for offline use on the device or app. | Offline map display does not by itself ensure offline route calculation. |
| Measure between two coordinates | Haversine for a spherical estimate, or a documented geodesic API for its specified Earth model. | Neither endpoint calculation gives road, trail, or terrain distance. |
| Track a moving device | Choose an update frequency that balances freshness, task needs, and battery use; consider fix age and accuracy. | A dense sequence of fixes is not automatically a more accurate traveled distance. |
A handheld GPS receiver with offline maps can be useful for field navigation, but the distance formula only requires coordinates; no particular hardware is needed to calculate it.
