Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to divide them into four groups of four. The central challenge is deliberate ambiguity: several words may appear to belong together, but the NYT Help Center says each puzzle has exactly one intended solution. The same help page does not define the in-game “one away” message or state a fixed number of mistakes allowed, so those details should not be treated as officially documented rules.
NYT does document the board structure, category colors, personal statistics, community hints, and the separate Connections Bot analysis tool. Knowing which feature does what helps you get assistance without confusing a spoiler-filled forum with post-game performance analysis.

What the Connections board is asking you to do
The official rules are compact: players receive 16 words and must find four sets of four items that share something in common. A complete solve therefore requires four categories, each containing exactly four board entries.
The intended connection can be a meaning, use, phrase, name, pattern, or another relationship selected by the puzzle editors. The NYT Help Center says that words and categories are curated using the Oxford Dictionary. That editorial process matters because the intended relationship depends on the accepted meaning of a word, not merely on an association a player can invent.

There is one complete solution. NYT explicitly says the puzzle is designed to be tricky because words can fit multiple categories. In practice, a tempting group may be a decoy: all four entries can look related, yet one of them may be needed in another category and a different word completes the intended set.
Why several guesses can seem correct
Decoys are part of the design
A board is not broken simply because you can describe two plausible groups. The ambiguity is intentional. The decisive test is whether all four words share the same specific relationship and whether the remaining 12 words can still be partitioned into three valid groups of four.
Broad connections are weaker than precise ones
“Things that are blue,” “words associated with travel,” or “items found in a kitchen” may describe many entries without identifying the editor’s category. Prefer a connection that is narrow enough to explain exactly four words and leaves a clean explanation for the rest.
One word can be the decoy
When five words appear to fit, do not submit the first four automatically. Compare the candidates and ask which word has the most exact relationship to the other three. The leftover word may be the one that belongs to a different, less obvious category.
What the category colors mean
Each group receives one of four colors. NYT explicitly identifies yellow as the easiest category and purple as the trickiest. The official explanation lists green and blue between them but does not provide a more precise ordering or a numerical difficulty scale.

| Color | What the official help page establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | The easiest category. | No guaranteed subject matter or required solving order. |
| Green | A category color used by the game. | The page does not rank it precisely against blue. |
| Blue | A category color used by the game. | The page does not rank it precisely against green. |
| Purple | The trickiest category. | No promise that it will always use a particular wordplay type. |
Color is therefore a difficulty label, not a clue that tells you the category in advance. A purple group may rely on an unusual interpretation, while a yellow group is generally more direct, but the help page does not prescribe a fixed theme for any color.
What does “one away” mean in Connections?
The retrieved NYT Help Center page does not explain the “one away” signal. It does not say whether the message means one word is misplaced, one relationship is incomplete, or something else about the submitted set. Because the official page omits that mechanic, there is no verified NYT definition to quote here.
Do not use the statistics page’s mistake histogram as a substitute definition. The histogram records puzzles solved with zero through four mistakes, but it does not describe the turn-by-turn message shown after a particular guess. If you need certainty about a specific interface message, rely on the wording displayed in your current game and avoid treating an informal player explanation as an official rule.
How many mistakes can you make in Connections?
NYT does not state a fixed mistake allowance on the help page. It does state that a win means completing the puzzle in fewer than four mistakes. In ordinary mathematical terms, that definition covers results with zero, one, two, or three mistakes.
The same page describes a mistake histogram with bars for puzzles solved with zero to four mistakes. That tells you which mistake counts are represented in personal statistics; it does not explain exactly what the game does after a fourth wrong submission or establish a universal turn limit. The page also does not provide a full account of every wrong-guess interaction.

For that reason, avoid claims such as “you always get four lives” unless you have a separate, verified official rules source for the version and interface you are using. The documented points are the under-four-mistakes win definition and the zero-to-four range shown in statistics.

Do hints count as mistakes in Connections?
The official help page does not say whether requesting or reading a hint changes your mistake count. It also does not describe an in-game progressive hint button whose use is tied to a guess. No conclusion about hint penalties can safely be drawn from the published statistics explanation.
What you can control is the type of assistance you use. A community hint may reveal part of the answer without recording a board submission, while a submitted group is the action the game evaluates as a guess. However, the page does not explicitly connect those actions to the mistake counter, so treat any stronger claim as unverified.
Does Connections have hints?
NYT provides help-related features, but they are not all the same thing. The two named options are Connections Companion and Connections Bot.
Connections Companion: community help with spoiler risk
Connections Companion is a community forum for puzzle support. Anyone can read its hints, comments, and difficulty score. NYT warns that comments may contain spoilers, so opening a discussion can reveal the solution rather than provide a small, controlled nudge.

The help page presents Companion as community discussion, not as a staged ladder of clues delivered inside your active guess. If you want to preserve the challenge, read only the hint material you can tolerate and avoid comment sections when the page warns that spoilers may appear.
Connections Bot: subscriber-only analysis after play
Connections Bot is a separate daily, personalized statistics tool. It is available to All Access, Home Delivery, and Games subscribers. Its documented functions include:
- showing how difficult the puzzle was for other players;
- providing your skill score and an assessment of solution uniqueness;
- reporting category difficulty and the order in which categories were solved;
- describing common mistakes with AI-generated explanations; and
- giving a guess-by-guess breakdown of your play.
That makes Bot a post-play analysis feature, not a documented pre-guess hint ladder. The help page does not say that Bot supplies clues before you submit a group.

| Primary function | Community hints, comments, and difficulty discussion. | Personalized statistics and performance analysis. |

| Spoiler exposure | Comments can contain spoilers. | Focused on your recorded play rather than an open comment thread. |

How to use the rules when you are stuck
- List exact relationships. For each possible group, write the narrowest phrase that explains all four words. Reject a group that needs four different explanations.
- Test the leftovers. Temporarily remove a proposed set and inspect the remaining 12 words. If the remainder cannot form three coherent groups of four, your first set probably contains a decoy.
- Separate literal and wordplay readings. A word may be a noun, verb, proper name, abbreviation, or part of a familiar phrase. Check each grammatical or cultural sense before committing.
- Protect the strongest evidence. Keep the most specific category in reserve while you investigate broad categories. Broad associations are where decoys are most effective.
- Use colors only after solving. Yellow and purple describe relative difficulty; they do not reveal a category’s content and the help page does not define a precise green-versus-blue order.
- Choose assistance deliberately. Use Companion when community clues are acceptable and spoilers are manageable. Use Bot when you want an explanation of your completed play and have an eligible subscription.
Daily play, accounts, and the archive
Free daily puzzle
The daily game is free to play without registration or sign-in. NYT recommends an account if you want progress to carry between devices or platforms. A new daily puzzle is released at midnight in the player’s local timezone.
Statistics and streaks
The official statistics view can include puzzles completed, win rate, current and maximum streaks, perfect puzzles, and the mistake histogram covering zero through four mistakes. Completing a puzzle after midnight local time breaks the current streak, and the help page says a broken streak cannot be reset.
Best Value
Paid archive
All Access and Games subscribers can use the official archive, which reaches back to June 12, 2023. Archive play contributes to completed-puzzle totals, win rate, perfect-puzzle totals, and mistake distribution, but not to current or maximum streaks. An account is needed to retain archive progress and play history, and a completed puzzle cannot be replayed.
Common points of confusion
“The page says four mistakes, so the fourth must end the game.”
Not necessarily. The documented histogram includes zero to four mistakes, and a win is defined as completion in fewer than four. The help page does not describe the exact sequence after each wrong submission, so do not infer an end-of-game rule from the graph alone.
“A plausible category must be the intended category.”
Not in Connections. Multiple interpretations are expected, but only one complete four-by-four partition is intended. Verify the remaining board before submitting.
Recommended Free Tools
“Companion and Bot are two names for the same hint system.”
They serve different purposes. Companion is an open community forum where spoilers may appear; Bot is subscriber-only, personalized analysis of your results.
“The colors tell me exactly what kind of category I am looking for.”
The official explanation only establishes the difficulty endpoints: yellow easiest and purple trickiest. It does not assign fixed themes or a precise green-blue ranking.
