New York City does not hand every resident a free household battery. The program behind the recent headlines is Every Electric’s A/C-Powerbank, a Con Edison-linked demand-response service. If your address qualifies, Every Electric supplies a managed powerbank at no cost, and you plug your 120-volt air conditioner into it. The system shifts some air-conditioning demand away from grid peak periods and advertises up to $150 per air conditioner for a season.
Eligibility is screened by address. The current requirements listed by Every Electric are an active Con Edison account in the household, a plug-in air conditioner and home Wi-Fi. Plan terms can differ: the company’s current pages show an Essential path that may require a refundable deposit, so check the exact offer before enrolling.
What the NYC A/C-Powerbank program actually is
Every Electric’s device is a smart, program-supplied powerbank for air conditioners. Its purpose is demand response: it can run the connected AC from stored energy during high-demand periods so the unit draws less from the grid at those times. It is not a solar panel system, a net-metering arrangement or a general-purpose home battery that exports electricity to the utility.
Associated Press reporting published May 7, 2026, described the New York City pilot as plug-in batteries for window air conditioners. Every Electric CEO Andrew Wang compared the product to “a souped up version of the power bank that you would use to charge your phone when you go out.”

Every Electric says the service supports many 120-volt window, portable, through-wall and PTAC air conditioners. The company’s instructions are intentionally simple: connect the AC to the powerbank, connect the powerbank to a wall outlet, connect it to Wi-Fi and allow the software to manage operation.
Who can qualify
Every Electric’s FAQ lists three current conditions. Meeting them does not guarantee enrollment because the company also screens addresses and may limit participation by seasonally available capacity.

How to sign up and connect the battery
- Run the address check. Use Every Electric’s A/C-Powerbank enrollment flow and enter the service address. The program is not automatically available throughout New York City.
- Confirm the utility account. Have the active Con Edison account information available for the household.
- Review the plan screen. Check whether the offer is the no-deposit participation path or an Essential path showing a refundable deposit. Also read the current reward and payment terms.
- Confirm the AC. Match your unit to the stated plug-in, 120-volt equipment categories and follow the program’s safety instructions.
- Install the powerbank. Plug the AC into the powerbank, plug the powerbank into a wall outlet and connect it to Wi-Fi. The device then manages scheduled load shifting automatically.
- Save the terms. Keep the enrollment confirmation, deposit conditions, reward schedule and support details. Seasonal capacity and waitlist status can change.
How the rewards work
Every Electric’s 2026 how-it-works page advertises up to $150 per AC per season. “Up to” matters: the actual amount, qualification rules and payment method are program terms rather than a guaranteed universal payment.
AP reported one participant receiving a $100 gift card and described rewards as roughly equivalent to a July electric bill. That is a reported participant example, not a promise that every enrollee receives $100 or that the reward always arrives as a gift card. Check the offer attached to your address before accepting it.
The size of the pilot is also changing. AP reported a target of more than 1,000 participating homes for summer 2026, with Every Electric describing growth from about 200 kilowatts of flexible capacity in the prior year to roughly 2 megawatts in summer 2026. Those figures describe the program’s aggregate capacity, not the battery capacity installed in an individual home.

What happens during peak demand and an outage
When the program calls for load reduction, the powerbank can supply the connected AC from stored energy instead of having the AC draw all of its power from the grid. The software is intended to make that shift without requiring you to respond to each event.
The available information does not establish that the unit will keep an AC running for a specified number of hours during a utility outage, nor does it promise whole-home backup. Ask Every Electric about outage behavior, battery duration, recharge requirements and whether your specific AC remains supported when the grid is down. Do not treat the program device as a substitute for an emergency generator or a separately purchased backup system.
Will it work with your air conditioner?
The published equipment description covers many 120-volt window, portable, through-wall and PTAC units. Before enrollment, check the AC’s voltage and plug, and confirm the exact model with Every Electric if it is a high-draw, unusually configured or permanently wired unit. A through-wall opening does not by itself prove compatibility; the unit still needs to fit the program’s plug-in requirements.

A generic portable power station is not an equivalent replacement. Every Electric’s battery is a managed device tied to the demand-response service, its communications connection and its reward rules.

The A/C-Powerbank is separate from public programs that provide cooling equipment. Receiving an AC through a benefits program does not automatically enroll the household in Every Electric.

What to compare before accepting an offer
- Utility and address: Confirm that the Con Edison account and service address are eligible now, not just in a general service area.
- AC connection: Verify the 120-volt plug and the specific window, portable, through-wall or PTAC model.
- Wi-Fi: Make sure the installation location has reliable home Wi-Fi; the smart controls depend on it.
- Deposit: Read whether your selected plan requires a refundable deposit, when it is returned and what conditions apply.
- Reward: Record the seasonal amount, performance requirements, payment method and payment date. The advertised maximum is not a guaranteed payout.
- Outage behavior: Ask how the unit behaves when Con Edison power fails and whether the AC can continue running.
- Timing: Check for a waitlist, seasonal enrollment cutoff or capacity pause before disconnecting or replacing equipment.
Is the program a good fit?
It is most useful for a Con Edison household that already owns a compatible plug-in AC, has Wi-Fi and wants an automatic way to reduce peak-grid demand without buying a battery. The strongest practical benefit is the combination of supplied hardware and a possible seasonal payment.
It is a weaker fit if you need guaranteed emergency backup, have a hard-wired or non-120-volt air conditioner, lack Wi-Fi or cannot accept a plan with a deposit. In those cases, verify the technical and financial terms first rather than assuming the “free battery” headline applies.
Bottom line
Every Electric’s A/C-Powerbank is a real, Con Edison-linked demand-response program, but it is not a universal NYC battery giveaway. Eligible households with a plug-in AC and Wi-Fi can receive a program-supplied powerbank, connect the AC and potentially earn up to $150 per unit for a season. Because address screening, deposits, rewards, capacity and outage performance can change, read the offer for your exact address before enrolling.
