Windows includes Compact OS, a built-in mode that stores operating-system files in compressed form and runs Windows from those files. You can check or change it with compact.exe in an elevated Command Prompt. But 38 GB is an individual, unverified result—not a realistic amount to expect from Compact OS alone: published estimates are closer to about 1.5–2.6 GB or around 2 GB, depending on the source and Windows version.
What Compact OS does in Windows 11
Compact OS compresses Windows operating-system files so they take up less storage while remaining usable by Windows. Microsoft documents that it can be enabled or disabled after installation. The feature is controlled by compact.exe, Microsoft’s command-line utility for NTFS compression.

It is different from selecting the Windows folder and applying ordinary NTFS compression to everything inside it. Compact OS is a specific system-file mode; the same utility also has options for compressing ordinary files and directories, and for compressing read-mostly executable files.
How to check, enable, or undo Compact OS
Use an elevated Command Prompt: open Start, search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the prompt. Run one command at a time:

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Check the current state:
compact.exe /compactOS:query. The command reports whether Compact OS is enabled. - Enable it:
compact.exe /compactOS:always. Windows compresses operating-system binaries and sets Compact OS. - Undo it:
compact.exe /compactOS:never. Windows uncompresses those binaries and restores the non-Compact state.
Before changing system files, make a temporary full backup. Afterward, check the state again with compact.exe /compactOS:query and use the computer normally before deciding whether to keep the change. If you notice a performance problem, run compact.exe /compactOS:never to reverse it.
Does Compact OS really give back 38 GB?
There is no basis for treating 38 GB as a typical Compact OS saving. Microsoft Windows Storage and Deployment Teams reported approximate savings of 1.5 GB for 32-bit system compression and 2.6 GB for 64-bit system compression in a 2015 Windows 10 launch explanation. A Windows Central Windows 11 guide from 2026 puts the reclaimed space at around 2 GB. These figures are estimates from their respective sources and contexts, not promises for every PC.

A reported 38 GB could reflect more than Compact OS—for example, compression of additional program files, a different starting state, or space counted from related cleanup. That is only a possible explanation; the 38 GB result has not been verified as a Compact OS benchmark. To determine what happened on a particular PC, compare its available space before and after the operation and do not attribute unrelated cleanup to Compact OS.

Windows reads fewer stored bytes but must decompress data; the effect depends on the balance between storage and CPU speed. | Microsoft’s 2015 estimates: approximately 1.5 GB for 32-bit and 2.6 GB for 64-bit system compression. Windows Central’s 2026 guide: around 2 GB. |
| Ordinary NTFS compression | Files or directories, including writable data | /u uncompresses files; /c compresses them. |
Microsoft says writable files should use traditional NTFS compression rather than executable-oriented compression. Compression adds work when data is accessed or changed. | Not stated for the reader’s machine; measure the space change on the files being compressed. |
/EXE compression |
Frequently read, rarely modified executable files | The Compact utility can also uncompress files. | Microsoft’s listed choices are XPRESS4K (fastest and default), XPRESS8K, XPRESS16K, and LZX (most compact). Microsoft says this executable-oriented path has less performance overhead than traditional NTFS compression in its Compact OS guidance; it is not the recommended choice for writable files. | Not stated for the reader’s machine; measure the space change on the files being compressed. |
When ordinary NTFS compression is the right tool
For a particular file or directory, run compact /c "C:pathtofile-or-folder" to compress it, or compact /u "C:pathtofile-or-folder" to uncompress it. Add /s to recurse through a directory tree, and /i to continue past errors.
Be precise about the target. Setting a directory’s compression state does not necessarily compress files that were already inside it; the operation must target those files as well. The command-line help for compact describes options for targeting and traversing files. Avoid treating a blanket compression of the Windows folder as interchangeable with Compact OS.

Is Compact OS safe on an SSD?
The relevant trade-off is not simply whether the drive is an SSD. Compression reduces the amount of stored data Windows needs to read, but decompression uses CPU time. Microsoft’s guidance says the outcome depends on the relative speed of the storage device and processor: fewer reads may help an I/O-bound system, while CPU work can add overhead. That means no universal performance result follows just from having an SSD.
Make a full temporary backup before changing system files. Then compare real tasks on your own PC—boot and shutdown, app launches, disk throughput, and CPU use—rather than assuming that more free space means better performance. If the effect is not worthwhile, use compact.exe /compactOS:never to reverse Compact OS.
