How Nintendo Switch Sports Handles Local Multiplayer and Shared Controllers

Nintendo Switch Sports supports shared Joy-Con play in some sports, but controller needs and player limits vary. Here’s how one-console play differs from LAN.

Yes. In supported sports, two people can share a single Joy-Con by passing it between turns, but controller requirements and the number of simultaneous players vary by sport. One-console local play is different from multi-console LAN play: Nintendo’s LAN setup connects up to four Switch consoles over a wired local network, with up to eight participants overall, subject to sport-specific limits.

Can two people share one Joy-Con?

Yes, for supported play. Nintendo describes passing a Joy-Con to a friend for 1v1, 2v2, or free-for-all play on its Nintendo Switch Sports product page. That describes the game’s shared-play option; it does not mean every sport offers all those formats or uses the same controller arrangement.

Controller compatibility depends on the sport selected. Nintendo lists paired Joy-Con 2 controllers, paired Joy-Con controllers, a single Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con, and a Joy-Con with Leg Strap for applicable play. Check the selected sport’s setup instructions to see what it supports and how many people can participate at once. Nintendo’s controller and play-mode FAQ lists the compatible configurations.

How many people can play locally?

There are two different local arrangements: multiple players sharing one console, and players connecting several consoles over a wired local network. In either case, the simultaneous player limit depends on the sport. Nintendo does not give one universal maximum for every sport in its guidance.

Several players on one Switch

For same-console local play, players use one system and the supported locally connected controllers. Some play can use a single Joy-Con per player or pass a Joy-Con between people, while other controller needs vary by sport. Follow the player and controller prompts in the chosen sport rather than assuming one controller setup works for every activity.

Several Switch consoles over LAN

Nintendo’s LAN play instructions allow up to four consoles, with up to two players per console and eight people overall. The sport still determines how many participants can play simultaneously. Each console needs a copy of Nintendo Switch Sports, physical or digital.

  • Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online

LAN means the consoles are connected through the same wired local network, such as a router. It is not the same as wireless local play or playing online over the internet. Nintendo’s instructions call for wired networking; depending on the console and dock, you may need a LAN adapter. Each console’s players select Single Player or Two Players, then create or join a room and begin once everyone is assembled.

What equipment and modes should you check?

  • Play on a TV: Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode. Nintendo recommends TV Mode with Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, or Nintendo Switch – OLED Model.
  • Use compatible controllers: Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2 configurations vary by sport. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers and Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers are not compatible.
  • Membership applies to online play: Nintendo requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play. Its FAQ says Play with Friends voice chat uses the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app; Nintendo Accounts for users under 13 cannot use that voice chat. Nintendo also says Switch 2 supports GameChat with friends while playing. These are online features, not requirements stated for local play.

Soccer and the Leg Strap

The Leg Strap is an optional Soccer control choice, not a general requirement for local multiplayer. In Play Locally and Play with Friends, Nintendo says to press + from the controller instruction screen to change the option; in Play Globally, select the control option from the sport-selection screen. Nintendo notes that Joy-Con 2 controllers do not work with the Leg Strap. See its controller FAQ for the accessory details.
