Meanwhile, the reward catalog refreshes weekly, so an unredeemed element may stop being offered. These are separate clocks, and a mission can also have its own deadline to claim points.
What expires—and what does not
| What you have | What happens | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Unspent Platinum Points | They expire six months after collection. Nintendo processes expirations at 11:59:59 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time on the last day of the month; when Pacific Standard Time is in effect, processing is one hour later. Nintendo’s My Nintendo points guidance explains the timing. | Check your signed-in account’s Points history for your balance and expired points. Nintendo’s example: points collected April 15, 2025 expire October 31, 2025. Nintendo’s Points Overview describes the example. |
| Elements already redeemed into Icon Collection | They remain accessible even if your Nintendo Switch Online membership ends. Nintendo Support says: “Once an icon element has been added to your Icon Collection, you will not lose access to it—even if you no longer have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.” Read Nintendo Support’s guide. | Open Icon Collection on your console to view redeemed elements. |
| Elements not yet redeemed | The catalog changes: Nintendo says themes change monthly and elements refresh weekly. An element can leave the current offer before you redeem it. Nintendo’s Missions & Rewards announcement explains the rotation. | Check Missions & Rewards on the console for what is currently available. |
| Points for a mission with a claim deadline | Some missions require you to collect the points within a stated timeframe. If that deadline passes, the activity may count as completed but the points will not be granted. Nintendo Support explains mission deadlines. | Return to Missions or My Nintendo and collect the points before the deadline shown for that mission. |
The six-month deadline applies to points, not to icon elements already in your collection. Redeeming points turns them into a reward element; it does not make that element another expiring point balance.

How to redeem and use icon rewards
Nintendo Switch Online icon rewards are assembled from game-specific characters, backgrounds, and frames. On a compatible Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch console, the basic flow is:
Recommended Free Tools
- From the HOME Menu, open Nintendo Switch Online and choose your user.
- Open Missions & Rewards and browse the available games and icon elements.
- Check the requirements shown for an element, then redeem it using Platinum Points.
- Open Icon Collection to view the elements you have redeemed and create or choose an icon.
Nintendo’s April 7, 2026 icon-maker explainer describes the same sequence: redeem characters, backgrounds, or frames in Missions & Rewards, then put the elements together. Nintendo’s Americas support instructions say elements from different games cannot be combined. Labels and interfaces can vary by region; for local instructions, see Nintendo UK support or Nintendo Australia support.

Membership and item requirements
To redeem icon elements, Nintendo requires an active, paid Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch console with internet access. Requirements can be stricter for individual items:
- Some elements require a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- Some require playing the related game while the elements are available.
- Some require playing on at least three separate days within the previous 30 days. This is an eligibility condition for certain elements, not a general point-expiration rule.
Check the requirement displayed on each item in Missions & Rewards. Nintendo’s Americas support guide and Expansion Pack FAQ cover these conditions. The FAQ also says Expansion Pack-exclusive elements already added to Icon Collection remain accessible if that higher membership ends.

How to avoid losing points or missing an element
- Spend points before they expire. Use your Points history to identify the balance and any points nearing expiration; Nintendo applies the six-month validity period by collection date and month-end processing.
- Claim mission points, not just complete the activity. If a mission gives a collection deadline, return to the mission and collect the points before it passes.
- Redeem an element while it is offered. Weekly refreshes affect the catalog, not elements already in your collection.
- Read the item’s eligibility details first. Membership tier, recent play, and game-specific conditions can affect whether an element is redeemable.
Point-earning methods and reward availability vary by country or region, and the offer shown on your console is the practical guide to what is currently available for your account. For the latest regional conditions, use the Nintendo support page for your country.
