Basic GameChat does not require a particular game: you can chat while playing different games or no game at all. Game-specific compatibility matters for extra features such as in-game camera effects and GameShare, which lets others play supported software during a session.
How GameChat works
Open the C Menu by pressing the C Button on a Joy-Con 2 or another supported Switch 2 controller, or open it from HOME. After completing setup, create a room and invite approved friends, or join an invitation. Nintendo’s setup flow allows you to invite up to 11 friends, for a maximum of 12 people in a room. Up to four participants can share a game screen or camera video at the same time. Nintendo’s GameChat FAQ explains setup and room invitations.

Participants do not have to be playing the same game—or any game—to talk. The Switch 2’s built-in microphone handles voice chat, and Nintendo says it adjusts to the surroundings and filters background and game audio. You do not need a separate microphone accessory for voice chat.
Video is optional. To show camera video, connect a compatible USB camera. Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is one example; some third-party cameras may work, but compatibility is not guaranteed. You can check a connected device using Test USB Camera in console settings.

What you need to use GameChat
- A Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Account.
- A persistent internet connection, a successful initial server connection test, and a current system update.
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s temporary GameChat open-access period ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026; that period has ended.
- A phone number registered to your Nintendo Account and verified during setup.
- Friends on your Friend List who have approved you in return. An invitation alone is not enough if the other person has not approved you.
- A compatible USB camera only if you want video chat.
For initial setup, open the C Menu, select your user, test the server connection, accept the GameChat terms, verify the registered phone number, and approve friends. Invitees must approve you as well. Nintendo’s setup instructions cover this flow; its FAQ describes the membership and device requirements.
Does GameChat require a compatible game?
No—not for ordinary voice chat or screen sharing. GameChat is a Switch 2 system feature, and Nintendo says it is available regardless of which game is being played. The phrase “GameChat-compatible game” can refer to specific extras, not a prerequisite for joining a chat.
In-game camera features
Some games support additional camera-based features, such as CameraPlay, character avatars, or augmented-reality filters. These are game-specific options and are separate from using GameChat’s general camera video.

GameShare
GameShare is a separate feature that allows other players to play supported software during a session without owning their own copy for that session. Support and connection modes vary by title, so check the game’s software information or its setup instructions rather than assuming that GameChat availability means GameShare is supported.
Nintendo’s August 5, 2025 examples of GameShare titles include Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV, Fast Fusion, and Split Fiction. Its October 20, 2025 examples include Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, NBA 2K26, and Chillin’ by the Fire. These are examples, not a complete compatibility list. Nintendo also notes that a game may support one GameShare connection method but not another. Nintendo’s GameShare FAQ explains the distinctions.
A Switch 2 is required to host GameShare. Online GameShare through GameChat is limited to Switch 2 systems; local wireless can include an original Nintendo Switch if the software supports that mode. Up to four systems can participate. The shared software is available to guests only during that session, not as a permanent copy. Because GameShare streams the game, network conditions and physical distance can affect delay, and Nintendo notes that streamed image quality is reduced. Nintendo’s GameShare FAQ provides further details.

For children under 16 and supervised accounts, a parent or guardian must set up GameChat parental controls in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app before the feature can be used. Parents can approve or revoke individual friends. A child cannot chat with an unapproved friend, and the other participant—or that participant’s guardian—must approve the child too.

Camera permission is granted for each new GameChat room. A parent can turn off video chat, decide whether a child may request permission, and limit the camera view options: face-only, person-only, or full video. If video is disabled, the child will not see other participants’ camera feeds; Nintendo says this does not prevent screen sharing.
The app can show whether a child used GameChat, when the session started, how long it lasted, whether a camera or GameShare was used, and which friends they interacted with. Nintendo says parents cannot access the conversations themselves. Players can block or report people who violate Nintendo’s Community Guidelines. Nintendo’s parental-controls information and GameChat FAQ describe these safeguards.
Accessibility and system compatibility
Nintendo documents speech-to-text transcription, which displays a transcript on screen, and text-to-speech messages typed by the player. A standard USB keyboard can be used to enter text. Network conditions and physical distance can cause chat or sharing delays.
An original Nintendo Switch may receive certain GameShare sessions hosted locally by a Switch 2, provided the software supports that mode. It cannot join Switch 2 GameChat voice or video sessions. Nintendo’s GameChat FAQ and GameShare FAQ distinguish these capabilities.
