You can cancel before payment is processed and the game is preloaded; after payment, Nintendo’s US policy treats digital purchases as final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law requires one. A release delay is not documented as an automatic refund trigger. Check the listing and terms for the region of the Nintendo Account that placed the order.
When Nintendo charges for an eShop preorder
Nintendo’s North American support says it processes the full preorder payment no sooner than seven days before the game’s listed release date. Once payment is processed, the game is preloaded to the console, but it cannot be played until its release date; a small unlocking update may also be required. See Nintendo’s Nintendo eShop Pre-Order and Pre-Load FAQ.

Can you cancel a Nintendo eShop preorder?
In North America, Nintendo says you can cancel before payment is processed and the game is preloaded. Its cancellation instructions describe eligible orders as those at least seven days from release. The practical cutoff is therefore before the charge, not simply before launch day. The exact timing can depend on the listed release date and when Nintendo processes payment.

- Review that account’s preorder list and select the order you want to cancel.
- Cancel while the order is still eligible—before payment has been processed and the game preloaded.
Nintendo’s preorder FAQ gives the cutoff; its cancellation instructions explain the account process. If Nintendo has already canceled an order, the company says it may be placed again before launch or purchased after launch. Check the payment method and account status before reordering, since payment failures and account-related issues can cause cancellation.

What if the game is delayed after you have paid?
Nintendo’s reviewed North American support pages do not say that a delayed release automatically cancels a paid preorder or produces a refund. First check the game’s eShop listing and Nintendo’s official regional news or support information for a revised date. If the order still looks inconsistent, contact Nintendo Support for the region of the account that placed it.
Nintendo Japan provides a specific procedure for a preorder that is not playable on its planned release date: the date may have changed, so check the eShop or Nintendo’s official site for the latest date; then, on the console, choose “Software Update” → “Via the Internet” to refresh preorder information. This is Japan support guidance, not a procedure confirmed for every North American case. See Nintendo Japan’s preorder support page.

Can you get a refund after Nintendo has charged you?
Nintendo US’s stated baseline is that payments through Nintendo Account services, including pre-purchases, are final and non-refundable, except when Nintendo authorizes otherwise or applicable law requires otherwise. Nintendo’s Digital products refund policy states: “Except as authorized by Nintendo or as required by applicable law, all payments that you make through the Nintendo Account services (including pre-purchases and subscription payments) are final and non-refundable.”
If you want money back after payment, contact Nintendo Support about the individual order. The policy’s exceptions do not guarantee that a particular refund request will be approved; local consumer rules may also matter. Do not assume that a change in release date, by itself, qualifies the order for a refund.

Why your Nintendo Account’s region matters
Preorder and refund terms are not interchangeable across regions. Nintendo Spain describes a 14-day withdrawal right for preorder contracts subject to conditions for digital content, as well as a separate voluntary right to cancel before the non-playable version downloads. Those Spain/EU-facing terms should not be applied to a US account. Review the current terms for the country or region set on the account that made the purchase. See Nintendo Spain’s preorder cancellation policy.

Choose the next step based on the order
| Order situation | What to do | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Not yet charged; North American account | Cancel from the preorder list in the eShop if you no longer want the game. | Nintendo says cancellation is available before payment and preloading, generally seven or more days before release. |
| Charged; release date has moved | Check the regional listing and official updates; contact regional Nintendo Support if the order remains unclear. | The reviewed North American pages do not promise an automatic refund for a delay. |
| Charged; asking for a refund from a US account | Ask Nintendo Support about the specific transaction and review the policy and applicable local rules. | Nintendo’s policy says digital payments are final unless Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law requires one. |
| Order or date appears wrong on a Japan account | Check the latest date, then use “Software Update” → “Via the Internet” as Nintendo Japan describes. | This procedure is Japan-specific guidance. |
| Account in Spain or another region | Check that region’s current withdrawal, cancellation, and digital-content terms. | Spain’s stated 14-day withdrawal right has conditions and should not be generalized to other regions. |
