Nick Pino’s basement became a place for Xbox Series X and PS5 gaming, unwinding, and spending time with family and friends—not the dedicated home cinema he first planned. In a personal account published by Tom’s Guide on September 27, 2026, Pino describes renovating the partially finished space after flooding disrupted that earlier plan. He calls it his favorite room in the house.
Why the original basement plan changed
Pino says he bought the home in 2022. After two years of above-average snowfall and basement flooding, he reconsidered his original home-cinema project. During a renovation in 2026, he says he addressed the risk of future water damage, but does not describe the work, name a contractor, or report measured results. His account therefore offers a personal renovation story, not a guide to diagnosing or waterproofing a basement.

A room for gaming and company
Rather than describe a dedicated cinema, Pino presents the finished space as a comfortable multipurpose room for playing games and spending time with friends and family. He names Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 as the consoles used in the room. The mix makes the room’s purpose broader than a single-seat gaming setup: it is also somewhere to gather and unwind.

The setup Pino identifies
Pino identifies the display as a Samsung S95H OLED, but the exact screen size is unclear. The story’s headline says “65-inch OLED,” while its linked product card names a “Samsung 77-Inch Class S95h OLED 4K TV.” The article body does not specify the installed unit’s size, so the listing should not be treated as proof of what is in the room.

The shopping links associated with the story cover several parts of a recreation room: a corner floor lamp, sofa, rug, TV stand, coffee table, Samsung Q-Series soundbar, Xbox Series X, PS5, games for both consoles, and a Star Wars: Fall of the Empire Pro pinball machine. Those links indicate the categories featured, but do not establish that Pino installed each exact product or variant.
The home-cinema idea is still a possibility
Pino says he may eventually shift the room toward a home-cinema setup with an ultra-short-throw projector and tower speakers. These are future possibilities, not equipment he says is currently installed. For now, the account centers on a shared gaming room that he finds comfortable and enjoyable, rather than a completed cinema conversion.

What this transformation does—and does not—show
The story’s useful lesson is about adapting a room’s purpose to the home’s circumstances: a flooding problem derailed one plan, and the renovated basement became a place used for gaming and company. It does not provide a renovation budget, engineering details, a product comparison, or evidence that a particular flood-prevention method will work elsewhere. Anyone planning basement work should treat Pino’s account as inspiration for a multipurpose space, not as a technical blueprint.
