Researchers at Sichuan University reported organic molecules that can distinguish heavy water—deuterium oxide (D2O)—from ordinary water through a color change. The approach uses the liquids’ subtle acidity difference to alter the sensor molecule’s chemical form. Some probes change color in visible light; others require ultraviolet illumination. The reported readout is simple to observe, but the work does not establish a consumer-ready test or a validated field instrument.
How the optical sensors distinguish heavy water
The sensor molecules are organic chromophores, compounds whose structure gives them optical properties. In the reported approach, a hydroxyl group on a molecule loses a proton in heavy water. That deprotonation produces an anionic form with a different optical response, which can appear as a color change.

The signal depends on the chemistry of the sample and the probe: researchers selected chromophores with acidity values that produce different responses in ordinary water and D2O. Some reported probes show a visible color difference under ordinary lighting, while others need UV illumination. This is a chemical readout, not simply a visual distinction between the two liquids themselves.

A 2019 Chemistry World report described work by Y. Luo and colleagues at Sichuan University, published in Angewandte Chemie International Edition (DOI: 10.1002/anie.201900806). It identified Xujun Zheng and Zhiyun Lu as team leaders. The team’s motivation was practical: contamination made the purity of different D2O batches used as NMR solvent variable.

The report says the researchers characterized multiple chromophores and their spectral properties in samples with different percentages of heavy water. It does not provide enough accessible methodological detail to reproduce the assay or independently establish a specific concentration threshold. Alice Soldà, an expert in functional imaging techniques at the Technical University of Munich who was not involved in the work, described the sensitivity as remarkable and said the probes could detect parts per million of heavy water. The report gives no exact ppm value, so that qualitative statement should not be treated as a numeric detection limit.
The report framed existing alternatives as methods that can require difficult-to-operate machinery and specialized technicians, or sensors using scarce elements such as indium, gallium, or lanthanoids. That is contextual comparison, not evidence that the optical probes outperform every established measurement method: the accessible report does not supply comparable validation data across methods and sample types.

Potential uses and development status
The immediate motivation was checking D2O purity for NMR work. The 2019 report also suggested photoacoustic imaging, where heavy water may be used as a contrast, and quality control at heavy-water plants as possible applications. These were proposed uses, not evidence of routine adoption or commercial deployment.

It describes one probe based on 5-aminofluorescein as relatively inexpensive and purchasable. That does not make the chemical a ready-to-use heavy-water test: a working assay also depends on the probe formulation, sample conditions, measurement procedure, and validation. The report does not establish a complete commercial sensor kit.

What a practical heavy-water test would still need to show
A color change may make a sensor easier to read than an instrument-dependent method, but deciding whether it is suitable for a real sample requires more than a visible signal. Relevant questions include:
- Detection limit: What concentration can be reliably distinguished, and under what conditions? The report’s parts-per-million description is qualitative, with no exact value.
- Sample compatibility: Does the response hold in the intended water or laboratory sample, including any contaminants or additives?
- Reproducibility: Does the same probe give consistent results across batches and users?
- Readout requirements: Is ordinary visible light sufficient, or does the selected probe require UV illumination or other instrumentation?
- Validation: Has the method been compared with an established measurement technique for the particular application?
Until those details are established for a specific use, the reported chemistry is best understood as a promising laboratory sensing approach rather than a general-purpose way to certify heavy-water purity.
