Neutral-atom quantum computers use individual electrically neutral atoms as qubits. Lasers cool and trap the atoms, arrange them into programmable arrays, and control their internal quantum states. To make atoms interact, a gate sequence briefly excites them into Rydberg states, where strong interactions can produce entanglement. The machine then measures the atoms and repeats the calculation to build up a statistical result.
What makes an atom a qubit?
A neutral-atom processor uses atoms that have no net electric charge. Each atom is a physical qubit: its quantum information is stored in two selected internal states, labeled 0 and 1 for convenience. The states are often long-lived hyperfine levels, whose energies differ slightly because of interactions between an atom’s electrons and nucleus. A qubit can occupy a superposition of those states, and a collection of qubits can become entangled.

The atoms themselves are not miniature electronic circuits. Their internal states provide the information, while lasers, microwaves, and optical fields prepare and manipulate those states. The atoms’ neutrality helps isolate them from some environmental disturbances, but it also means that two atoms do not naturally interact strongly enough for useful entangling gates. The hardware must create and control those interactions.

In a common design, tightly focused laser beams form optical tweezers: small traps that hold atoms at chosen locations. Researchers can move the traps, change the array’s geometry, or transport atoms to different operating zones. These features make neutral-atom machines reconfigurable, but they do not by themselves guarantee accurate or fast computation.

How a computation proceeds
A gate-based calculation moves through a physical sequence: prepare cold atoms, identify and arrange them, initialize and control their qubits, perform interactions, then measure. Because measurement produces one outcome per run, a useful answer usually requires many repetitions and classical processing to estimate outcome probabilities.
- Cool and load: laser cooling slows atoms, and trapping fields capture them. A magneto-optical trap is one common initial stage; focused optical tweezers then hold individual atoms at array sites.
- Image and arrange: imaging reveals which sites contain atoms. Since initial loading can be stochastic, some sites may be empty. The system can rearrange occupied traps to assemble the desired pattern.
- Encode and control: selected atomic states encode the qubits. Microwave, optical, or Raman pulses rotate the states; locally directed beams or frequency shifts can target particular qubits.
- Entangle or simulate: gate-based programs use controlled interactions to create entanglement. Analog programs instead set up interactions and let the atoms evolve to emulate a target physical system.
- Measure and repeat: fluorescence imaging or another readout scheme records the final state. The processor is reset or reloaded and the experiment is run again to estimate the distribution of results.
This sequence is a platform-level description, not a single universal machine design. Atom species, encoding states, trap geometry, gate pulse sequences, readout methods, and the way atoms move vary between systems.
How the atoms are cooled, trapped, and positioned
Cooling to make atoms controllable
Laser cooling reduces the atoms’ motion so they can be trapped and manipulated precisely. In a magneto-optical trap, laser light slows atoms while magnetic fields help confine them. The 2023 review in EPJ Quantum Technology gives temperatures below 1 millikelvin as typical for cold-atom systems; that is a broad platform description, not a specification for every processor. The apparatus can be at room temperature even though the atoms must be ultracold. “Room-temperature hardware” does not mean warm atoms.
Optical tweezers make a programmable array
An optical tweezer is a focused laser spot whose optical dipole force confines an atom. Multiple traps create an array, and spatial light modulators or deflectors can form or move the traps. Researchers can therefore choose patterns suited to a task rather than relying only on a permanently fabricated layout.

Loading is imperfect: some traps may be empty or may not contain the desired atom. An image identifies occupied locations, and moving traps can gather atoms into a more complete arrangement. This repair step is useful, but it costs time and adds operations to the experimental cycle. Reconfiguration can also help select which atoms are brought close enough to interact or which region carries out a particular operation.
How information is written and changed
Encoding in internal states
After loading, the processor prepares atoms in known states. A qubit is represented by two chosen levels, often long-lived hyperfine states. In the 2025 Nature architecture paper, for example, the qubits were encoded in rubidium-87 hyperfine clock states. That choice belongs to the reported system; other neutral-atom architectures can use different species or state encodings.
Single-qubit operations
A resonant microwave or optical/Raman pulse drives transitions between the two qubit states. The pulse’s duration, phase, and strength determine how the state rotates, allowing a processor to prepare superpositions or implement single-qubit gates. To address one atom without applying the same operation to its neighbors, systems can steer a focused beam or shift a selected atom’s transition frequency. The 2025 Nature system used locally focused Raman beams for single-qubit operations.

How Rydberg blockade creates entanglement
Atoms in their ground states are comparatively well isolated. For a two-qubit gate, a system can use laser pulses to excite an atom’s outer electron into a highly excited Rydberg state. Rydberg atoms interact strongly over distances that are useful for controlling neighboring qubits.
When two atoms are close enough, exciting one can shift the other atom’s transition energy. If the shift is large relative to the excitation being applied, the second atom is prevented or strongly suppressed from making the same excitation. This effect is called Rydberg blockade. A carefully timed sequence of pulses uses the conditional response—what happens to one atom depends on the state of the other—to implement an entangling operation, often described as a controlled-phase gate.
Entanglement is essential because it lets the joint state of multiple qubits encode relationships that cannot be represented as independent states. The blockade is one important route to that interaction, not a single fixed gate recipe: pulse sequences, operating parameters, and gate implementations differ among architectures. Rydberg excitation is also a trade-off. It creates the strong interaction needed for a gate, but the excited state is short-lived compared with the long-lived states used to store information.

How measurement turns a quantum state into a result
At the end of a run, the system reads out the qubits, often by imaging fluorescence. A measurement does not reveal a full quantum state or every possible answer at once. It returns a particular outcome, with probabilities set by the state and the preceding operations. Repeating the same program gives a sample of outcomes; classical processing estimates probabilities or extracts the requested result.

Readout design varies. Some approaches infer states from fluorescence, while others map spin information to atom position or to presence and absence. The 2025 Nature work described a non-destructive spin-to-position readout method. Atom loss is itself an error: a missing atom can disrupt a computation or confuse measurement. Systems therefore track losses and may rearrange or replenish atoms, though the method and timing depend on the architecture.

Quantum error correction encodes one logical qubit across multiple physical qubits so that errors can be detected and corrected without simply measuring away the information. Repeated measurements of stabilizers provide information about errors while preserving the logical state. This takes additional physical qubits, reliable operations, and repeated cycles; a large physical array is not automatically a fault-tolerant computer.
The 2025 Nature paper reported a distance-5 surface-code logical qubit with up to five rounds of stabilizer measurement, along with experiments on error correction and fault-tolerant operations. It also reported below-threshold error correction. These are meaningful experimental building blocks: they show progress on particular tasks in a specific architecture. They do not establish a generally available, large-scale fault-tolerant service or demonstrate that arbitrary useful computations can already run with corrected errors.

The figure describes that processor and its experimental setup, which included rubidium-87 clock-state storage, optical-tweezer storage, entangling, readout, and reservoir zones, atom shuttling, Rydberg entangling operations, and Raman single-qubit operations. It is not a universal ceiling for neutral-atom systems, and the atom count should not be mistaken for a count of logical qubits.

What neutral-atom systems are used for
Analog quantum simulation
In analog simulation, researchers configure atoms and their interactions to mimic a physical model, then measure how the system evolves. Optical-tweezer arrays can be used to study many-body behavior in areas such as statistical physics, materials, and spin systems. These experiments use quantum hardware as a controllable model of another quantum system; they are not automatically general-purpose gate-based calculations.
Gate-based computation
Gate-based processors apply a programmed sequence of single- and multi-qubit operations. Neutral atoms can also be used to investigate problems such as combinatorial optimization. The 2023 EPJ Quantum Technology review discusses maximum independent set formulations, which can map naturally to blockade constraints: nearby atoms cannot both occupy certain excited configurations. Such mappings and demonstrations are research directions, not evidence that current machines outperform classical methods on ordinary commercial workloads.
How to judge a neutral-atom processor
Qubit count is an easy headline number, but it is not enough to determine what a machine can compute. Performance depends on the quality and speed of operations, loss, readout, connectivity, and how many error-correction cycles or circuit layers can be completed before errors dominate. Reconfiguration can provide flexible connectivity, but moving atoms or rebuilding an array takes time and must be included in a realistic system assessment.
| Metric | What to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Physical and logical qubits | How many atoms are available, and how many encoded logical qubits are demonstrated? | Physical atoms are hardware resources; logical qubits include error-correcting overhead. |
| Gate and measurement errors | What are the one-qubit and two-qubit gate fidelities and readout errors, and under what conditions were they measured? | Errors accumulate with operations and can limit useful circuit size. |
| Depth and cycles | How many circuit layers or repeated error-correction rounds have been demonstrated? | A wide array may still be unable to run a deep program reliably. |
| Connectivity and parallelism | Which atoms can interact, how quickly can they be repositioned, and how many operations can run at once? | Geometry and scheduling determine how efficiently a problem maps to the hardware. |
| Loss and full run time | How often are atoms lost, can the array be reloaded or reused, and how long does a complete experiment take? | Gate time alone omits loading, rearrangement, readout, and recovery. |
| Workload and access | Is the result analog simulation, gate-based computation, or fault-tolerant computation, and how is the system accessed? | These modes solve different kinds of tasks and are not interchangeable performance claims. |
The 2023 review emphasizes application-dependent metrics. Comparisons should use measurements made on comparable tasks and conditions; a single qubit-count figure cannot support a claim that one platform is better overall.
What recent scale claims mean
On March 24, 2026, Google Quantum AI said neutral-atom arrays could reach about ten thousand qubits. This is the company’s statement about the modality, not an independent benchmark of a generally available processor. In the same post, Google identified deep circuits with many cycles as an outstanding challenge for neutral atoms. Treat the scale claim and the circuit-depth caveat as separate points: an array can be large while the set of reliable computations it can run remains constrained.
That gap is central to understanding the field. More physical atoms can provide room for larger experiments or error-correcting codes, but useful scaling also requires sufficiently accurate gates, low loss, reliable readout, workable loading and movement, and repeated operations that preserve the logical information. The engineering question is not only how many atoms fit in an array, but what computation the system can complete with them.
