Neural rendering is not a single replacement for traditional graphics. It is a family of techniques that uses learned models for particular parts of image synthesis—such as scene representation, materials, lighting, or image reconstruction. Many approaches keep familiar tools like meshes, rasterization, and ray tracing, then add a neural component where it may improve appearance, speed, or both. The practical difference depends on what the model does, what work remains in the conventional pipeline, and how the method behaves on the target scene and hardware.
What traditional real-time graphics does
A conventional real-time renderer starts from an explicit scene: objects are usually described by geometry such as triangles, with materials, lights, and a camera. The renderer turns that description into pixels using a sequence of operations. Two central approaches are rasterization and ray tracing, and modern systems may combine them rather than choose only one.

Rasterization turns geometry into screen-space fragments
In rasterization, the renderer projects triangles onto the screen, determines which fragments are visible, and shades those fragments using material and lighting calculations. Depth testing, commonly using a z-buffer, helps decide which surfaces are in front. This pipeline is highly optimized for interactive graphics, which is why it remains central to games and other real-time applications.
Rasterization is not inherently “non-realistic.” It can produce convincing images using detailed assets, carefully designed materials, shadows, reflections, and other effects. But some effects—especially complex indirect lighting, where light bounces between surfaces—can be difficult or costly to approximate with conventional raster techniques alone.

Ray tracing follows light paths through a scene
Ray tracing sends rays through scene geometry to estimate visibility and light transport. It can model effects such as reflections and indirect illumination more directly than many raster techniques, but tracing enough rays for a clean image can be computationally expensive. Real-time renderers therefore often mix ray tracing with rasterization or use approximations, sampling strategies, and reconstruction methods to meet a frame-time budget.
What “neural rendering” means
Neural rendering describes methods that use machine-learning models as part of rendering or represent a scene with learned data. It does not specify one rendering pipeline. A model might encode a 3D scene, predict how a material reflects light, estimate indirect illumination, shade rasterized fragments, denoise a noisy image, or reconstruct an output image. Some methods rely on an explicit mesh; others use learned representations; hybrid methods combine both.
The model may be trained before use, optimized for a particular scene, updated during rendering, or simply run at inference time. Its position in the pipeline matters: a learned lighting estimate is a different intervention from a neural shader or a learned scene representation. Calling all of them “AI rendering” without specifying the task obscures the technical difference.

A survey of neural rendering describes the broader shift as combining graphics and machine learning to synthesize images from observations, in contrast with traditional synthetic image generation based on rasterization or ray tracing over defined scene representations. In practice, the boundary is porous: a neural method can still depend on explicit geometry, standard visibility tests, and established graphics hardware.

How the approaches compare
| Question | Traditional real-time graphics | Neural rendering |
|---|---|---|
| What represents the scene? | Often explicit meshes, materials, lights, and textures. | May use those same assets, a learned representation, or a hybrid. |
| Where does the main work happen? | Rasterization, ray tracing, and conventional shading or reconstruction. | A learned component can be inserted into representation, shading, lighting, or image synthesis. |
| What is prepared in advance? | Assets and rendering data are authored or processed for the engine. | Depending on the method, the workflow may add training, scene optimization, baking, or a learned model. |
| How is behavior controlled? | Artists and developers edit geometry, materials, lights, and renderer settings. | Control may use those same controls, learned parameters, or both; it varies by implementation. |
| What is the performance question? | Measure the complete renderer on the target scene and hardware. | Measure model cost plus the conventional pipeline it relies on, on the same scene and hardware. |
| What can go wrong? | Costly effects, sampling noise, or approximations may limit quality or speed. | In addition to rendering issues, results can be limited by training coverage, representation, or model behavior on difficult views and materials. |
This is a framework for asking the right questions, not a claim that either column has one fixed cost or quality level. A meaningful comparison needs a specific method, scene, settings, hardware, and output target.
Where neural methods fit into real pipelines
Learned scene representation with rasterized polygons: MobileNeRF
MobileNeRF illustrates why “neural” does not necessarily mean abandoning conventional rendering. Its scene is represented with textured polygons. Standard z-buffer rasterization produces per-pixel features, and a view-dependent multilayer perceptron in a fragment shader converts those features into color. The neural network contributes to appearance, but rasterization still handles the polygon rendering step.
The MobileNeRF authors report interactive frame rates on platforms that include mobile phones. That is a result for their method and implementation, not a guarantee that any neural technique will run quickly on any phone. They also identify limitations: semi-transparent surfaces are not handled well, close-up views can lose detail, and glossy surfaces are less well handled than by some newer methods. Those constraints matter when considering a scene with glass, fine surface detail, or prominent polished objects.

That “at least 30 times” figure belongs to those scenes and comparisons. It is not a general speed ratio between neural and traditional rendering, nor can it be directly compared with results from another paper that used different scenes, hardware, settings, or quality targets. The example shows that a neural component can be designed to fit an efficient rasterization workflow; it does not establish a universal performance winner.
Learned indirect-light estimates inside ray tracing
Neural Radiance Caching targets indirect illumination: light that has bounced around a scene. NVIDIA’s 2021 technical description presents a small neural network that is trained and evaluated at runtime, with Tensor Cores and ray-tracing hardware used within a ray-tracing workflow. Rather than replacing ray tracing, the network estimates global illumination as part of that workflow.
NVIDIA reported more than one billion global-illumination queries per second on an NVIDIA RTX 3090 for its described method. It also reported an efficiency improvement of up to a factor of 100 when Neural Radiance Caching was combined with ReSTIR. These are NVIDIA’s results for that method and experimental context. They should not be read as a general neural-rendering benchmark, a promise for other GPUs, or a direct comparison with an unrelated renderer.

That reported advantage is specific to the implementation, tested materials, and evaluation described by the authors. It does not show that neural shaders are always faster than conventional materials. A renderer still has to account for the model’s own compute and memory costs, its integration with the material workflow, and whether it represents the relevant appearance faithfully.
Does neural rendering replace rasterization or ray tracing?
Usually, the more useful question is which part of the rendering work is learned. MobileNeRF and Real-Time Neural Rasterization both preserve rasterization. Neural Radiance Caching adds a network to a ray-tracing workflow, and the neural appearance-model example also operates inside a path tracer. These methods demonstrate that neural rendering often supplements established graphics techniques rather than replacing them outright.
NVIDIA’s 2026 DLSS 5 announcement describes 3D-guided neural rendering that works alongside traditional rasterization, ray tracing, and path tracing. NVIDIA says the model uses engine data and Tensor Cores on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs. Those are capabilities as described in the announcement; compatibility and shipping availability depend on the feature’s current support and implementation. An announcement alone is not evidence that every game, engine, or compatible GPU can use it.

Can neural rendering improve graphics or performance?
It can, when the learned component addresses a real bottleneck or enables an appearance that is useful for the application. A learned model might reduce the work needed to estimate indirect light, accelerate a particular material representation, or produce view-dependent appearance from a compact scene representation. The examples above show reported gains for their defined tasks; they do not establish a general improvement across all scenes or systems.
Best Value
Performance should be judged end to end, not by counting neural queries or looking only at one stage. Ask how the method affects frame time, memory use, preprocessing, and hardware requirements, and whether it meets the same image-quality target as the comparison. A model that makes one calculation cheaper may still require substantial setup or leave other pipeline costs untouched.
Quality also depends on the scene and the effect. Neural methods can be sensitive to training coverage, view changes, or materials unlike those represented during preparation. Conventional approaches have their own approximations and costs. Neither “AI” nor “traditional” is a reliable proxy for fidelity, stability, or speed without a task-specific evaluation.
Trade-offs and failure cases to check
Surface types and fine detail
Some learned representations have difficulty with semi-transparent surfaces, glossy reflections, or close-up detail. The MobileNeRF authors specifically report limitations in those areas. If these features are central to a scene, inspect them at the intended viewing distance and across camera motion rather than judging a method from a distant or static example.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEffects can diverge across rendering modes
NVIDIA’s Omniverse documentation notes that its Real-Time 2.0 path-tracing mode can diverge from its interactive path-tracing mode in some effects, including subsurface scattering, depth of field, and volume rendering. This is a product-specific qualification, not proof that all real-time or neural rendering shares those differences. It is a reminder to compare the exact modes and effects that matter in the intended workflow.
Temporal stability and deployment matter
A still image does not reveal whether fine detail flickers as the camera moves, whether a learned result remains stable during animation, or how the method behaves outside views represented during training. Deployment also depends on engine integration, supported hardware, and the presence of a fallback path. These are practical requirements, not secondary details: a method that looks convincing in a prepared demonstration may not be suitable for a production scene or a target device.
How to evaluate a neural-rendering method for a real project
- Identify the task. Decide whether the proposed method changes scene representation, materials, lighting, denoising, upscaling, or final image synthesis. If the description only says “neural rendering,” ask what stage is actually learned.
- Check the representation and authoring workflow. Establish whether the project still uses editable meshes, textures, lights, and materials, or needs a learned scene representation. Find out how artists adjust the result and what data or per-scene optimization is required.
- Test the scene’s difficult cases. Include the surfaces, lighting, view distances, and motion that are important to the project—for example transparency, glossy objects, fine detail, or indirect light. Check behavior while the camera and scene move.
- Measure under matched conditions. Compare methods on the same hardware, scene, resolution, quality target, and rendering settings. Include the complete runtime cost and memory use; do not treat results from different papers as a controlled head-to-head test.
- Verify delivery constraints. Confirm supported GPUs and platforms, engine integration, feature availability, and fallback behavior for unsupported systems. For a newly announced feature, distinguish the announced design from confirmed support in the target application.
Which approach should you choose?
Choose by the rendering problem and production constraints, not by whether a method is labeled neural. An established rasterizer may be the right foundation for an interactive scene with explicit assets and broad platform needs. Ray tracing may be important for a workflow that prioritizes particular light-transport effects and can afford their cost. A neural component can be valuable when it improves a defined task without compromising authoring control, stability, or deployment requirements.
For a specific method, compare representation, pipeline location, authoring control, preparation, runtime compute and memory, temporal behavior, visual fidelity on relevant materials, and hardware coverage. The cited examples establish that neural and conventional techniques can be combined in several ways, but they do not establish one universally superior approach or a neutral cross-method benchmark.
