Netflix downloads are temporary offline viewing copies stored on the device used to download them—not permanent files you can keep or move between devices. Whether you can download a title, how many downloads you can make, and how long they last depends on a mix of device compatibility, your plan, and title-specific licensing. Netflix’s current help guidance sets a general ceiling of up to 100 active downloads per device, while ad-supported plans have a separate monthly download allowance.
What a Netflix download is—and what it is not
A download lets you watch an eligible Netflix title offline in the Netflix app on the device where you downloaded it. Downloads stay on that device, but any Netflix profile on that same device can view them. They are not permanent copies: a title can expire, leave Netflix, or be subject to restrictions on downloading it again. Netflix says you can watch a download as many times as you like before it expires. See Netflix’s explanation of expired downloads.

That distinction matters if you are planning to watch without an internet connection. Downloading is a way to prepare eligible titles for offline viewing, not a guarantee that every title will be available indefinitely. A title’s download status and the rules governing your account can change what is possible.
Which devices support Netflix downloads?
Netflix lists these device categories for downloads: Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets, and Google Chromebooks with Google Play installed. You need the latest Netflix app, and Netflix cautions that older operating-system versions may not support downloads. The category alone does not guarantee compatibility for every model or OS version; check that the device can run the current app. Netflix’s download help page has the current supported-device guidance.

A device also needs enough available storage for the titles you intend to save. Netflix’s cited guidance does not specify a minimum amount of storage or recommend particular device models, so there is no universal storage figure to apply. If a device is supported but a download will not start, first confirm that the app and operating system are up to date, then check the title’s eligibility and the account limits described below.
How to download an eligible title
- Check the device. Use one of Netflix’s listed device categories, install the latest Netflix app, and make sure the operating system is not an older version that lacks download support.
- Find a downloadable title. Look for the Downloads icon on the title. Not every show or film is available for download. In the app, you can also use its downloadable-title browsing option to find eligible choices.
- Download while connected. Select the title’s download control in the Netflix app. Netflix recommends using Wi-Fi to reduce mobile data use.
- Watch on the same device. Find the downloaded title in the app on the device where you saved it. Other Netflix profiles on that device can also view the downloads.
- Check its status before relying on it. Netflix may show that a download has expired or that a title cannot be downloaded again yet. Those messages point to different limits and have different remedies.
If you cancel your Netflix membership, Netflix says downloads on the device are deleted. If you restart membership, you will need to download titles again. The app’s current eligibility and account limits still apply.
Netflix download limits: active titles versus monthly downloads
Two separate rules are easy to confuse: the number of downloads currently active on a device and the number of downloads an ad-supported plan permits during a calendar month. Netflix states that users can have up to 100 active downloads at a time per device, with the number of devices depending on the Netflix plan. That is a ceiling on active downloads, not a monthly allowance. The rule appears on Netflix’s offline-download help page.

Ad-supported plans have an additional limit: 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. The allowance resets on the first day of each month. This is a count of downloads made during the month, separate from how many titles remain active on the device. Netflix’s “Download Max Reached” help page describes the rule. Its example error mentions two total devices; that number belongs to the example message, not a universal device allowance for every plan.
Netflix does not establish a single device count that applies to all plans in the cited guidance. The plan determines how many devices may hold downloads, so check the account’s plan information or the Manage Download Devices page for the limit that applies to you.

Why a download expires—and whether you can renew it
Netflix does not give one expiration duration that applies to every title. A downloaded title expires after a period of time, but the general help guidance does not state a universal number of days. If a title is still available and no repeat-download restriction blocks it, Netflix’s troubleshooting instructions are to delete the expired download and download it again.
There are two important exceptions. First, if the title has left Netflix, you cannot renew that download or download the title again from Netflix. Second, licensing agreements can limit how many times some titles may be downloaded or renewed. If the limit is reached, Netflix says you must watch the title while connected to the internet. Its expired-title guidance explains these cases.
Some titles also have a title-specific annual download restriction. Netflix’s notices for iPhone and iPad and Android describe messages indicating that another download may not be available for up to a year, or that the title can only be downloaded one more time before a displayed date. This is not a yearly limit applied to every Netflix title. Follow the date or remaining-download information Netflix shows for that particular title.
Fix “Download Max Reached”
If you see “Download Max Reached” on an ad-supported plan, the relevant restriction is the monthly allowance, not the general active-download ceiling. Netflix sets the limit at 15 total downloads per device per calendar month, with the count resetting on the first day of the next month. Deleting a title from the device does not change the fact that the rule counts downloads made during the calendar month. For the service’s explanation of the error, see Netflix’s Download Max Reached page.
If the message does not match that error, check whether the device has reached its active-download ceiling or whether your plan’s device limit is involved. Those are different restrictions, so removing a title or waiting for a monthly reset will not necessarily solve every download problem.

Fix “You have downloads on too many devices”
This message means the maximum number of devices allowed to hold downloads under your plan has been reached. It is about the number of devices, not simply the number of titles on one device. Netflix directs subscribers to Manage Download Devices to check the limit for their plan and provides app and browser instructions for removing downloads from another device. You can also delete all downloads directly from a device. Use the current instructions on Netflix’s too-many-devices help page.
- Check Manage Download Devices to see the account’s current device allowance.
- If another device is using a slot, remove downloads from that device using Netflix’s app or browser instructions.
- If you can access the device itself, delete its downloads there instead.
- Try again on the intended device after removing the other downloads.
Do not assume that the number in an example error message is your plan’s limit. Netflix’s device allowance varies by plan; the account’s Manage Download Devices page is the relevant place to check it.
Fix an expired title or a repeat-download warning
- The message says “Expired.” If the title is still on Netflix, delete the download and try again. Netflix says a title that has left the service cannot be renewed or downloaded again.
- The title can only be downloaded one more time. This points to a title-specific licensing restriction. Read any displayed date or remaining-download information, then decide whether to stream the title while online or wait until Netflix allows another download.
- The title is missing a Downloads icon. Netflix does not make every title downloadable. Choose a title that has the icon or use the app’s downloadable-title browsing option.
- The app will not download anything on the device. Confirm that the device belongs to a supported category, install the latest Netflix app, and check whether its operating system is too old to support downloads.
- You are preparing after restarting membership. Netflix says cancellation deletes device downloads, so download the titles again after restarting. Each title must still be eligible and within the applicable limits.
Which limit should you check first?
Match the message or symptom to the rule rather than treating all download failures as the same problem:
| What you see | Likely rule | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| “Download Max Reached” on an ad-supported plan | Monthly download allowance | Netflix allows 15 total downloads per device per calendar month on ad-supported plans; the allowance resets on the first day of the month. Netflix Help |
| Downloads on too many devices | Plan’s device allowance | Check Manage Download Devices and remove downloads from another device. Netflix Help |
| A downloaded title says “Expired” | Title’s expiration or availability | Delete and download again if the title remains available and licensing permits it. Netflix Help |
| A title has reached its download limit | Title-specific licensing restriction | Use the displayed date or remaining-download notice; stream online if another download is not available. Netflix Help for iPhone/iPad and Netflix Help for Android |
| No Downloads icon or downloads unsupported on the device | Title eligibility or device compatibility | Choose an eligible title and check the current device and app requirements. Netflix Help |
The useful order is: verify the device and title first, identify the exact error, then check the specific limit implicated by that error. A monthly cap, an active-download cap, a plan’s device allowance, and a title’s licensing restriction are separate constraints; solving one does not automatically remove another.
