How NBA Contracts Handle Missed Games and Player Holdouts

An NBA player does not automatically lose salary for every missed game. The reason for the absence, applicable CBA rule, and player contract determine the consequences.

Missing an NBA game does not automatically mean a player loses salary. The consequence depends on why the player is absent, whether a suspension or refusal to provide contracted services has been established, the 2023 NBA-NBPA collective bargaining agreement (CBA), and the player’s contract. Injury, team-approved rest, discipline, and a holdout are different situations—not interchangeable labels.

Which rules govern missed NBA games?

The baseline for the current agreement term is the 2023 NBA-NBPA CBA. The NBPA describes the agreement as setting employment terms and the rights and obligations of players, clubs, the league, and the union. NBA Communications announced that the signed agreement took effect on July 1, 2023, and runs through the 2029-30 season.

The CBA and an individual player’s contract govern employment and compensation questions. The NBA’s separate Player Participation Policy addresses team decisions about player availability. It should not be treated as a substitute for the CBA’s rules about compensation when a player refuses to render services. The NBA announced that the policy took effect in the 2023-24 regular season and described exceptions involving injury, personal reasons, and pre-approved restrictions in specified back-to-back circumstances.

For a player-specific dispute, the signed agreement, the player’s contract, any applicable policy updates, and the facts behind the absence all matter. A missed-game count alone does not establish the reason or the legal consequence.

Do NBA players get paid when they miss games?

There is no single pay rule for every absence. Injury, a team’s rest decision, a proper-cause suspension, and an unjustified failure or refusal to provide contracted services fall into different categories.

Situation Relevant framework What the available terms establish
Injury The player’s contract and CBA A reproduced Uniform Player Contract describes team payment of reasonable hospital and medical expenses for an injury directly resulting from participation in team practice or games, subject to contract terms and limits. It does not establish identical salary treatment for every injury-related absence.
Team-approved rest or availability decision NBA Player Participation Policy and applicable CBA or contract provisions The NBA policy governs specified team participation decisions; it is not itself a general salary-forfeiture rule for a player who refuses services.
Proper-cause suspension CBA The NBA’s 2024-25 CBA 101 states specific per-game reductions in base compensation, with the rate depending on suspension length.
Failure or refusal to render services CBA and player contract A secondary reproduction of CBA text gives a different per-game reduction when the failure or refusal is without proper and reasonable cause or excuse. Verify the clause in the signed agreement before applying it to an individual case.

These categories should not be inferred from appearances alone. An absence does not, by itself, show that a player is holding out, that a contract is guaranteed or non-guaranteed, or that a suspension or refusal finding has been made.

How much salary can a player lose for a suspension?

The NBA’s 2024-25 CBA 101 says that when a player is suspended by the team or NBA for proper cause other than failure or refusal to render required services, compensation is reduced by a specified fraction of base compensation for each missed game:

  • Suspension of fewer than 20 games: 1/145th of base compensation for each missed game.
  • Suspension of 20 games or more: 1/110th of base compensation for each missed game.

“When a player is, for proper cause other than the player’s failure or refusal to render the services required by his contract or the CBA, suspended by his team or the NBA, his compensation will be reduced by 1/145th for each missed game for any suspension of fewer than 20 games, and by 1/110th for each missed game for any suspension of 20 or more games.”

— NBA, 2024-25 CBA 101

Those are CBA rates for the stated kind and length of suspension, not a universal deduction for every game a player misses. They are expressed as fractions of base compensation; they do not determine the outcome of a different absence category.

What happens when a player holds out?

A holdout generally refers to a player failing or refusing to report or provide services required by the contract. Whether conduct qualifies as an unjustified failure or refusal, and what follows, depends on the circumstances and the CBA process; the label alone does not resolve the dispute.

A secondary reproduction of CBA text states that a player who fails or refuses, without proper and reasonable cause or excuse, to render required services has base compensation reduced by 1/91.6th for each missed exhibition, regular-season, play-in, or playoff game. Because this surfaced wording is not from the official NBPA agreement page, treat the figure as provisional and check the signed CBA before relying on it in a particular case.

Search excerpts also refer to a special consequence when a player withholds services for more than 30 days after the start of the contract’s final season. The full clause, its operation, and its exceptions are not established here by a primary-source passage. It is therefore not sound to claim that any holdout automatically cancels free-agency rights or prevents a player from signing elsewhere. Those questions require the exact signed CBA text and advice informed by the specific facts.

How is an injury absence different from a holdout?

An injury is not the same as a refusal to play. The reproduced Uniform Player Contract addresses reasonable medical and hospital expenses for qualifying injuries connected directly to team practices or games, subject to the contract’s limits. That provision does not settle every question about salary, guarantees, medical status, or the length of an absence.

Similarly, a team’s decision to rest a player should not automatically be described as a player’s refusal of services. The NBA Player Participation Policy addresses specified team decisions about participation, including exceptions described by the league for injury and personal reasons and pre-approved restrictions in certain back-to-back situations. Those policy provisions and the CBA’s compensation rules answer different questions.

What should be checked in a specific case?

  1. Identify the reason for the absence. Determine whether it is attributed to injury, a team participation decision, a suspension, or a failure or refusal to report or provide services.
  2. Identify the governing rule. Separate the player’s contract and CBA provisions from the NBA Player Participation Policy, which concerns team conduct and participation decisions.
  3. Check whether a formal determination exists. A missed game alone does not establish that a suspension was imposed or that a refusal was found to lack proper and reasonable cause.
  4. Read the relevant contract terms. Guarantees, compensation language, and other clauses may affect the player-specific result; do not assume them from the absence.
  5. Use the current signed documents. The agreement term began July 1, 2023, but amendments, later policy changes, and the precise facts should be checked before making a current or player-specific conclusion.
