You can log expenses by sending a Telegram bot a text message—or, with an audio transcription step enabled, a voice message. An n8n workflow can parse the message into expense fields, append one or more rows to Google Sheets, then send a confirmation in Telegram. The voice-and-text template documents this design, but it has no independently reported accuracy or accounting benchmark.
How the voice-and-text workflow works
The n8n template connects three services: Telegram receives your message and delivers the reply, n8n runs the automation, and Google Sheets stores the resulting entries. The workflow author describes a sequence that can handle a single expense or several expenses in one message.

- Receive the message: A Telegram trigger starts the workflow when the bot receives text or a voice message.
- Transcribe voice, if enabled: An audio branch converts a voice message to text. The template suggests Whisper for this step; voice input depends on having transcription configured.
- Parse expense details: An AI step turns the text into structured expense data using the workflow’s specified schema.
- Separate multiple expenses: A Split Out step creates an item for each expense, so a message such as “Gas 34.67, Groceries 82.45, Coffee 6.25, Lunch 14.90” can produce separate entries.
- Append rows: A loop writes the expense items to the sheet sequentially. The template suggests a 500–1000 ms wait between writes to reduce missed writes caused by API race conditions. This is the author’s setup guidance, not a universal requirement for every n8n workflow.
- Send a confirmation: A parallel path builds a summary, and the workflow waits for both paths before sending one Telegram confirmation.

What you need to configure
Prepare the spreadsheet
Create a Google Sheet with these headers, then map the corresponding workflow values to the append step:

The sheet’s headers and the workflow’s mappings need to agree. If you change the schema or column names, adjust the mapping as well.
Connect the services
The template setup calls for Telegram, Google, and OpenAI credentials. If you want voice input, configure the transcription step too. The chosen AI model and transcription service are configuration choices; the template’s examples should not be treated as permanent requirements.

For Telegram integration details, see the n8n Telegram node documentation. The template’s suggested write delay is a starting point to consider for its sequential-write design, not proof that every sheet or workflow needs the same delay.
Choose between natural messages and a command format
If you do not need voice or AI interpretation, a separate n8n template uses a more structured command: /spent 5 lunch. It appends the expense to Google Sheets and documents options for a weekly summary and a configurable budget warning. Its setup instructions include creating a Telegram bot through BotFather, copying the supplied sheet, connecting Google credentials, setting the chat and sheet IDs, and running the workflow on n8n Cloud or self-hosted n8n. The command format asks you to organize the input yourself, while natural-language parsing is intended to extract fields from less rigid messages. Voice adds a transcription step. The templates describe these capabilities; they do not establish that one approach is more accurate in real-world use.
A more complex option: receipts and reporting
A third template describes accepting text, voice, or receipt photos, with currency detection and reporting features. It also requires a copied Google Sheet and an n8n Data Table for report state, so it is a distinct, more involved setup—not simply another mode of the voice-and-text workflow. What the templates do not establish
These are template authors’ descriptions and setup instructions, not independent tests. They do not establish transcription or categorization accuracy, accounting reliability, or tax compliance. Review the parsed fields and spreadsheet rows before relying on them for reimbursement, bookkeeping, or tax records. A successful append and Telegram confirmation show that the workflow ran; they do not independently verify that every expense was interpreted correctly.
