Yes—MySQL Community Server can run natively on Apple silicon when you install a macOS ARM64 build. In Oracle’s download listing, MySQL 8.0.46 was available for macOS 15 as ARM 64-bit, alongside separate x86_64 packages. Choose ARM64 for native execution on an M1, M2, or other Apple silicon Mac; use an Intel build only when you have a specific compatibility reason.
What ARM64 compatibility means on an Apple silicon Mac
ARM64 and x86_64 are different processor architectures. Apple silicon Macs use ARM-based processors, so an ARM64 MySQL package is built for the Mac’s architecture and runs natively. An x86_64 package is built for Intel processors; on Apple silicon it may run through Apple’s Rosetta translation layer, subject to macOS-version limits.

Oracle’s MySQL Community Server download page listed version 8.0.46 for macOS 15 (Sequoia) in ARM 64-bit formats, including DMG, TAR.GZ, and TAR packages. The same listing says packages for macOS 15 are compatible with macOS 14 (Sonoma). These are version-specific details, not a guarantee for every MySQL release or future macOS version. Which MySQL option should you choose?
| Option | Architecture and execution | Installation or administration | Compatibility and support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native macOS ARM64 package | ARM64 binaries run natively on Apple silicon. | Oracle documents a DMG installer and compressed TAR archive for macOS. | Preferred when the specific MySQL release is listed for your macOS version. Oracle’s verified 8.0.46 listing included macOS 15 ARM64 packages. |
| Intel x86_64 package with Rosetta | Intel binaries run through Apple’s translation layer on Apple silicon. | Use the macOS package’s documented installation method. | A possible fallback through macOS 27, but not a durable choice: Apple says Rosetta’s role narrows substantially starting with macOS 28. |
| MySQL Docker image | The MySQL-team images are built for Linux and run in a container. | Managed as a containerized development environment rather than as a native macOS package. | Oracle says other platforms are unsupported and used at the user’s risk; do not treat this as an officially supported native macOS installation. |
Oracle’s retrieved MySQL 8.4.11 LTS download page did not show macOS ARM64 server package options. That does not establish that a package is unavailable; it means the available listing is insufficient to confirm exact 8.4 ARM64 availability. How to install a native ARM64 build
Use the DMG installer
- Open Oracle’s MySQL Community Server download page and select the required release and macOS version.
- Choose the ARM 64-bit package, not the x86_64 package. Confirm the package format and macOS compatibility shown for that release.
- Download and open the DMG, then follow the installer. Oracle’s macOS installation guide says this installer requires administrator privileges: MySQL 8.0 macOS installation guide.
- If you want to manage the server using the package’s launch-daemon or preference-pane options, consult the guide for those controls and the version you installed.
Use the TAR archive
- On the same download page, select the ARM 64-bit TAR archive for the appropriate release and macOS version.
- Verify the downloaded package using the checksums and GnuPG signature instructions on Oracle’s download page.
- Follow Oracle’s macOS guide to install the archive in Terminal. Oracle says this method does not require administrator privileges and allows installation anywhere.
The guide describes MySQL 8.0 installation procedures; check the documentation for your chosen release rather than assuming every version has identical steps.
When does Rosetta make sense?
An Intel x86_64 build can be a fallback if the release or tool you need is available only for Intel, or if you must maintain an existing Intel-based setup. Apple’s guidance covers Intel apps on Apple silicon through macOS 27. Apple recommends updating to an Apple silicon version for optimal performance and future compatibility. Beginning with macOS 28, Apple says Rosetta functionality will remain only for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks. See Apple Support: Using Intel-based apps on a Mac with Apple silicon.

For a new or long-lived MySQL development environment, prefer a native ARM64 package whenever the required release offers one. Rosetta is a compatibility fallback, not a reason to select the Intel download when a suitable ARM64 build is listed.
Is Docker an officially supported Mac installation?
No. Oracle’s MySQL 8.4 Reference Manual says the MySQL Docker images maintained by the MySQL team are built specifically for Linux; other platforms are unsupported, and users running those images on them do so at their own risk. Docker may still be useful for local development, but the image’s Linux target and Oracle’s support boundary should be part of that decision. Read Oracle’s MySQL 8.4 Docker deployment guidance.
Quick Recap
How to confirm you downloaded the right package
- Check that the download selector identifies the package as ARM 64-bit or ARM64 for macOS, rather than x86_64.
- Match the package’s listed macOS support to the macOS version installed on your Mac. Oracle’s 8.0.46 listing says macOS 15 packages are compatible with macOS 14, but that compatibility statement should not be generalized to other releases.
- Verify the file’s integrity using the checksum and signature information supplied on Oracle’s download page.
- If ARM64 is not listed for your chosen release, verify the current selector and documentation before substituting an Intel build or a Docker image; each has a different compatibility or support trade-off.
