Music licensing determines which songs a rhythm game can offer, where and how long they are available, and whether they can appear in a separate game or subscription. When a license ends, a publisher may stop selling a game or song pack, remove tracks from a service, negotiate new rights for another product, or seek to bring selected songs back. Those changes do not automatically erase a player’s existing purchase—but continued access depends on the specific game and publisher policy.
Why songs disappear from rhythm games
A rhythm game needs permission to use music in the product and context its publisher offers. Ubisoft’s Rocksmith development team described licensing as involving careful work and discussions with artists and labels, calling it one of the foundations of the series. That dependence on rights-holder arrangements means a game’s song list is not necessarily fixed for its entire lifespan.

A license can expire or otherwise stop covering a product. The publisher may then remove a song, pack, or even a game from sale. A track might remain playable for someone who bought it earlier, while a new player can no longer purchase it. In another case, a song may leave one service but remain in a separate catalog. These outcomes are different: “not for sale,” “removed from a subscription,” and “no longer playable by existing owners” are not interchangeable.

Catalogs, store listings, and service features can change, so check the notice for the exact title, platform, region, and date that matter to you.

What a license does—and does not—carry over to
A song’s presence in one game does not prove that the publisher can offer it in another. Ubisoft said in a July 2021 Rocksmith+ developer diary that the subscription service used new licensing deals and required renegotiating music deals. It also said that Rocksmith+ would initially include less than a majority of the songs in Rocksmith 2014.
That is why a track can be available in a one-time-purchase game but absent from a later title or subscription. Rights for one product do not, by themselves, establish permission for another product or service. A player should not assume that buying a song once means it will transfer to a sequel, subscription, different platform, or another use of the music.
In-game play is also distinct from recording or sharing gameplay audio. Epic’s creator guidance for Fortnite Festival warned that third-party copyright detection could flag VODs or clips featuring selected Jam Tracks. A game’s permission to include music for play does not guarantee that every recording or upload will be treated the same way by a video platform or copyright system. The available publisher guidance does not establish a complete legal checklist of music rights for every territory and use, so it would be misleading to treat these examples as a universal legal formula.

Delisting is not the same as losing a purchase
Ubisoft’s Rocksmith 2014 announcement set October 23, 2023 as the date the game would be removed from stores and said DLC packs and singles would be removed over time. The notice also gave scheduled removals for songs and packs. The important practical distinction in that announcement was between future sales and existing purchases: Ubisoft said owners of Rocksmith 2014 or its DLC could continue to install, redownload, play, and use those products after delisting. People who had not bought them would no longer be able to purchase them digitally once they were removed.
That owner-access promise applies to the Rocksmith 2014 products described by Ubisoft; it is not a guarantee for every game. Another publisher, title, platform, or service may set different terms. A delisting notice should be read for what it specifically says about previously purchased content, downloads, and play—not just for the date sales stop.
If you already own the game or DLC
- Read the publisher’s notice for the exact title and platform. Check whether it addresses play, installation, and redownloads separately.
- Keep the purchase record and account associated with the purchase. The Rocksmith 2014 announcement is an example of a publisher explicitly describing continued access for previous buyers.
- If you rely on a digital copy, check that it appears in your account library and can be installed while the store listing is still available. This is a sensible precaution, not a promise that every publisher will preserve access.
- Do not infer that owning a base game includes every song pack, or that owning one product grants access to tracks in a different product.
If you have not bought it yet
Once a game or DLC item is delisted, a new digital purchase may no longer be possible. Check the publisher’s effective date and any platform-specific announcement before relying on a store listing. Ubisoft’s Rocksmith 2014 notice included an announced removal date and scheduled DLC removals; those historical dates explain what Ubisoft announced, not what every store or platform offers today.

How the same publisher can treat catalogs differently
Licensing changes can be scoped to a particular game or service rather than applied uniformly across a publisher’s music products. In April 2024, Ubisoft announced that selected songs would be removed from Just Dance Now and Just Dance Unlimited on different dates, while saying the Just Dance+ catalog would remain unaffected. The notice described those planned changes at that time; it should not be read as a guarantee of present-day availability in October 2026.
This illustrates why a player should identify the exact service, not just the franchise. A song’s removal from one subscription or game does not establish that it was removed from every related product. Conversely, a track remaining in a separate catalog does not mean a player automatically owns it or can access it through another title.

Can removed songs return?
Sometimes a publisher may seek new permission for selected songs. Ubisoft later said that, after the original Rocksmith music licenses expired, it made Rocksmith 2014 Learn & Play available as a one-time purchase on Steam and was working to relicense some popular songs that had disappeared from stores.

This shows that a publisher can pursue renewed rights for some material, but it is not a promise that every removed song will return. A relisting also does not, by itself, explain whether the song comes back in the same product, on the same platforms, in every region, or under the same purchase model. Those details need to come from a specific availability announcement or store listing.

Epic’s support page, checked in October 2026, says Fortnite Festival is not ending. It states that Battle Stage went offline on April 16, 2026, while Main Stage and Jam Stage and music features across Fortnite would continue to be improved. A change to one mode’s status is not evidence that every individual song remains available; mode availability and song availability are separate questions.

It also said Fortnite’s Licensed Audio options, “Mute Others” and “Mute All,” did not then apply to Main Stage. That guidance was published for the game’s launch period, so creators should check current Epic and platform guidance before relying on those specific controls or recommendations.
How to check what a licensing change means for you
- Identify the exact item. Note the game, song or pack, subscription service, platform, and region. A franchise name alone may cover several separate catalogs.
- Find the publisher’s notice or current store listing. Prefer a dated publisher announcement for announced removals and a current listing for present availability. Older dates, including Ubisoft’s 2024 Just Dance notice, describe what was announced then.
- Separate sale status from owner access. Look for explicit statements about whether new purchases stop, whether prior buyers can still play, and whether redownloads are supported. Do not assume one answer resolves all three questions.
- Check catalog transfer rather than assuming it. If moving to a sequel, subscription, or other platform, verify that the song is listed there and whether the new product requires a separate purchase or access plan.
- For clips and streams, check the creator rules independently. In-game access is not assurance against a third-party copyright flag. Confirm current game settings and platform policies before publishing gameplay audio.
What players should take away
Music licensing affects both what can be bought and what can remain in a live catalog, but the consequences depend on the product and the publisher’s stated policy. Rocksmith 2014 demonstrates that a delisting can end new digital sales while preserving specified access for existing owners. Rocksmith+ demonstrates that a new service can require new deals and launch without most of an earlier game’s songs. Ubisoft’s Just Dance notice shows that catalogs within one franchise can follow different schedules, while Fortnite Festival illustrates that game modes, individual songs, and creator-facing audio rules are separate issues.
For a particular song, the reliable answer comes from the relevant dated notice or current listing—not from the assumption that a license, purchase, or catalog entry carries over everywhere.
