A standing desk can hold only the load specified for its exact model; there is no capacity that applies to every desk. To check your setup, add the weight of the desktop if the rating requires it, plus everything the desk supports, then compare that total with the model’s published limit. Check mounted accessories such as monitor arms against their own limits as well.
Why standing desk capacities differ
“Standing desk” describes a broad category, not a common load rating. A full desk, a frame sold for use with a separately purchased top, and a sit-stand workstation can have different specifications. Even products from one manufacturer may list different maximum loads. Ergotron’s buyer’s guide, for example, covers multiple products with different capacities; the category information alone does not establish which number applies to a particular model. Use the exact product specification or manual rather than borrowing a capacity from another desk.

Look for the limit in the desk’s official product page, specification sheet, or manual. Confirm that the model name and configuration match yours, including whether the product is a complete desk or a frame. If the specification is ambiguous, ask the manufacturer to clarify what the rating covers before relying on it.
A capacity figure is meaningful only alongside its definition. In particular, find out whether the stated maximum includes the desktop. A frame designed for a customer-supplied top may describe its rating differently from a complete desk. Ergotron’s materials show why this detail matters: one listing explicitly identifies a load that includes a customer-provided worksurface. That qualification should not be assumed for another product. Check the wording for your exact model in the Ergotron Sit-Stand Desks Buyer’s Guide or the corresponding product documentation.

When you locate a figure, note its units and scope alongside the number. A page might show pounds, kilograms, or both; keep your calculation in one unit and use the unit attached to the matching specification. Also note whether the rating is for a particular configuration. A frame and a complete desk are not automatically interchangeable just because they share a brand or product family. If a page shows several capacities without making clear which model each belongs to, open the exact model’s page or manual instead of choosing the highest or most convenient number.
Manufacturer specifications are the practical reference for this calculation, but a number detached from its product name and definition is not enough to assess a setup. The official pages cited here give product-specific ratings; they do not establish a single industry-wide capacity, a universal loading formula beyond totaling the applicable supported weight, or a standard percentage of unused capacity to preserve.
What counts toward your setup’s load?
Count the top when the rating includes it, and count the equipment and accessories the desk supports. Vari’s FAQ advises users to “Include all accessories and monitors when calculating the total weight on your desk.” That means the total is more than the computer alone. Make an inventory of items that rest on the desk or are attached to it.

- Desktop or tabletop: Include it if the published capacity covers the complete loaded desk rather than only the supported equipment. If the specification is unclear, do not assume the top is excluded.
- Displays and their supports: Count each monitor. If it sits on a stand, include the stand too. If it is held by an arm attached to the desk, count the monitor and arm as desk-supported equipment, while also checking the arm’s own limit.
- Computers and portable devices: Include a desktop computer, laptop, dock, or other device that stays on the desk.
- Other equipment and accessories: Include items such as speakers, hubs, lighting, or organizers if they remain on or are mounted to the desk. Count the items you actually keep there, not every object you might occasionally set down.
Where an item is attached to another item, take care not to count the same weight twice. For instance, if a monitor’s listed weight includes its stand but you replace that stand with an arm, use the weight of the configuration you actually have. If you cannot tell what an item’s published weight includes, check its documentation or weigh the assembled item.
Think about the setup as it is actually used, not just as it looks at the moment you check it. If a laptop, dock, speakers, or other equipment normally remains on the desk, include it even if you sometimes remove it. Conversely, an item that is only occasionally set down does not need to be part of a permanent inventory if you are assessing the usual configuration—but account for it whenever it is on the desk. Revisit the total when you add equipment or change a stand, arm, or top.
An item mounted beneath or alongside the desktop still matters if the desk supports it. A monitor arm clamps to the desk, for example, so its own weight and the monitor it carries are part of the desk-supported setup. If a piece of equipment is assembled from several components, use a weight for the assembled configuration or add the component weights without duplicating parts. The goal is a complete total of what the desk carries, not just the things visible on the desktop.

Calculate the total load step by step
- Identify the desk’s exact model. Find the model name or number on the product paperwork, label, or account record. Match it to the official specification or manual; do not use a general category result or another model’s rating.
- Read the capacity definition. Record the maximum load and whether the desktop is included. If the manual describes a different scope or configuration, follow that documentation. If you cannot establish what is included, contact the manufacturer for clarification.
- List everything the desk supports. Write down the desktop where relevant, each monitor, computer, laptop, dock, stand or arm, and other equipment or accessories that remain on or attached to the desk.
- Find each weight. Use the item’s label or manufacturer specification. If the weight is not available, weigh it rather than guessing. For a component assembled from several parts, make sure the figure you use covers the parts in your actual setup.
- Convert all weights to one unit. Keep the entire calculation in pounds or kilograms. Do not add a value in pounds directly to one in kilograms.
- Add the included weights. If the desk rating includes the desktop, add its weight and the weights of the supported equipment and accessories. If the rating clearly excludes the desktop, calculate the load according to the manufacturer’s stated definition and check any separate guidance for the top.
- Compare the sum with the correct rating. The resulting total must be evaluated against the rating for that exact model and the scope stated in its documentation. If the total approaches the limit, or you are unsure how the rating applies, ask the manufacturer rather than relying on an assumed safety margin.
- Check mounted components separately. Compare the weight carried by each monitor arm or other mounted accessory with that component’s own published limit. A desk rating does not establish the limit of every accessory attached to it.
In shorthand, the desk-load calculation is: included desktop weight + weights of supported equipment and accessories = setup load. Omit the desktop only when the documentation clearly says the desk rating excludes it. The sum is a useful check against the stated maximum, not a substitute for following any other instructions in the product manual.

- Desk model and configuration: record the exact name or number.
- Published capacity and unit: copy the value from the model’s official specification.
- Capacity scope: note whether the desktop is included, excluded, or still unclear.
- Supported items: list each item and its measured or published weight.
- Setup total: add only the weights that belong in the manufacturer’s stated scope.
- Accessory limits: list separate limits for each mounted arm or component and compare them with the loads they carry.
This worksheet is not a new rating or a substitute for a manual; it is a way to avoid skipping an item or mixing scopes. If a weight is unknown, leave the total unresolved until you find a product specification or weigh the item. An incomplete sum should not be treated as proof that the setup is within the stated capacity.
For a monitor on an arm, the checks are related but distinct. The monitor and arm contribute to the load the desk supports, while the monitor load must also be within the arm’s own rating. If a particular arm specification says “per arm,” apply the limit to each arm individually rather than combining two arms into one larger allowance. The full desk’s stated capacity does not answer whether a particular monitor-and-arm combination is suitable.
Example: compare the desk rating and the arm rating separately
CORSAIR lists its Platform:6 Elevate Desk – Black at 330 lb / 150 kg and lists its monitor arms at 18 lb / 8 kg per arm. These are specifications for that named product and its arms, not universal ratings for desks or monitor arms. The figures are published on the Platform:6 Elevate Desk – Black product page; the page does not state a publication year.
For a setup using this product, compare the total load with the desk’s stated 330 lb / 150 kg capacity, applying the product page’s definition of what that capacity includes. Then check each arm: the relevant monitor load must also be assessed against the listed 18 lb / 8 kg per-arm limit. Passing the desk-capacity comparison does not by itself show that a monitor arm is within its own limit. If the desk page or manual does not make clear whether the desktop is included, get clarification instead of treating the headline number as self-explanatory.

The figures illustrate why one headline maximum cannot answer every load question. The desk rating applies to the desk under the definition given for that product; the per-arm figure applies to a separate component and is stated for each arm. You would still need the weights of the actual top, monitors, computer, and other supported items, along with the relevant documentation, to assess a real setup. The CORSAIR figures should not be copied to a different desk or arm, even if another product looks similar.
How to compare capacity specifications when choosing a desk
When comparing candidate desks, use specifications that describe the same thing. A larger number is not automatically a like-for-like advantage if one figure covers a complete desk and another applies to a frame or uses a different definition. Check these points for every model:
- Maximum supported load: Note the stated figure and its unit. Do not transfer it to another model from the same brand or product family.
- Desktop treatment: Confirm whether the capacity includes the worksurface or refers to a different load scope.
- Product configuration: Distinguish a complete desk from a frame intended for a separately supplied top and from other sit-stand workstations.
- Component limits: Look for separate ratings for monitor arms or other mounted accessories. Record whether a limit is per component, as in a per-arm rating.
- Documentation match: Use the current official page or manual for the exact model and configuration you plan to buy or already own.
Ergotron’s buyer’s guide lists multiple capacities across products, including figures in its search listing of 65 lb / 29.5 kg, 88 lb / 40 kg, and 150 lb / 68.2 kg. The category listing does not provide a sufficiently clear model-to-value mapping for those numbers to serve as recommendations for an individual desk. Open the exact product specification rather than choosing among figures copied out of a category page. Vari likewise directs readers to the relevant product page for the desk’s weight limit and says to include monitors and accessories in the calculation; see its Frequently Asked Questions.

Then compare the same categories across products. If one page gives a rating for the desk alone and another gives a figure that includes the worksurface, those numbers do not describe the same load. Clarify the definitions before treating one model as having more usable capacity.
Capacity is one specification to verify, not a reason to assume that a desk is suitable for every possible arrangement. The practical question is whether your actual items and configuration fit within that model’s published limit and within any separate component limits. If you are considering an electric standing desk frame, confirm whether the listing is for a frame only or a complete desk, then check the current official specification for that exact frame and the top you plan to use.
What to do when weights or rating details are missing
If an item’s weight is missing
Check the item’s manufacturer documentation or product label first. If that does not establish the weight, weigh the item or its assembled configuration. Do not substitute a guess simply because the item appears small; the calculation depends on the actual load.

Make sure the figure corresponds to the item as installed. For example, a monitor-and-stand weight may not describe a monitor after its stand has been removed and it is mounted on an arm. Avoid adding a weight that already includes a part separately counted elsewhere. If the included parts are uncertain, use the product documentation or weigh the configuration you are actually using.

If it is unclear whether the desktop counts
Return to the exact model’s product page and manual. Look for language defining the rated load, including whether it includes a customer-provided worksurface. If the documents do not resolve the question, contact the manufacturer with the model number and configuration. Until clarified, a calculation that omits the top may understate the load if the rating includes it.
When contacting the manufacturer, provide the exact model and explain whether you have a complete desk or a frame with a separately selected top. Ask what the stated maximum includes and how to compare your equipment total with that figure. A specific question about the product’s definition is more useful than relying on a generic capacity label without context.
If the desk total is close to the stated maximum
Do not invent a universal percentage of capacity to leave unused. The manufacturer materials cited here do not establish a general headroom percentage. Ask the manufacturer how its rating applies to your exact setup, and follow the product manual. This is especially important when the product documentation’s load definition or configuration does not match your setup.
Do not interpret the absence of a stated buffer as permission to exceed the published limit. Compare your total with the published maximum as defined for that product. If the total is near the number, if an item’s weight is uncertain, or if the scope is unclear, resolve those uncertainties with the manufacturer rather than applying a percentage taken from unrelated advice.
If an accessory appears to be the limiting part
Use that accessory’s own specification. A desk’s maximum does not replace the separate rating for a monitor arm or another mounted component. If the component’s capacity or the load it must carry is uncertain, verify both with the relevant manufacturer before relying on the setup.

Common calculation mistakes
- Using a rating from a similar desk: Capacities are model-specific. Verify the exact model and configuration.
- Forgetting the worksurface: Whether it counts depends on the desk’s stated rating definition; check rather than assume.
- Counting only the computer: Monitors, stands or arms, docks, and other supported accessories belong in the inventory.
- Mixing pounds and kilograms: Convert all component weights to one unit before adding them.
- Double-counting a component: Check what a listed item weight includes, especially when a monitor stand is replaced by an arm or an assembly has several parts.
- Assuming the desk rating covers an arm: Check the arm’s own limit as well as the desk’s capacity.
- Applying a per-arm limit to the pair: If the specification is per arm, assess each arm and the monitor it carries separately.
- Treating an unexplained percentage as a universal safety rule: No universal unused-capacity percentage is established by the manufacturer information cited here. Use the exact product documentation or ask the manufacturer instead.
- Using a category-page number without confirming the model: A range of figures across a product guide does not show which one applies to your desk. Match the number to its exact product page or manual.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate how much weight is on my standing desk?
Identify the exact desk model and check what its rating includes. Add the weights of the desktop if required, plus the monitors, computer, stands or arms, and other equipment and accessories the desk supports. Use one unit throughout, then compare the sum with that model’s published rating. Check any mounted component’s own limit separately.
Does a standing desk’s weight capacity include the desktop?
It depends on the exact model and how its manufacturer defines the rating. Some product listings specify whether a customer-provided worksurface is included. Check the model’s official page or manual; if the definition is unclear, contact the manufacturer rather than assuming the top is excluded.
Do monitors and monitor arms count toward the desk’s weight limit?
Yes. Include the monitors and the equipment or accessories supported by the desk, including a mounted arm. Then check the arm’s own rating separately. A desk capacity does not establish that an arm can carry a particular monitor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs there a universal percentage of a standing desk’s capacity I should leave unused?
The manufacturer materials cited here do not establish a universal headroom percentage. Follow the exact model’s documentation, and ask its manufacturer if your total approaches the stated limit or the rating’s scope is unclear.
What should I do if I can’t find the weight of an item?
Check its label or manufacturer documentation. If those do not give the weight, weigh the item or its assembled configuration rather than estimating. Confirm that the figure covers the parts actually in your setup and does not duplicate a component counted separately.
Can I use a capacity listed for another standing desk from the same brand?
No. Capacity is model-specific, and different products may have different ratings or definitions. Match the specification to the exact desk or frame and configuration you own or plan to buy.
The Bottom Line
There is no single standing-desk capacity that applies to every model. Find the exact desk’s current official rating, confirm whether it includes the desktop, and total the weight of the supported top, equipment, and accessories in one unit. Then check mounted components—especially monitor arms—against their own limits. If the rating’s scope is unclear or your total is close to the stated maximum, ask the manufacturer about that exact model rather than guessing or applying a universal buffer.
