How Much Usable Storage Do You Get From a 20TB Hard Drive?

A 20TB drive contains 20 trillion bytes, or about 18.19 TiB. The familiar 18.2 TB reading is usually a unit-label difference; formatting and partitioning can affect available space.

A 20TB hard drive holds 20,000,000,000,000 bytes. That works out to about 18.19 tebibytes (TiB), so a Windows display near 18.2 TB is usually the expected conversion—not missing capacity. The free space shown after formatting can be slightly lower and depends on the drive’s setup.

Why does a 20TB drive show about 18.2 TB?

Drive makers use decimal units: 1TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Computers also use binary units, where 1TiB is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. Divide the drive’s 20,000,000,000,000 bytes by the binary-unit size and the result is about 18.19TiB. Seagate’s capacity table rounds the same conversion to 18.18 binary TB. Seagate explains the difference between the capacity on a drive label and the reported capacity.

The bytes have not disappeared: the displayed number is smaller because a TiB is larger than a decimal TB. Some operating systems, including Windows, may label a binary-unit value as “TB,” even though TiB is the more precise name.

How much space is actually free after formatting?

About 18.19TiB is the unit-conversion baseline, not a guaranteed free-space reading. Formatting creates filesystem structures, so a formatted volume can show slightly less available space. The exact amount depends on the filesystem and configuration; there is no universal post-format figure for every 20TB drive. Seagate’s explanation covers the capacity-label difference, while Microsoft’s Windows guidance for disks larger than 2TB explains the partitioning considerations.

Western Digital 20TB WD Red Pro NAS Internal Hard Drive HDD - 7200 RPM, SATA 6 Gb/s, CMR, 512 MB Cache, 3.5" - WD202KFGX
  • (1) 1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.
  • For RAID-optimized NAS systems with unlimited number of bays
  • Rated for 550TB/yr workload rate(2) | (2) Annualized Workload Rate = TB transferred x (8760 / recorded power-on hours). The maximum rated workload is specified for operating at typical temperature of 40C. Workload Rate will vary depending on your hardware and software components and configurations.
  • Designed to handle the demands of high-intensity 24x7 multi-user NAS environments
  • Western Digital partners with a wide range of NAS system vendors for extensive testing to ensure compatibility with most NAS enclosures

What if the computer shows much less than 18.2?

A reading near 18.2 in Windows is generally consistent with the unit conversion. If substantially less capacity is available, check the partition style and system compatibility before assuming the drive is defective.

Check whether the disk uses GPT

For Windows to address the full capacity of a disk larger than 2TB, Microsoft says the disk must use the GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioning scheme. With MBR and 512-byte sectors, the addressable capacity is limited to about 2.2TB. A 20TB drive using MBR can therefore appear dramatically smaller than expected. See Microsoft’s large-disk support documentation.

Changing a disk’s partitioning scheme can affect its existing data. Back up important files and understand the conversion or reinitialization steps for your Windows version before changing it.

Keep boot-drive requirements separate

Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes data disks from disks used to start Windows: a Windows system intended to boot from a GPT disk needs UEFI. Requirements for a data disk differ. Operating-system version, storage controller, and drivers can also affect support, so check compatibility for the specific computer rather than assuming every setup behaves alike.

Quick estimate

To convert the advertised capacity to tebibytes, divide by the number of bytes in a TiB:

20,000,000,000,000 bytes ÷ 1,099,511,627,776 bytes/TiB ≈ 18.19 TiB

Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC580 WUH722424ALE604 0F62798 24TB 7.2K RPM SATA 6Gb/s 512e 3.5in Enterprise Hard Drive (Renewed)
  • Store vast amounts of data with a class-leading 24TB capacity, perfect for hyperscale environments, data centers, and big data applications.
  • 7200 RPM, SATA 6Gb/s interface, and large 512MB cache, delivering fast, predictable performance for demanding server workloads.
  • Designed for 24/7 operation with a high 2.5 million hours MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) rating, ensuring enterprise-class durability and data dependability.
  • Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR): Employs proven CMR technology for consistent and reliable performance across various workloads.
  • Engineered for massive scale-out (MSO), high-density data centers, and cloud storage applications.

The roughly 1.81 difference between the advertised 20TB and the 18.19TiB figure is a unit conversion, not storage lost. Any additional difference in the volume’s free-space reading comes from formatting and the particular setup.
