How Much Upload Speed Does PRISM Live Studio Need for a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

For 1080p30 H.264, plan for roughly 17 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity; for 1080p60, about 21 Mbps. The right target depends on codec and output profile.

For a 24/7 YouTube stream made with PRISM Live Studio, upload speed depends on the stream’s resolution, frame rate and codec—not on the fact that it runs all day. Using YouTube’s recommended settings and its 20% upload-bandwidth reserve, plan for about 17 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity for 1080p30 H.264 or 21 Mbps for 1080p60 H.264. These are practical targets for the stream, not a guarantee that an internet plan advertised at the same speed will deliver it consistently.

Upload-speed targets by resolution, frame rate and codec

YouTube’s recommended video bitrate is the starting point. YouTube also advises leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused as room for fluctuations. The targets below multiply each recommended video bitrate by 1.2 and round up where useful; audio and other concurrent uploads also use bandwidth.

Output profile Codec YouTube recommended video bitrate Upload capacity with 20% headroom
1080p30 AV1 or H.265 10 Mbps 12 Mbps
1080p30 H.264 14 Mbps 16.8 Mbps (plan for about 17 Mbps)
1080p60 AV1 or H.265 12 Mbps 14.4 Mbps (plan for about 15 Mbps)
1080p60 H.264 17 Mbps 20.4 Mbps (plan for about 21 Mbps)
720p30 AV1 or H.265 6 Mbps 7.2 Mbps (plan for about 8 Mbps)
720p30 H.264 8 Mbps 9.6 Mbps (plan for about 10 Mbps)
720p60 AV1 or H.265 6 Mbps 7.2 Mbps (plan for about 8 Mbps)
720p60 H.264 8 Mbps 9.6 Mbps (plan for about 10 Mbps)

These are YouTube’s recommended live-ingestion bitrates and calculated upload targets, not PRISM-specific minimum requirements. YouTube’s guidance says to leave room for upload variation and to test your upload bitrate (YouTube encoder settings and bitrates; YouTube streaming tips). If you run parallel streams, add their bitrates together before applying the headroom; the combined demand must fit within the connection’s available upload capacity.

What the target means for a 24/7 stream

Duration does not by itself call for a higher bitrate. A stream’s upload demand is determined by its output profile and any simultaneous uploads or streams. The challenge of running it continuously is maintaining that capacity and a stable connection over time.

  • Measure under realistic conditions: run an upload speed test while other household or workplace devices are active. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate; a single favorable result does not establish that capacity will remain available all day.
  • Leave headroom: do not plan to consume the entire measured upload capacity with the stream. Other users, cloud backups and fluctuations can push a connection over its limit.
  • Check stream health: monitor YouTube’s live control room for warnings or dropped frames after the stream starts, and adjust the output profile if the connection cannot sustain it.
  • Distinguish plan speed from available speed: a plan’s advertised upload rate is not proof that the streaming computer will continuously receive that much capacity.

Set PRISM Desktop’s output to match your connection

PRISM Desktop exposes bitrate settings under Settings > Output when Output Mode is set to Advanced. Resolution and frame rate are under Settings > Video. YouTube recommends CBR encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds; YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as its live encoder protocols and supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 (YouTube’s encoder settings).

  1. Choose an output profile: in PRISM, open Settings > Video and select the resolution and FPS you actually need. Use the table above to identify the corresponding YouTube bitrate for the codec you will send.
  2. Set the bitrate: open Settings > Output, set Output Mode: Advanced, and configure the encoder bitrate to match YouTube’s recommendation for that profile. Keep the 20% reserve available for other traffic and variation; the reserve is not extra bitrate to add to the encoder setting.
  3. Use the recommended encoding behavior: configure CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where those options are available in your selected PRISM encoder. Keep the interval at four seconds or less.
  4. Test before committing to a continuous run: start a private or unlisted test broadcast, then check YouTube stream health and PRISM for network or encoding issues. A test helps reveal whether the connection and computer can sustain the chosen output.
  5. Reduce demand if it struggles: lower resolution, bitrate or FPS in PRISM if network bandwidth or PC performance is strained. PRISM recommends a hardware NVIDIA or AMD encoder when a dedicated graphics card is available (PRISM Desktop streaming settings).

Improve connection stability

PRISM lists insufficient upload speed, an unstable local network and weak Wi-Fi among possible causes of disconnections. Its recommendation is to use wired LAN for more consistent transmission (PRISM disconnection guidance).

  • Connect the streaming computer to the router with Ethernet if Wi-Fi is weak or variable.
  • Pause or schedule other uploads, such as cloud backups, while the stream is running.
  • If wired service still cannot sustain the required upload capacity, lower the stream profile or address the internet connection; Ethernet improves the local link but does not increase the upload capacity provided by your internet service.

PRISM’s mobile guidance gives different figures—4 Mbps for 720p and 6 Mbps for 1080p—and discusses adaptive bitrate. Those are mobile recommendations, not substitutes for YouTube’s desktop encoder bitrate guidance (PRISM mobile streaming guide). PRISM also publishes mobile-specific stability ranges and advises having at least twice the listed network bandwidth; those figures should not be treated as a universal desktop threshold (PRISM mobile stability guide).

A 24/7 broadcast is not necessarily a complete 24-hour archive

Bandwidth determines whether the live feed can be ingested; it does not guarantee that YouTube will preserve the entire broadcast as a replay. YouTube says a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends recording a local archive as a backup (YouTube archive live streams guidance). If retaining a complete recording matters, plan a local recording and storage workflow separately from the upload-speed calculation.
