How Much Upload Speed Does Astra Streaming Need for a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

YouTube’s encoder bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate and codec—not broadcast duration. Learn how its recommendations relate to sustained upload speed and testing.

There is no published Astra-specific upload-speed requirement for a 24/7 YouTube stream. If by “Astra Streaming” you mean an app that sends video to YouTube, use YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrate for your resolution, frame rate and codec as your starting point, then test the connection that will carry the stream. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. Those figures describe the video encoder’s bitrate; they are not guaranteed minimum internet-plan speeds.

Start with the encoder bitrate, not the 24/7 duration

YouTube’s published live-encoder guidance does not set a different bitrate simply because a broadcast runs continuously. The target depends on the stream format. YouTube recommends choosing quality based on the available connection, running a speed test to check upload bitrate, and testing the stream before going live. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance and its recommended encoder settings.

A recommended encoder bitrate is the rate at which the encoder sends the video data. Your internet connection must be able to carry that outgoing stream reliably. An advertised upload speed equal to the encoder target does not guarantee a stable broadcast: a speed test is a snapshot, while a 24/7 stream depends on the connection available to the streaming device over time. YouTube does not publish one universal extra-headroom multiplier for this use case.

YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations

The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 encoder bitrates, not minimum internet-plan speeds. YouTube also lists separate ranges and limits for AV1 and H.265 (HEVC); check its current table for the codec and format you actually use.

How to check whether your connection can sustain the stream

  1. Choose the format you will actually send. Note the resolution, frame rate and codec in your encoder or streaming app. Match the codec-specific bitrate recommendation in YouTube’s settings table; the H.264 examples above do not automatically apply to AV1 or H.265.
  2. Test the upload connection used by the streaming device. Run a speed test on the same network and device that will send the stream. YouTube specifically recommends a speed test to test upload bitrate. A result from another location or device may not represent the connection carrying the broadcast.
  3. Run a representative pre-stream test. Send the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio and representative movement before relying on a long broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the stream; see its encoder guidance.
  4. Check stream health while it runs. Watch for YouTube health warnings, including low bitrate or keyframe-interval problems. Its Live Streaming API health diagnostics identify both as issues to address; they do not define a separate 24/7 speed threshold.

Encoder settings that matter to stream health

YouTube’s guidance supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1. It supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds between keyframes. Use the settings that match your chosen codec and stream format, then validate them with a pre-stream test and YouTube’s stream-health messages. These settings help configure the outgoing stream; they do not turn the encoder bitrate into a guaranteed internet-speed requirement.

What “Astra Streaming” could mean

The name is ambiguous. Astra Streaming Studio’s Google Play listing describes an Android live-video app and lists RTMP/RTMPS support, but does not publish a YouTube bitrate table or a 24/7 upload-speed requirement. DataStax Astra Streaming documentation describes a managed Apache Pulsar-compatible data-streaming platform, a different kind of service. Neither source establishes a separate upload-speed figure for a 24/7 YouTube video broadcast. If you mean a specific Astra product, its exact identity may change which app settings to consult; the YouTube bitrate guidance above remains the relevant starting point for the stream sent to YouTube.
