A 24/7 YouTube radio station needs an upload connection that can reliably sustain its encoder’s bitrate for as long as the stream is live, with spare capacity for normal network variation and other uploads. The schedule itself does not multiply the speed requirement: the key is the stream’s codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations start at 8 Mbps for 720p, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are encoder bitrates, not guaranteed ISP plan speeds.
Start with the stream bitrate, not the 24/7 schedule
A live encoder continuously sends data at its configured bitrate. Running for 24 hours means sustaining that upload for 24 hours; it does not mean multiplying the instantaneous speed requirement by 24. Set the output format and bitrate first, then check whether the internet connection can maintain that upload reliably.

These figures come from YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance. They are recommended encoder bitrates, not a statement that an internet plan with the same advertised upload speed will be sufficient. The connection needs to deliver the stream’s outgoing data consistently, and real-world performance can fluctuate.

What a radio stream with a static image needs
YouTube’s cited settings table does not give a separate bitrate requirement for a radio broadcast that uses audio and a static image. Do not treat the general video recommendations above as a custom requirement for that setup. Your actual encoder settings determine the upload load, and the appropriate value depends on how the stream is configured.
If you choose the general H.264 recommendation for a 720p output, use 8 Mbps as the video encoder bitrate reference. For 1080p, the reference is 14 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps. Those are useful planning points, not a guarantee that every static-image radio setup should use those exact values.

How to check whether your upload can sustain the stream
- Choose the encoder output. Decide on resolution, frame rate and codec, then set the encoder bitrate. For H.264 video, YouTube’s recommendations are 8 Mbps for 720p30/60, 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60.
- Measure upload performance. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Check the actual upload available where the encoder will run; do not rely only on the speed printed on an internet plan.
- Leave spare capacity. The measured upload should exceed the stream’s bitrate so ordinary variation and other household or studio uploads do not use all the available capacity. YouTube does not specify a universal safety multiplier, so there is no official rule that the connection must be exactly twice the stream bitrate.
- Test the complete setup before going live. YouTube recommends testing before starting, including audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Check the platform’s stream-health feedback and messages while testing and during the broadcast.
- Keep other upload traffic in mind. File backups, video uploads and other devices sharing the connection can reduce the headroom available to the encoder. Test under conditions that resemble the station’s normal operating hours.
