Your target depends on the stream’s resolution, frame rate and video codec. For example, YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60; with YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom, those work out to roughly 6.25 Mbps and 21.25 Mbps of available upload capacity, respectively. These are practical calculations—not official minimum internet-plan speeds.
Start with the stream bitrate, not your internet plan’s headline speed
Upload speed is the outbound capacity available to send your live video to YouTube. A download-speed result does not tell you whether the connection can reliably carry a stream. YouTube’s recommended video bitrate varies with resolution, frame rate and the codec sent by your encoder.
The following values are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings table, checked on October 3, 2026. They are video bitrate recommendations in Mbps, not guaranteed stable upload speeds or internet-plan thresholds. Choose the column for the codec your encoder will actually send.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 / H.265 minimum | AV1 / H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4K / 2160p, 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 4K / 2160p, 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, the H.264 recommended bitrate is 8 Mbps at 720p60 and 8 Mbps at 720p30 in YouTube’s table, while 1080p30 is 14 Mbps. Do not assume that increasing frame rate always raises the recommendation: use the precise row for your settings. The table is for live-stream encoding, not YouTube’s separate video-upload encoding guidance. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How much headroom should you leave?
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving about 20% bandwidth room beyond the stream bitrate. This is a practical buffer, not another encoder bitrate setting and not a guarantee against fluctuations or outages. To apply it, multiply the chosen video bitrate by 1.25. The resulting figures below are arithmetic using YouTube’s recommendation; they are not separately published speed requirements.
| Example stream setting | YouTube recommended video bitrate | Approximate upload capacity with 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 17.5 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 21.25 Mbps |
| H.264, 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264, 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
The commonly quoted 6.25 Mbps figure for H.264 1080p30 would apply only if using a 5 Mbps video bitrate. YouTube’s table lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for that row and 14 Mbps as its recommended bitrate; for a target based on the recommendation, include headroom on 14 Mbps instead. Your connection also carries audio and other network traffic, so a measured result that barely clears the video figure leaves little room for variation.

Does streaming from India change the bitrate requirement?
YouTube’s encoder table does not publish a separate India bitrate schedule. The technical recommendation is based on codec, resolution and frame rate, not country. India matters in the practical choice and testing of the local connection: the upload capacity available at your location and at your streaming time is what counts. An advertised maximum upload speed alone cannot establish that capacity or its consistency.
No particular Indian provider or plan can be recommended from these figures alone. Compare measured upload performance and consistency from the place and time you intend to stream rather than relying only on a plan’s advertised speed.

How to check whether your connection is ready
- Choose your output settings. Decide on a realistic resolution and frame rate for your content and encoder before selecting a target bitrate.
- Identify the encoder’s video codec. Find the matching codec column in the table above, then use the recommended bitrate for your resolution and frame rate.
- Test from the actual streaming location. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test your upload bitrate. Test the connection and route you will use for the event, not a different network or room. YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance explains testing and stream-health monitoring.
- Allow for other network use. Leave about 20% capacity beyond the stream bitrate, and account for people and devices sharing the connection. YouTube describes this as recommended room, not a guarantee. YouTube’s streaming tips provide the headroom guidance.
- Rehearse under realistic conditions. Test with similar audio and the kind of motion your stream will contain. During the live stream, check YouTube’s stream health and messages.
- Use Ethernet for a computer stream when practical. YouTube recommends Ethernet. A wired connection can avoid some local wireless variability, but it cannot fix ISP congestion or insufficient upstream capacity. YouTube’s filming tips cover the connection recommendation.
What to do if the stream drops frames or shows poor health
- The measured upload is below the target: reduce the stream resolution or choose a lower bitrate, then test again using the matching row. YouTube’s live-streaming error guidance recommends lowering resolution when available bandwidth is insufficient. See YouTube’s live-streaming error messages.
- The speed test looks adequate but stream health is unstable: retest at the time of day you will go live, check whether other devices are using upload capacity, and confirm that the encoder is using the intended codec, frame rate and bitrate.
- Wi-Fi performance varies: if streaming from a computer, try Ethernet and repeat the test from the same location.
- You are comparing plan speeds: distinguish advertised maximum upload speed from the capacity consistently available to your streaming setup. The latter is what must carry the chosen stream bitrate plus headroom.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than broadcast a live camera or computer session, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
Every slot supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps as made, at one flat price per slot with no re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded-video streams to YouTube, not camera broadcasting.
