Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThere is no single upload-speed figure that guarantees smooth Steam Remote Play. For an internet session, the host PC sends the game’s video and audio, so its available upload capacity needs to support the stream’s bitrate; the remote device needs enough download capacity to receive it. Steam’s practical advice is to tune bandwidth during a session, starting at 3 Mbit/s and adjusting for stability—not to treat that starting point as a broadband minimum.
Which connection needs upload speed?
In Remote Play, the gaming PC captures and streams video and audio to the other device. That means the host’s outgoing connection carries the main stream, while the remote device’s download connection receives it. Input and voice travel back toward the host, but they are not the main video stream. Steam describes this traffic flow on its Remote Play page.

For play over the internet, check the upload capacity where the host PC is connected and the download capacity at the remote location. The stream bitrate is the amount of outgoing stream traffic being sent; an internet plan’s advertised upload speed is the connection’s capacity, not the bitrate itself. Leave some capacity for other household activity as a practical precaution, but Steam does not specify a required amount of extra headroom.

No universal upload minimum or official upload-speed table for 1080p, 1440p, or 4K is given in the Steam guidance covered here. Actual needs depend on the session and the settings you use, so a single number cannot guarantee a particular resolution, frame rate, or stutter-free result.

How to find a workable bandwidth setting
- Start at 3 Mbit/s. Steam Support suggests this as a starting point for in-session bandwidth tuning. It is not a minimum ISP upload speed or a recommended broadband plan.
- Increase the bandwidth limit gradually while playing. Watch for hitches as you raise it; the appropriate setting depends on the game and the connection in that session.
- If hitches begin, reduce the limit. Back down to a setting that gives you a stable stream rather than assuming the highest available bitrate is always best.
- Adjust quality or maximum capture resolution if needed. Lowering these settings can help if the connection cannot sustain the stream you want.
What to check if Remote Play stutters
- Prefer Ethernet for the host. Steam Support says it highly recommends connecting the computer directly to the router with Ethernet. This can avoid wireless interference on the host’s local-network link.
- Check the performance overlay. Steam advises using its performance overlay to inspect network time. Spikes or variability that coincide with stutter or freezing can point to an unstable network path, even when a speed test reports a high headline rate.
- Separate Wi-Fi and broadband issues. Within a home, the stream may travel over the local network; an ISP upload figure alone does not account for Wi-Fi interference, router behavior, or the path between host and client.
- Lower the bandwidth limit or stream quality. If the stream hitches, reduce the configured bandwidth or quality and assess the result during the same kind of play session.
