YouTube also recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, so aim for about 20.4 Mbps of reliably available upload capacity for H.264 or 14.4 Mbps for AV1/H.265. These are practical targets, not guarantees of an uninterrupted stream.
Recommended upload speed for 1080p60
The right target depends on the video codec your encoder uses. The bitrate is the amount of data the encoder sends for the stream; the upload target includes extra capacity beyond that bitrate. YouTube’s current guidance lists these 1080p60 settings:

The minimum and recommended bitrates come from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. The upload targets are arithmetic based on YouTube’s separate recommendation to leave 20% bandwidth headroom; they are not official minimum speeds or a stability guarantee. If other devices or applications upload data on the same connection, allow for that traffic in addition.

A broadband plan’s advertised speed or a speed test’s download result does not establish whether the stream has enough capacity. Check the test’s upload result, then compare it with the target for your encoder’s codec. YouTube notes that download speed is often higher than upload speed and that other people sharing the network can reduce the capacity available to the streaming computer. - Run a speed test under conditions similar to the planned broadcast, including the same network and typical household or workplace use.
- Make sure the upload capacity available to the streaming computer is above the relevant target, not merely equal to the encoder bitrate.
- Account for simultaneous uploads, including any primary and backup streams.
Set the encoder for YouTube
Once you know your codec and available upload capacity, configure the encoder to match YouTube’s guidance. For 1080p60, use the recommended bitrate for the selected codec rather than treating YouTube’s lower minimum as the ideal target.
- H.264: recommended 17 Mbps; minimum 6 Mbps.
- AV1 or H.265 (HEVC): recommended 12 Mbps; minimum 4 Mbps.
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS.
These encoder settings are from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. Confirm that your encoder and YouTube setup support the codec you select.

Test the connection and watch stream health
A speed test is a measurement at one point in time. It cannot ensure that the connection will remain uninterrupted throughout a live broadcast; YouTube notes that connectivity disruptions can break a stream. Test the complete setup before going live, including audio and motion similar to what you expect to broadcast. During the event, monitor stream health and respond to warnings.
If Wi-Fi is unstable
Trying a wired Ethernet connection may help address instability on the local Wi-Fi link. It cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet provider. YouTube’s guidance covers bandwidth and reliability generally; it does not endorse a particular cable or guarantee that switching connections will solve every problem. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Common upload-speed problems and fixes
- The speed test shows fast downloads but low uploads: use the upload result to assess streaming capacity. If it is below the target, reduce competing uploads or look at a connection with more upload capacity.
- The measured upload is close to the target but the stream warns or drops: the test does not guarantee ongoing capacity. Repeat the test under realistic network load, leave the recommended headroom, and monitor stream health.
- The encoder bitrate exceeds available upload bandwidth: bring the bitrate within the capacity available to the streaming computer, while recognizing that YouTube’s minimum settings are below its recommended settings.
- Other people or devices are using the connection: their traffic can reduce the capacity left for your broadcast. Include simultaneous uploads in your capacity estimate.
- Wi-Fi is unreliable: test a wired connection as a local troubleshooting step. If the ISP’s upload capacity itself is insufficient, changing the local connection will not raise it.
