What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a typical desktop CPU with an integrated heat spreader, start with a small dot of thermal paste in the center—roughly the size of a grain of rice or a pea, as Intel advises. Mount the cooler evenly to spread it, unless the paste or cooler maker specifies another method. If paste is already pre-applied to the cooler, do not add more.
How much thermal paste should you use?
A small center dot is a practical starting point for a conventional desktop CPU. The right amount is not an exact measured volume: CPU heat spreader size and shape, paste type, and manufacturer directions can affect the recommended application. Intel describes the amount as roughly a grain of rice or a pea.

Too little paste may not cover enough of the contact area. Excess paste can spill beyond the CPU and interfere with good contact. Follow the instructions for your specific paste and cooler rather than assuming one pattern works for every setup.
How to apply thermal paste
- Check the cooler and paste instructions. Confirm whether paste is already applied to the cooler; if it is, do not add another layer.
- If reusing the CPU or cooler, remove the old paste from both contact surfaces. Use an appropriate lint-free or anti-static wipe; if you use alcohol, let it evaporate before applying new paste. Intel advises replacing used TIM rather than putting fresh paste on top of it.
- For a typical desktop CPU, place a small amount at the center of the heat spreader unless the product instructions call for a different application.
- Mount the cooler evenly and securely according to its instructions. Where the instructions allow, let mounting pressure spread the paste, and avoid shifting the cooler after it makes contact.
- For an unusually large heat spreader or paste with specific application guidance, use the manufacturer’s diagram or manual.
Do you need to spread the paste by hand?
Not always. Intel recommends allowing the cooler or water block’s mounting pressure to spread a center dot. Noctua says NT-H1 and NT-H2 generally do not need manual spreading. ARCTIC allows center placement, pre-spreading, or a pattern, with a thin film covering the processor surface as the goal. Use the directions for your particular paste and CPU.
#1 Best Overall
- CONSISTENT QUALITY: Our thermal paste packaging design has evolved over time, but the formula has remained the same, ensuring reliable performance.
- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste is made of carbon microparticles, guaranteeing extremely high thermal conductivity. This ensures that heat from the CPU/GPU is dissipated quickly & efficiently
- SAFE APPLICATION: The MX-4 is metal-free and non-electrical conductive which eliminates any risks of causing short circuit, adding more protection to the CPU and VGA cards
- HIGH DURABILITY: In contrast to metal and silicon thermal compound, the MX-4 does not compromise over time. Once applied, you do not need to apply it again as it will last at least for 8 years
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners
When the amount or pattern differs
Compare the CPU heat spreader’s size and shape with the paste manufacturer’s instructions. Some products provide recommendations for different CPU sizes or show a particular pattern. The sources reviewed do not establish one universally best pattern for every CPU and paste.
This guidance is for conventional paste between a desktop CPU heat spreader and cooler. Do not assume the same amount or method applies to a bare-die or laptop repair, or to liquid metal; use model- and product-specific guidance for those cases.

FAQ
Is a pea-sized dot of thermal paste enough?
For a typical desktop CPU with an integrated heat spreader, a small center dot roughly the size of a pea or grain of rice is Intel’s general starting point. Check your paste and cooler instructions in case they call for a different method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I add paste if it is already on the cooler?
No. If the cooler has paste pre-applied, Intel says extra paste is unnecessary.

- SAFETY APPLICATION: BSFF is metal-free and non-conductive, which eliminates any risk of short circuit and adds more protection to the CPU and VGA card.
- BETTER THAN LIQUID METAL: It is made of carbon microparticles, guaranteeing extremely high thermal conductivity. This ensures that heat from the CPU/GPU is dissipated quickly & efficiently.
- HIGH DURABILITY: BSFF thermal paste Edition formula has excellent component heat dissipation performance and has the stability to push the system to the limit.
- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: In contrast to metal and silicon thermal conductive adhesives, BSFF thermal paste will not compromise over time. After applying, you do not need to apply again because it will last at least 5 years.
- EASY TO APPLY: BSFF thermal paste has ideal consistency and is very easy to use even for beginners
Do I need to replace thermal paste when I remove the cooler?
Clean the old paste from both contact surfaces before reinstalling the cooler, then apply fresh paste according to its instructions. Do not put new paste on top of used TIM.
Can I use the same amount for every CPU?
No universal amount or pattern is established for every CPU and paste. Consider the heat spreader size and shape and follow the relevant product guidance.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- NEXT-LEVEL THERMAL PERFORMANCE: MX-7 features a performance-optimized, dense, and highly viscous consistency. Its high filler content ensures exceptional heat transfer
- LONG-TERM STABILITY: High cohesion prevents pump-out, dry-out, or bleeding even under repeated thermal cycles, ensuring long-lasting and consistent performance without the need for frequent reapplication
- PERFECT APPLICATION: MX-7 cannot be spread manually by design. Its low adhesion allows the paste to distribute naturally under cooler pressure, forming a thin bond line without trapping air bubbles
