Choose tablet storage based on what you plan to keep on the device: apps and games, offline video, photos, documents, and creative projects. There is no reliable universal gigabyte threshold for a “light” or “heavy” tablet user. Some Samsung Galaxy tablets accept microSD cards; iPads can connect external storage on supported configurations, but that does not increase their built-in capacity.
How much storage should you choose?
Start with your actual workload, not just the number printed on the box. Count the apps and games you expect to keep, files you need offline, and any photos, video, or project files you plan to store locally. Leave room for the operating system and future content. If you need a precise estimate, check storage use on your current device and the size of the files you expect to move.

These are practical guidelines, not measured capacity standards:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Reading, web, notes, and mostly streamed media: A lower storage tier may work if you keep few large files offline and are comfortable removing content or relying on online storage. Make sure the available space after setup will still cover your apps and files.
- A mix of everyday apps, photos, downloads, and documents: Consider a middle tier if your local collection is growing or you want longer between cleanups.
- Large games, downloaded travel libraries, or drawing and video projects: Favor a larger built-in tier. A compatible microSD card or external drive may help with some files, but do not assume it can hold apps or active projects.
Advertised capacity is not necessarily the space available for your own files. Apple says the available storage on the iPad (A16) can vary with software version, settings, and model. Check the exact device’s available space after setup rather than treating its listed capacity as free space: Apple’s iPad (A16) specifications.

- Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops.
- Increase your TV show, movie, and Full HD video[4] recording collections dramatically with up to a massive 1.5TB[1].
- Transfer files fast with up to 150MB/s[2] read speeds and SanDisk MobileMate USB micro 3.0 microSD card reader[6].

What to check before buying
- Compare the built-in storage tiers and the price difference to the next tier.
- Check the exact model’s physical microSD slot, supported card type, and maximum capacity.
- Decide whether you need extra space for apps and games or mainly for photos, video, music, and documents.
- For external storage, confirm that the tablet supports the drive or reader and whether an adapter or powered hub is required.
- Consider how often you need files available offline, such as while traveling or working in the field.
For context, Apple listed 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB configurations for the iPad (A16), introduced in 2025. Its 13-inch iPad Air (M4), introduced in 2026, has 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB configurations. These are examples for those specific models, not a universal recommendation or a claim about every iPad.
Can you add a memory card to a tablet?
Samsung Galaxy tablets
Some Galaxy tablets have a microSD slot, but compatibility and capacity limits vary by model. Samsung warns that not all its devices support microSD, so check the exact tablet’s specifications before buying a card. Samsung’s guidance recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video because of its higher capacity and read/write capability. Samsung’s microSD guidance also explains that Samsung Android devices do not support Adoptable storage.

As a model-specific example, Samsung says the Galaxy Tab S10 FE and S10 FE+ can store up to 1.5TB using a microSD card, sold separately. That limit applies to those models; it does not establish the limit for other Galaxy tablets. Check Samsung’s S10 FE and S10 FE+ specifications and your exact model’s documentation.

Android’s general instructions describe setting up an SD card as portable or internal storage, but the available choices and behavior depend on the device. Check the tablet maker’s instructions rather than assuming that a setup option described for Android is available on your model. Google’s SD card setup guide explains the general options.

Will a microSD card let you install more apps?
Not necessarily. Card support does not mean every app can be installed or moved to removable storage. Samsung says its Android devices do not support Adoptable storage, and file or app relocation can depend on the tablet model and settings. Treat a card as additional space for compatible files unless the manufacturer and the app confirm that your intended use is supported.

Compatible iPads can connect external storage for accessing or transferring files; this does not add permanent built-in capacity for apps or the operating system. Depending on the iPad and storage device, you may need a Lightning or USB-C reader or adapter. Apple says a powered hub may be needed with Thunderbolt/USB 4 models if an external hard drive does not provide its own power. See Apple’s guide to connecting external storage to iPad.

How to check and free space on an iPad
- Open Settings > General > iPad Storage to review used and available space.
- Remove files or apps you no longer need if storage is tight.
- Consider turning on Offload Unused Apps. Offloading removes an unused app when space is low while keeping its documents and data; you can reinstall the app later.
Apple notes that some iPad apps are larger than their iPhone equivalents, so a phone’s storage use may not predict what you need on a tablet. See Apple’s iPad storage-management instructions.
