1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you only play a playlist on YouTube, you do not need to store a month of playback on your own drive. If you also record a continuous local copy for 30 days, budget about 324 GB (302 GiB) per 1 Mbps of recording bitrate, before overhead. That works out to roughly 2.59 TB at 8 Mbps, 4.54 TB at 14 Mbps, or 13.61 TB at 42 Mbps. Use the bitrate of the local recording—not automatically the stream’s YouTube ingest bitrate.
First, separate YouTube playback from a local recording
A YouTube playlist looping for viewers does not, by itself, mean your computer stores every playback locally. Storage becomes a concern when you record the stream on a local drive. For that case, the size depends primarily on the recording bitrate and how long the recording runs.

The figures below assume a constant bitrate and exactly 30 days (720 hours). A 31-day month requires multiplying the 30-day result by 31/30. Actual files can differ because of variable bitrate, container overhead, file-system formatting, and other files on the drive.
Calculate storage from the local recording bitrate
For a constant-bitrate recording, a useful decimal estimate is:

- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Storage in TB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × hours × 0.00045
For 30 days, that simplifies to:
Storage in TB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 0.324
The calculation uses 1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bits per second, 8 bits per byte, and 30 × 24 × 60 × 60 seconds. At 1 Mbps, the result is 324,000,000,000 bytes: 324 GB decimal, or about 302 GiB. Per hour, 1 Mbps uses about 0.45 GB decimal; multiply that hourly amount by the local recording bitrate.

These are payload estimates, not a drive-size recommendation. Choose more usable capacity than the result to allow for overhead and other content; a drive’s advertised capacity and its available formatted space are not the same thing.

Examples using YouTube’s H.264 ingest recommendations
YouTube’s published H.264 ingest settings can help estimate storage when the local recording bitrate is unknown. The following totals apply the 30-day formula to those recommended rates; they are planning proxies, not measurements of local recording files.

- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
| YouTube H.264 ingest setting | Published recommended bitrate | 30-day payload estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 2.59 TB |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 4.54 TB |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 5.51 TB |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 6.80 TB |
| 4K/2160p30 | 42 Mbps | 13.61 TB |
Rates depend on codec and settings. For 1080p30, YouTube’s current H.264 minimum/recommended pair is 5/14 Mbps; its AV1/H.265 pair is 4/10 Mbps. Applying the formula to the 5 Mbps H.264 minimum gives about 1.62 TB for 30 days, but that is only a smaller payload estimate, not a guarantee of satisfactory visual quality. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.
Do not rely on a month-long YouTube archive
YouTube says live streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream lasting longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single uninterrupted month-long stream therefore is not a dependable archive. YouTube recommends making a local archive backup; if the recording matters, check that the file is intact and that its size is growing. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and creator tips for live streaming.

- RUGGED PROTECTION: Built to withstand drops, shocks, dust, and rain, keeping your data safe in tough conditions.
- MASSIVE STORAGE: 4TB capacity provides ample space for large files, backups, photos, videos, and more.
- USB-C CONNECTIVITY: Features a USB-C interface for fast, reliable data transfers with modern laptops and desktops.
- BROAD COMPATIBILITY: Works seamlessly with both Mac and PC, making it a versatile storage solution for any user.

Choose storage for the recording you will actually make
Use the actual local recording bitrate if your recording software provides it. The YouTube ingest rate is a substitute for planning only when the local rate is unknown; upload and recording bitrates do not have to match.
Recommended Free Tools
- Capacity: estimate the payload, then allow for overhead, formatting, and other files.
- Write performance: check that the drive can sustain the recording’s actual data rate during continuous use.
- Reliability: consider whether the drive will be used continuously and whether it is the only copy.
- Backup: if the archive matters, do not treat one local drive as an infallible copy.
YouTube’s cited guidance recommends a local archive backup and checking its growth; it does not prescribe a drive type, capacity, or performance rating. A 20% upload-bandwidth margin sometimes mentioned in YouTube streaming guidance concerns network upload capacity, not disk space, so it should not be added to this storage calculation. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel rather than keep a local month-long recording, StreamNeo runs the playlist from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and does not replace a local archive when you need a recording copy.
