For an iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max, available capacities are 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. There is no one best size for everyone: start with the space you use now, then account for the photos, videos, apps and downloads you expect to keep on the phone. If you regularly record ProRes video, allow substantially more headroom or use a compatible external recording setup.
How to choose the right iPhone Pro capacity
- Check your current use. On your iPhone, open Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Review the total used and the apps and categories taking up the most room. Treat this as a starting point, not a prediction of how much you will need throughout your next phone’s ownership.
- Think about what stays on the phone. Consider whether you keep a large photo or video library locally, install storage-heavy apps, or download music, shows, maps and other content for offline use. Those files and app data use device storage.
- Account for how your habits may change. If you expect to shoot more video, keep more downloads, or avoid regularly managing files, allow more room than your current snapshot suggests. Choose a smaller capacity only if you are comfortable managing local content or relying on cloud services where appropriate.
- Decide how you will handle ProRes. ProRes can consume storage quickly. If you record it often and want to save footage internally, choose a capacity with room for those files as well as your other content. For supported workflows, recording directly to an external drive is another option.
Apple’s current specifications list the same four capacities for both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, so storage advice can be based on your use rather than a capacity tier exclusive to one of the two models. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications list 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.

What the iPhone 18 Pro storage options mean
| Capacity | Consider it if… |
|---|---|
| 256GB | Your current use is modest, you do not expect to keep a large library or many offline downloads locally, and you are willing to manage storage as needed. |
| 512GB | You want more room for growing app, photo, video and download collections without choosing one of the largest capacities. |
| 1TB | You keep substantial amounts of content on the phone or regularly create large video files and want more internal headroom. |
| 2TB | You have a particularly large local library or demanding recording needs and want the largest listed internal capacity. |
These are decision guides, not Apple recommendations or guarantees about how much a particular user needs. The best fit depends on your actual use and how much content you plan to keep locally. Prices vary by market; check the cost difference for the configurations where you are buying.
Why ProRes changes the calculation
Apple Support says ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC files. Apple also says at least 10 percent of the iPhone’s storage must be free to record ProRes. That means the nominal capacity is not all available for footage: the phone needs free space for recording as well as room for apps and other content. If ProRes is enabled and less than five minutes of recording time remain, Camera may free storage automatically. Apple’s ProRes recording guidance describes these limits and recording options.

Apple’s current iPhone 18 Pro specifications state that ProRes recording is available up to 4K at 120 frames per second with external recording. An external drive can be useful for that workflow, but it does not increase the iPhone’s built-in capacity. Requirements can differ by model and recording mode; do not assume that every drive or cable is suitable. Apple’s support guidance for the models it covers specifies exFAT formatting and a USB 3 cable rated at 10 Gbit/s; its stated minimum drive speeds are 220 MB/s for 4K60 ProRes and 440 MB/s for 4K120 ProRes. Check the current iPhone 18 Pro-specific requirements before buying accessories or relying on those thresholds for that model.

Device storage is the space built into the iPhone. iCloud storage is cloud space for items such as photos, files, notes and backups; adding cloud storage does not change the phone’s capacity. Apple includes 5GB of free iCloud storage with a new account, which may or may not be enough for your content. Apple explains the difference between device and iCloud storage.

For photos and videos, Apple says originals are stored on the device in full resolution by default. With iCloud Photos and Optimize Storage enabled, full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud and space-saving copies remain on the iPhone when needed, provided you have enough iCloud capacity. This can reduce local photo-library use, but it does not remove the need to consider app data, downloaded media and other files stored on the device. See Apple’s instructions for managing photo storage.

A practical rule for deciding
- If you rarely run short of space and keep a limited amount of media offline, begin by considering 256GB.
- If you routinely manage storage or expect your local library to grow, compare 512GB with the cost of the next capacity in your market.
- If you keep extensive photo and video collections or record large files, consider 1TB or 2TB based on how much you intend to retain internally.
- If ProRes is central to your workflow, weigh internal capacity against the supported option of recording directly to external storage, and verify the requirements for your exact model.
