How Much Storage Do Scheduled Website Screenshots Need?

Calculate storage for scheduled website screenshots using your planned capture count and measured file sizes—not a guessed universal size per image.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no dependable universal storage figure per scheduled website screenshot. Estimate your archive by multiplying the number of files you will keep by the measured size of captures made with your own pages and settings. A service’s screenshot-count limit tells you how many captures it permits—not how many gigabytes they occupy.

Estimate storage with this formula

Base image storage ≈ pages × captures per page per day × retention days × average bytes per capture.

For example, one page captured daily and retained for 90 days produces 90 base image files. Multiply 90 by the average file size you measure. Ninety days is only an example input, not a recommended retention period or a service default.

For a more useful estimate, measure a representative sample from the workflow you plan to keep. Include ordinary pages and unusually long ones; capture full pages if that is what your schedule will store; and use the intended format, quality, viewport, and device settings. Calculate both the mean and a conservative high percentile, then multiply by the planned number of captures. If those settings change, repeat the measurement.

No representative bytes-per-capture benchmark is established for scheduled website screenshots, so a single “typical screenshot size” would not be a reliable planning figure.

What changes the total?

Capture count and variants

More monitored URLs, more frequent schedules, and longer retention all increase the number of files. Separate desktop and mobile captures, multiple geographic captures, or several snapshots per scheduled run multiply the count again. Scheduling frequency and available variants differ by service and plan; check the terms for the setup you intend to use.

Viewport versus full-page capture

A viewport screenshot stores the visible browser area. A full-page screenshot includes content below the fold, so a long page may produce a much larger image. Dimensions also depend on the selected device or viewport. For example, Snapshot Archive documents a 1280×800 desktop viewport and a 375×667 mobile viewport as its own defaults or examples; these are not universal screenshot standards. See Snapshot Archive’s feature documentation.

Format and quality

PNG, JPEG, and WebP are available capture formats in the services described, and some tools expose image quality controls. Actual file size depends on the page’s visual content and the encoding settings. There is no general, dependable conversion ratio to apply across website screenshots: measure the files produced by the settings you will retain.

Retention, exports, and duplicate copies

An item-count quota and a time-based retention policy are different controls. Site-Shot, for example, describes a capacity measured by the number of screenshots held and a “keep newest N” option. Snapshot Archive describes retention periods and export to S3. A downloaded archive, backup, or exported copy adds storage beyond the hosted service’s retained copy. Check each provider’s deletion and export behavior rather than assuming a quota represents a number of days.

How to make a practical capacity estimate

  1. Define what one scheduled run creates. Count each URL, device, location, and additional snapshot that will result in a separate file.
  2. Choose the retention window. Decide how long you need the captures for a visual history, evidence, or change monitoring. Do not treat a provider’s default as your requirement.
  3. Capture a representative sample. Use the actual viewport or full-page mode, format, quality, and other settings you plan to retain. Include long or unusually image-heavy pages.
  4. Measure the files. Download the sample and calculate its mean file size. Also note a high-percentile size so that unusually large pages do not make your plan too optimistic.
  5. Multiply and budget for copies. Apply the formula to your planned capture count, then add separate allowances for exports, backups, replicas, and storage-system overhead where applicable.
  6. Recheck after changes. A different page set, capture mode, device, format, or quality setting can change the measured average.

Choose hosted retention or your own archive

A hosted archive may be sufficient when its retention period or item quota, export behavior, and deletion controls meet your needs. For a self-managed workflow, capture files can be saved to local storage or S3. A downloaded archive can also live on an external hard drive, but that is optional; size it from your measured files and retention plan rather than buying capacity based on a generic per-screenshot estimate. Cloud storage is another option, but compare the provider’s current storage, request, and retrieval terms before calculating cost.

When comparing services or workflows, check capture cadence, full-page support and page-height limits, formats and quality controls, retention by time or item count, export and deletion behavior, and how many variants a run creates. A screenshot quota alone cannot tell you how many gigabytes you will need.
