There is no single size for a Switch 2 game: requirements vary by title, and updates may increase them. Check the individual game’s Nintendo eShop listing—or its physical packaging—before you buy or download it.
How much space does a Switch 2 game need?
It depends on the game. Nintendo does not give one storage figure that represents its whole catalog, and no catalog-wide average or distribution is established in the official sources cited here. Use the specific listing for the game you want; Nintendo UK notes that requirements can rise when updates are released (Nintendo UK’s digital-games guidance, which labels its examples current as of July 2026).

A concrete example, not an average
Nintendo’s US store lists STARBITES – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition at 20.9 GB and the Nintendo Switch version at 10.5 GB. The Switch 2 Edition listing gives a July 14, 2026 release date. These are figures for those specific editions, not a typical size for other games (Nintendo US store listing).

There is no dependable fixed count: game sizes differ, the console’s full 256 GB is not available for games, and updates or downloadable content can add to storage needs. To estimate your own library, add the sizes shown for the specific games you plan to install, leaving room for system use and future updates. Nintendo describes the console’s 256 GB internal storage on its Switch 2 features page.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Do you need a microSD Express card?
Nintendo Support currently says no individual Switch 2 game requires additional storage space to play. Expansion is therefore not a requirement for playing a particular game under the current guidance; it can help if you want more downloaded games installed at once (Nintendo Support microSD Express FAQ).
Whether a card is useful depends on how much of your library you want available without deleting or redownloading software. Nintendo recommends using one microSD Express card: software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto a single card (Nintendo Support microSD Express FAQ).

Can you use an old Switch SD card?
Not to store or load digital games on Switch 2. Expansion for Switch 2 games requires a microSD Express card; standard microSD cards used with the original Switch are not compatible for that purpose. Nintendo supports cards up to 2 TB that meet the microSD Express standard. The first time you use a card, the console requires an internet system update (Nintendo Support microSD Express FAQ; Nintendo Support Switch 2 FAQ).
What can be stored on the card?
When a microSD Express card is inserted, it becomes the default save location for downloadable software. Downloaded games, software updates, and DLC can be stored on it, but game save data remains in System Memory (Nintendo Support microSD Express FAQ).
