Choose SSD endurance by estimating how much data your workload will write over the time you expect to use the drive, then compare that estimate with the TBW rating and warranty for the exact model and capacity. TBW is a rated write limit used in endurance specifications and sometimes warranty terms; it is not a countdown to the day an SSD will fail.
What TBW says about SSD endurance
TBW means “terabytes written.” It represents the cumulative amount of host data a drive is rated to accept over its endurance period. Manufacturers may also use a model’s TBW limit as one condition of warranty coverage. Check the exact product warranty: its wording, including any time limit or TBW condition, determines eligibility.

TBW is useful for comparing drives only when you account for capacity, workload and warranty period. A larger TBW figure by itself does not mean a drive is the better choice for every buyer, nor does reaching the rating establish that the SSD will immediately stop working.
How to estimate the endurance your workload needs
Estimate your host writes per day, multiply by the number of days you expect to use the drive, and compare the result with the model’s TBW rating. If your write rate varies, use a realistic estimate for your ordinary workload and account for unusually write-heavy periods rather than assuming every user has the same daily total.

- REACH THE NEXT LEVEL: Gen4 steps up with faster transfer speeds and high-performance bandwidth; With a more than 55% improvement in random performance compared to 980 PRO, it’s here for heavy computing and faster loading
- THE FASTEST SSD FROM THE WORLD'S FLASH MEMORY BRAND: The speed you need for any occasion; With read and write speeds up to 7450/6900 MB/s you’ll reach near max performance of PCIe 4.0 powering through for any use
- PLAY WITHOUT LIMITS: Give yourself some space with storage capacities from 1TB to 4TB; Sync all your saves and reign supreme in gaming, video editing, data analysis and more
- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
- Estimate daily writes. Use the amount of data your applications and files write to the SSD, not its capacity or the amount of data you read.
- Set your intended service period. Multiply daily writes by the days in that period to estimate cumulative host writes.
- Compare with the exact drive’s rating. Check the specification for your chosen capacity and the current warranty for your region.
For a rough calculation of years until a rating would be reached under a steady write rate: TBW ÷ daily writes in TB ÷ 365. This is arithmetic based on the assumed rate, not a prediction of physical failure or a guarantee of warranty coverage.
What DWPD means—and how it relates to TBW
DWPD means “drive writes per day.” It expresses how many times the drive’s full capacity can be written each day during a stated warranty period. Kingston’s illustrative example is 1 DWPD over a five-year warranty: the drive could be written to its full capacity each day across that period. Kingston describes the metric as calculating “how many times a drive can be fully written to, per day, over its warrantied lifespan.” This is an example for interpreting DWPD, not a universal recommendation. - Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write

Because DWPD is relative to capacity and a stated warranty interval, compare it alongside both. TBW totals from different capacities or warranty periods are not directly equivalent measures of the daily write workload a drive is rated for.

Why workload and drive design affect endurance
Write-heavy work consumes endurance faster
General productivity and read-heavy use usually place less write demand on an SSD than sustained recording, large write jobs or write-heavy databases. Your software and usage pattern matter more than a generic label such as “personal use”; estimate the workload you actually expect.

Host writes are not the whole internal picture
NAND flash has finite program/erase endurance. An SSD controller distributes wear and performs background work, and write amplification can mean that internal NAND writes exceed the data the host sends to the drive. Workload patterns and over-provisioning affect that behavior, so host-write arithmetic is a useful estimate—not a complete measure of the flash’s internal activity. For a technical explanation, see Western Digital / SanDisk’s SSD endurance brief and Kioxia’s SSD NAND endurance brief.

- SAMSUNG MAGICIAN SOFTWARE: Get the most out of your SSD with Samsung Magician's advanced yet intuitive optimization tools; Monitor drive health, protect valuable data, and receive important updates for your 990 PRO
- Capacity-specific TBW: verify the rating for the exact capacity, not a different size in the same product family.
- Warranty duration and conditions: use the current terms for that model and your region. Some warranties specify both a time period and a TBW limit; the governing warranty wording controls coverage. See, for example, Samsung Semiconductor’s consumer-storage warranty information and SanDisk’s internal SSD endurance and warranty periods.
- Workload fit: for large daily write volumes, consider an endurance class intended for that workload. Enterprise guidance can help explain workload categories, but it does not replace a model’s own rating and warranty. See SanDisk’s enterprise SSD guidance and Samsung Semiconductor’s data-center SSD endurance and usage guidance.
- Price and practical need: for ordinary personal use, estimate your writes instead of automatically paying more for the largest TBW number. The available product information does not establish one minimum TBW that every consumer needs.
Does reaching TBW mean the SSD will fail?
No. TBW is a rated endurance amount, not an exact failure date. Reaching the rating does not prove the drive has failed, and operating beyond it should not be treated as guaranteed safe. Separately, warranty coverage may depend on both the rated amount and the time limit, so check the exact warranty rather than inferring coverage from whether the drive still works.

A manufacturer dashboard or SMART data supported by your SSD can help you inspect reported wear and health. The names and meanings of attributes vary between models and tools; do not treat one field as a universal lifespan countdown. SanDisk provides guidance on SSD endurance and wear information and checking remaining life and endurance for an internal SSD. Use reporting supported for your specific model, and keep backups of important data regardless of the reported wear level.
