Zoom estimates that a standard video recording uses about 200 MB per hour, while a screen-sharing recording uses about 20 MB per hour. These are approximate planning figures, not guaranteed file sizes: duration, resolution and the content being shared affect the result. Zoom’s recording-format guidance gives the estimates.
Estimated Zoom recording size by duration
The figures below extend Zoom’s approximate hourly estimates using simple arithmetic. The two- and three-hour amounts are projections, not separate measurements published by Zoom. Actual files may be larger or smaller. Zoom’s estimates and recording FAQ describe why sizes vary.

Zoom’s FAQ notes that recording files can range from under 1 GB to several GB, but that example is not a typical-size range or a prediction for any specific meeting length.

Zoom identifies duration, resolution and shared content as factors in recording size. A video recording that includes a shared screen is not necessarily the same as a screen-sharing recording: use the 20 MB/hour estimate only for the screen-sharing category Zoom describes, not as a universal rate for every meeting that displays slides or a desktop. Zoom’s recording FAQ discusses variation.

Resolution and layout matter
Zoom’s recorded-video resolution guidance lists possible outcomes of 360p, 720p or 1080p depending on conditions such as participant count, whether video is enabled, camera HD or Full HD settings, meeting HD settings and layout. Shared-screen resolution can also affect the recording frame. Zoom does not publish a universal file-size-per-hour rate for each resolution, so these labels cannot be converted into reliable size promises. See Zoom’s resolution guidance.
Recording Studio is a separate high-quality case
Zoom estimates approximately 2–3 GB per hour at 1080p60 for Recording Studio. That figure applies specifically to this feature within Zoom Webinars Plus and Events; it is not the expected size of an ordinary Zoom video recording. Where recordings are stored—and what to plan for
Computer recordings are saved on the computer, while cloud recordings are stored in Zoom cloud. Zoom describes MP4 video and M4A audio formats for both recording options. Zoom’s recording overview explains the two destinations.

Allow adequate free space on the computer’s local drive. Zoom recommends keeping the default local recording location; external drives, network storage and cloud-sync folders can lead to saving or conversion problems. After a recording is complete, its files can be uploaded to services such as Dropbox or Google Drive for archiving. Zoom’s computer-recording guidance covers storage location and file handling.

Cloud recordings
Cloud recording uses account-level storage allocations, with additional storage options described by Zoom. Storage is pooled at the account level. If the storage limit is reached while a recording is underway, Zoom says the meeting continues recording until it ends. Allocations and add-on details can change, so check your account’s available capacity and Zoom’s current cloud-storage information before relying on a quota or purchasing additional storage.
Cloud recordings can be streamed or downloaded after processing. Zoom says processing generally takes about twice the recorded duration, though it can take up to 24 hours during periods of higher processing load. That is a processing-time estimate, not a multiplier for the recording’s file size. Zoom’s cloud-recording instructions explain processing and access.
