Charging for a PC build isn’t just “parts + labor.” In 2024, the real cost is figuring out what the client actually wants, how complicated the hardware is (airflow, cables, BIOS quirks), and how much troubleshooting you’ll likely absorb if something doesn’t work on first power-on.
This guide gives you a practical way to calculate a quote you can defend—whether you’re building from scratch, doing a parts install, or selling a turnkey system with testing and documentation.

Why PC Build Pricing Gets Tricky
Two builds with the same CPU can take wildly different time depending on motherboard features, case clearance, RAM speed targets, AIO vs air cooling, cable management standards, and the client’s expectations (RGB, Wi‑Fi, OS setup, and benchmarks).

#1 Best Overall
- The original electronics toolkit: Designed for computer, smartphone, tablet, and gaming repair, backed by thousands of free instructions.
- Intentional selection: All the tools you need. A 64 precision bit driver set, tweezers, flex extension, opening tools, and anti-static wristband.
- Secure design: Magnetic case and foam insert ensure secure storage and transportation. Additionally, the inside of the lid serves as a sorting/organization tray.
- Lifetime Warranty: We'll replace anything that breaks, as long as you own it.
Define the Scope Before You Quote
Your price should be anchored to deliverables. If you skip this, you’ll lose margin to “small extras” like driver installs, Windows transfer, RAID setup, or “can you just update the BIOS.”
Typical deliverables you should list
- Assembly (install CPU, cooler, RAM, GPU, storage, PSU cabling)
- Initial boot + component checks (POST, BIOS detection, temps sanity)
- BIOS/firmware updates if required for compatibility
- OS installation (Windows 11 or Linux) and base driver set
- Updates + stability test (e.g., 30–60 minutes load testing)
- Networking setup (Ethernet + Wi‑Fi, router basics)
- Benchmark/verification (optional: 3DMark/Cinebench runs)
- Documentation (spec sheet, BIOS version, drivers used)
Clarify what is NOT included
Most disputes come from undefined boundaries. Put exclusions in writing: client-supplied parts with unknown compatibility, OS licensing, corrupted installers, missing Wi‑Fi drivers, or refunds for non-returns of defective parts.
Prerequisites: What You Need to Know First
Before you calculate labor, collect these details from the client. A 10-minute intake prevents a 3-hour redo.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInformation to request
- Exact parts list (brand + model) or at least CPU/GPU/case/PSU and storage sizes
- Target OS (Windows 11, Linux distro)
- Budget and whether they want overclocking/XMP/EXPO enabled
- Case type and whether it’s using an open-air bench or a “real” tempered-glass case
- Any special requirements: quiet build, SFF (small form factor), vertical GPU mount, custom cables, RGB ecosystem
- Do they need data migration? If yes: source drive type (SATA/NVMe), capacity, and backup status
- Testing expectations: “it boots” vs stability + thermals under load
Common Pricing Models (and When to Use Each)
Pick a model that matches your workflow and your risk tolerance. Most builders do better with a hybrid: a fixed labor base + clearly priced extras.
1) Labor-only (customer buys parts)
You charge for assembly, testing, and setup labor. This works well when clients have a validated parts list and you can verify compatibility before starting.
2) Parts pass-through + labor
You purchase parts for them and bill you cost + labor. Many clients prefer this because it reduces mistakes and coordination, but you still need a handling fee.
3) Parts + markup + turnkey labor
You sell the system as a complete product. This is simplest for the client but requires stricter inventory/control, clear return policies, and proper margins to cover DOA/RMA delays.

How to Estimate Build Time in 2024
Time estimates should reflect real friction: cable routing, cooler clearance, BIOS behavior, and driver setup. Use the ranges below as baseline, then adjust.
Baseline time ranges (typical custom build)
| Component/Stage | Typical Time | What Makes It Longer |
|---|---|---|
| Planning + compatibility check | 0.5–1.5 hours | Unclear parts list, SFF, nonstandard PSU/case constraints |
| Build + cable management | 2–4 hours | Dense cases, modded front panels, custom cable routing |
| BIOS setup + stability sanity checks | 0.5–2 hours | RAM tuning, EXPO/XMP issues, GPU fan curve setup |
| OS install + drivers | 1–3 hours | Windows issues, missing chipset drivers, Wi‑Fi/BT driver problems |
| Testing (temps/load) + verification | 0.5–1.5 hours | Client expects benchmarking, multiple monitors, unusual workloads |
Typical total for a “clean” build: about 4–8 hours.

- IFIXIT QUALITY: These 16 precision-bits (4 mm) are made of high-quality S2 steel. The precisely machined bits fit properly into the screws and protect both the bit and the fasteners from damages.
Typical total for a “messy” build (unknown parts compatibility, stubborn RAM, OS transfer): 8–14 hours.
Adjust your estimate with a quick complexity score
- +1 hour if it’s SFF (small form factor) or unusual cooler clearance
- +1 hour for cable-heavy cases or vertical GPU setups
- +1 hour if the client wants Windows migrated from an old drive
- +1 hour if EXPO/XMP tuning is required for stability
- +1 hour if you must troubleshoot DOA/RMA replacement parts
Labor Rate Benchmarks You Can Actually Use
Rates vary by region and your experience level, but you can anchor to a simple framework: hourly labor + risk margin + minimum job fee.
Practical benchmark ranges (2024)
- Entry-friendly install jobs (RAM/SSD/GPU swap): $50–$120 total minimum
- Standard desktop custom build: $100–$200 labor minimum + $30–$80/hour equivalent
- Higher-risk or higher-complexity builds (SFF, extensive testing, OS migration): $200–$400+ minimum + $50–$110/hour equivalent
If you’re quoting under $100 total for a “from parts list to working system with drivers,” you’ll often lose money once you include time for planning, troubleshooting, and rework.
Parts Pricing: Pass-Through vs Markup vs Bundled Pricing
Labor is one thing. Parts pricing is where builders accidentally undercharge or get stuck in returns and RMAs.
Pass-through (customer buys parts, you assemble)
You don’t need a big parts margin, but you should charge for your compatibility check time and your risk. Consider a compatibility verification fee if the client supplied a “wish list” rather than a final list.
Pass-through (you buy parts for them)
Charge a handling fee to cover time and small-cost overhead (tax differences, shipping issues, sorting). A common structure is “cost + $X” per build, not just free buying.
Markup (you sell a turnkey system)
Markup depends on your local market, but it should cover: part availability risk, DOA replacements, and the fact that clients expect you to handle the messy parts of getting it working.
Whatever you choose, disclose it. Transparency lowers the chance of disputes later.
Turnkey Pricing Templates (Use These to Quote)
Below are ready-to-use templates. Swap in your hour estimate and your local labor rate.
Template A: Labor-only fixed fee (good for simple builds)
Best when the client has a validated parts list and you’re not migrating data.

Worksheet inputs
- Estimated build hours (H)
- Your hourly labor rate (R)
- Minimum job fee (M)
- Risk buffer (RB) as a flat amount or %
- Fixed included costs: imaging media, thermal paste, small supplies
Simple pricing formula
| Line | Formula |
|---|---|
| Labor subtotal | max(M, H × R) |
| Risk buffer | Labor subtotal × RB% (or fixed) |
| Included testing/OS | Either included in labor or add a fixed amount |
| Extras | Data migration, custom cables, bench testing, paid by approved hours |
| Taxes/fees | Follow your local rules |
In practice, many builders use RB% around 10–25% for standard builds, and higher if the client provides uncertain parts or expects OS migration.
Edge Cases That Change Your Price
Some jobs aren’t “hard” because of the build; they’re hard because of what can break. Price these explicitly.
BIOS and RAM stability
EXPO/XMP instability costs time. If the client insists on a specific DDR5 speed that doesn’t boot reliably, treat it like an overclock tuning request and charge for the extra troubleshooting.
Small form factor (SFF)
Even experienced builders spend more time on cable routing, cooler clearance, and managing airflow. Add time rather than just charging the same labor fee.
Windows 11 activation and data migration
If you’re moving an existing Windows installation, failures aren’t always your fault. Require the client to back up important data and clarify that you’re not a data recovery service.
Custom loops, modded cases, and proprietary connectors
Hard tubing, pump/reservoir tuning, and case mods can turn into multiple-day projects. Quote higher and often switch to hourly with a cap.
Client-supplied parts with unknown history
If the client buys used parts, expect a higher failure rate. Treat DOA troubleshooting time as separate or pre-approved.

What to Charge for Install-Only Jobs
Install-only is common: GPU swap, new SSD, adding RAM, swapping a PSU, or fixing “won’t boot.” Keep these profitable by pricing for diagnosis plus re-test, not just screw time.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Typical install-only pricing structure
- Simple swap (RAM/SSD/GPU with known compatibility): $50–$120 flat
- Swap with troubleshooting (no post/driver crashes/power issues): $100–$200+ minimum
- OS tasks (reinstall, drivers, boot repair): add $75–$200 depending on scope
If the client expects you to “fix” a vague issue, you’re doing support work. Diagnose first, then quote to proceed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Warranty, Risk, and Liability: Price the Uncertainty
You can’t control DOA parts or compatibility edge cases, so you price the uncertainty. That doesn’t mean being greedy—it means avoiding “free” labor caused by ambiguity.
Build a clear service policy
- Define what counts as “completed” (boots, temps within range, OS installed, drivers loaded)
- Define time boundaries (e.g., included testing is 30–60 minutes)
- Clarify what you do if a part is defective (stop-and-replace process)
- State your RMA coordination rules (client handles manufacturer contact or you do)
Set inspection expectations
Even if you assemble everything correctly, you need an inspection step. If you can’t test a component before assembly, disclose it and price accordingly.
How to Handle Troubleshooting Without Eating Your Margin
Troubleshooting is where jobs become expensive. The fix is not “don’t troubleshoot.” The fix is “charge for it when it exceeds the included scope.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use an included troubleshooting window
- Included: up to 1 hour for first-boot issues and straightforward BIOS/driver fixes
- After included window: billed hourly or via an approved troubleshooting package
Require approval for major deviations
Example: If the system won’t boot, and you suspect a faulty PSU or RAM kit, stop and request approval before replacing anything beyond included troubleshooting.
Keep a troubleshooting log
Even a basic checklist helps: components installed, BIOS version, memory settings (EXPO on/off), and what tests you ran. It also helps you defend your time if a client disputes charges.
Where to Publish Your Rates and How to Write a Quote
Clients don’t just compare prices—they compare clarity. Publish service tiers, not vague “PC repair” blurbs.
Suggested quote format (short and client-friendly)
- What you’re building/doing (parts list attached, or OS + deliverables)
- What’s included (assembly, BIOS/driver install, stability test duration)
- What’s extra (data migration, added troubleshooting, custom cables)
- Timeline estimate (e.g., 2–5 business days depending on build type)
- Approval policy if troubleshooting exceeds included time
- Total price or formula
If you use a marketplace, keep your listing consistent with your quote template so you don’t get surprised by mismatched expectations.

Option 1: Assisted build (remote guidance)
You can charge less by doing remote compatibility checks, step-by-step build guidance, and a “screen-share troubleshooting” session. Make it clear this isn’t a warranty-backed repair.
Option 2: Partial assembly
For complex rigs, you can assemble most components and have the client finish cable routing or OS setup. Price it as phased labor with milestones.
Option 3: Diagnostic-first pricing
For “won’t boot” problems, charge for diagnostics, present findings, then quote the repair path. This avoids you building a PC that the client might refuse to proceed with after troubleshooting.
FAQ
What should I charge to build a PC from scratch in 2024?
A common approach is a minimum labor fee plus a per-hour labor component. For many standard desktop builds, that often lands roughly in the $250–$700 labor range depending on complexity and whether OS setup + stability testing are included.
Should I charge per hour or a fixed price?
Fixed price works best for well-defined, low-ambiguity builds with a validated parts list. Hourly (with an included troubleshooting window and a cap) works better for “mystery” problems, SFF builds, and OS/data migration.
How much should I charge for troubleshooting?
Include a small troubleshooting window in your base fee (often 1 hour). After that, bill hourly or use a troubleshooting package with clear outcomes, like “boots successfully to desktop + driver baseline + temp check.”
Do I charge extra for Windows 11?
You can, but separate the service from the license. Many builders include OS install and driver setup in the labor fee, then charge extra for data migration, boot repair, or licensing/activation support if it becomes complicated.
Is it okay to charge a compatibility check fee?
Yes, especially if the client hasn’t provided a final list. If you spend 1–2 hours validating parts, building a checklist, and confirming clearance and power requirements, that’s billable work.
How do I price DOA or RMA delays?
Either price a separate DOA handling fee, limit included troubleshooting time, or bill additional labor if the job extends beyond your original scope. Be explicit: RMAs aren’t instant, and waiting is time you’re paying for.
Bottom Line
To charge the right amount for building a PC in 2024, anchor your quote to deliverables, estimate realistic hours (including troubleshooting and OS setup), and protect your margin with a risk buffer and a clearly defined included troubleshooting window.
If you keep your scope tight and your policies written, you’ll be fair to clients and profitable for yourself—without constant re-negotiation when a build gets complicated.
