How Much Should Developers Trust AI-Generated Code? A Practical FAQ

AI-generated code can help complete work, but it deserves no automatic trust. Verify the requirement, test independent failure cases, inspect security and dependencies, and keep a human developer accountable.

Treat AI-generated code as an unverified draft. Trust it only after you understand what it does, confirm that it meets the actual requirement, test behavior beyond the examples it came with, and inspect security-sensitive changes and dependencies. A successful build or a fluent explanation is not proof of correctness. A developer who approves the change remains responsible for it.

This is not a claim that AI-written code is inherently unsafe—or reliably safe. Evidence varies by task and study, and the practical standard is the same one used for other software changes: verify the behavior and risks before accepting the code.

What does it mean to trust AI-generated code?

Trust is not a single yes-or-no judgment. A useful question is whether you have enough evidence to accept a particular change for a particular project and use. The answer depends on what the code is supposed to do, what could go wrong, which checks have been run, and whether someone responsible can explain and maintain it.

AI-generated code can be syntactically convincing, compile successfully, and still miss an important requirement. It may fit the immediate prompt but conflict with project architecture, bypass an existing constraint, weaken a test, or introduce a dependency that nobody intended to add. GitHub’s guidance on reviewing AI-generated code recommends checking intent and architecture, then running automated tests and static analysis. Those checks are useful evidence, not a substitute for understanding the change.

A practical trust decision therefore has several dimensions: functional correctness against the specification; security and threat-model coverage; the quality and independence of tests; fit with existing design; dependency and license risk; and whether a developer understands and owns the change. Task completion time is another useful measure, but it answers a different question from safety or quality.

How should developers review AI-generated code?

Review the change as a proposed implementation, not as an authoritative answer. The process below follows the order that tends to reveal problems efficiently: establish what the change is meant to accomplish, run the project’s normal checks, then probe the gaps those checks leave.

1. Compare the change with the requirement

  • Read the issue, specification, or acceptance criteria before relying on the assistant’s description. Identify the expected behavior and any explicit constraints.
  • Inspect the full diff, including edits to tests, configuration, dependency manifests, and security-related files. Look for removed tests, weakened assertions, changed defaults, or an existing safeguard that has been bypassed.
  • Check whether the implementation follows the project’s architecture and conventions. A locally plausible solution can still create a maintenance problem if it duplicates an existing component or changes an interface unexpectedly.
  • Trace the behavior yourself. If you cannot explain what the code does, what assumptions it makes, and how it fails, you do not yet have a sound basis to approve it.

2. Run the project’s usual engineering checks

Build or compile the change, run the relevant unit, integration, and end-to-end tests, review new warnings, and use suitable static analysis. GitHub Docs advises: “Always run automated tests and static analysis tools first.” A passing run establishes that the code passed those particular checks in that environment; it does not establish that untested behavior is correct or secure.

For work with meaningful security implications, NIST’s developer-verification guidance also identifies activities such as threat modeling, secret checks, fuzzing, and reviewing included libraries and services. Choose checks appropriate to the change rather than treating any single scanner or test suite as a complete security review.

3. Add tests that challenge the implementation’s assumptions

Do not stop at tests supplied with the generated code. Add or run independent cases for invalid input, boundary values, unauthorized access, malformed payloads, and concurrency when those conditions are relevant to the feature. Check that the test asserts the required outcome rather than merely reproducing the implementation’s assumptions.

Inspect test changes as carefully as production code. A suite can look extensive while deleting an old case, weakening an assertion, relying on excessive mocking, or exercising only the happy path. Tests are strongest when they are derived from the requirement and can expose a mistake in the implementation—not when they simply confirm that the implementation behaves as its author expected.

4. Trace security-sensitive behavior and dependencies

Follow data from its source to its use and identify trust boundaries. Check whether the code validates input and enforces authorization where required. Give particular attention to authentication, authorization, deserialization, cryptographic operations, secrets, and security-critical files; OWASP recommends focused review or testing in these areas.

Review every added package or service. Confirm that a package exists, that its identity and provenance are what the change expects, that it is maintained, and that its license is compatible with the project. Generated suggestions can name nonexistent or suspicious packages, so do not run an install command just because it appears in a plausible answer. Inspect the dependency change and determine why it is needed.

5. Check the assistant’s permissions and information exposure

When an AI agent can act on a repository or run commands, restrict its privileges to what the task requires. Review what project context is sent to the assistant and exclude secrets or sensitive files where possible. The exact controls depend on the tool and configuration; consult current product documentation before relying on a named assistant’s safeguards, since capabilities can change.

6. Keep a human owner accountable

A named developer should understand and approve the change before merge and remain responsible for maintaining it. If nobody can explain the behavior or answer for a future bug, the code has not earned trust simply because an assistant produced it or a reviewer clicked approve.

Can developers trust AI-generated tests?

Not as independent proof of security when the same AI agent generated both the implementation and its tests. OWASP warns that this arrangement can cause the tests to share the implementation’s assumptions and miss the same weaknesses. A passing AI-written test suite is evidence about the cases it covers, not proof that the code is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep test quality separate from test quantity. Useful review questions include whether the tests came from the requirement, whether they cover failure and boundary conditions, whether assertions are strong enough to detect incorrect behavior, and whether prior coverage was removed or diluted. Where impact is high, add independent human-designed cases and appropriate security testing.

Is AI-generated code secure?

There is no defensible universal answer. Security depends on the task, the implementation, the surrounding system, and the checks performed. The available evidence does not support treating generated code as either automatically insecure or reliably secure across projects and models.

A 2024 IEEE/ACM ICSE user study involved 25 participants working on security-related programming problems with GitHub Copilot. The researchers reported that access to Copilot accompanied more secure solutions on harder problems, while they observed no security effect on an easier problem and no disproportionate effect on particular vulnerability types. They also said more research was needed on technically complex problems with security requirements. This is a bounded result from that study, not a guarantee about production systems or other assistants.

For a specific change, assess the actual security properties that matter: whether access checks are enforced, untrusted inputs are handled appropriately, sensitive data is protected, and the design addresses relevant threats. A general statement that an assistant is secure—or a clean test run—cannot replace that assessment.

What does the productivity evidence show?

Speed and quality are separate outcomes. A productivity result does not establish code correctness, maintainability, or security, so teams should not use faster completion as a proxy for safer code.

A Microsoft Research preprint published in June 2025 reported three field experiments at Microsoft, Accenture, and an anonymous Fortune 100 company. Across 4,867 developers, the combined estimate was a 26.08% increase in completed tasks among developers with an AI coding assistant, with a standard error of 10.3%. The authors described the individual experiments as noisy. The result concerns task completion in those settings; it is not a 26.08% improvement in code quality or security and should not be generalized beyond what those experiments measured.

A 2024 qualitative study interviewed 27 software professionals and reviewed 190 relevant Reddit posts and comments. It described security and quality concerns alongside widespread use of AI assistants for security-related work. Those interviews and posts can illuminate practices and concerns, but they are not a representative survey of all developers.

How should teams compare AI-assisted and non-AI workflows?

Compare like with like: the same kind of task in the same environment, using measures that include both outcomes and review cost. Speed alone, or the number of tests that pass, is too narrow for an adoption decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Measure What to examine
Functional correctness Whether behavior meets the same requirements and acceptance criteria.
Security Security findings and coverage of the threats relevant to the task.
Test quality Independent coverage, meaningful assertions, and treatment of failure cases.
Maintainability Fit with project architecture, conventions, and future ownership.
Dependencies Package identity, provenance, maintenance, and license risk.
Developer ownership Whether the responsible developer understands and can maintain the change.
Time Task completion time, considered alongside the review and verification work required.

These dimensions reflect GitHub’s review guidance, OWASP’s secure-coding guidance, NIST’s verification guidance, and the limits of the cited productivity evidence. A workflow that completes tasks sooner may still require additional review effort, and a workflow with passing tests may still have security gaps.

What is a sensible approval threshold?

There is no single test result that makes every generated change safe to merge. Match the evidence to the consequences of failure. A small, reversible change with low impact may need the ordinary project review and checks; a change touching authentication, authorization, sensitive data, cryptography, deserialization, or other critical paths warrants focused review and more deliberate testing.

  • Accept when the requirement is clear, you can explain the change, relevant checks pass, important failure cases have been considered, and dependencies and security implications are understood.
  • Revise and review again when the approach is plausible but tests are missing, assumptions are unclear, architecture fit is poor, or a dependency needs investigation.
  • Reject or redesign when the change bypasses a required control, cannot be explained, introduces an unjustified or unverified dependency, or leaves a high-impact security behavior unresolved.

This is a decision aid, not a certification. Project policy and the risk of the affected system still govern the actual approval process.
