There is no single best zram size for every Linux system. If you use systemd zram-generator, a reasonable starting point is its documented default: half of usable RAM, capped at 4 GiB. That is the generator’s default—not a Linux-wide rule—and it sets the zram device’s logical capacity, not the amount of physical RAM reserved immediately.
What zram size actually controls
zram is a Linux compressed-RAM block device, commonly configured as swap. Data written to it is compressed and kept in memory; zram is not additional physical memory. The device’s configured capacity is a logical limit. Its pages consume resident RAM as they are stored, with the amount depending on how compressible the data is and on implementation overhead. This distinction matters when choosing a size: a 4 GiB zram device does not reserve 4 GiB of physical RAM at setup, nor does it guarantee 4 GiB of efficiently usable swap. A larger capacity provides room for more compressed data, but actual benefit depends on the data and workload.

For systems using systemd zram-generator, the documented default is min(ram / 2, 4096), where ram is measured in MiB. In plain terms, that is half of usable RAM up to a 4 GiB device. The following are arithmetic examples of that formula, not benchmarked recommendations:

The systemd project’s example configuration says fractions from 0.1 to 0.5 are recommended and illustrates min(ram / 10, 2048). A lower fraction can be a sensible starting choice if you want to keep potential resident-memory use conservative. Neither the default nor the example fraction establishes an ideal for every workload.
Separate device capacity from resident-memory use
systemd zram-generator provides two distinct controls. zram-size sets the logical device capacity; zram-resident-limit sets a cap on resident memory consumed by the device. The generator’s documented default for zram-resident-limit is 0, meaning no limit. If controlling zram’s physical-memory use is important, consider that setting separately rather than assuming the device size is a memory cap. How large is too large?
The kernel documentation says, “There is little point creating a zram of greater than twice the size of memory since we expect a 2:1 compression ratio.” This is kernel guidance based on an expected compression ratio, not a promise that your files or workload will compress at 2:1. Compression varies, so do not interpret a device twice the size of RAM as guaranteed usable capacity.

These settings also depend on how zram is managed. The systemd generator can create zram devices for swap or filesystems, but its formula and defaults apply to that generator, not to every Linux distribution or configuration. Check which manager your system uses before copying a systemd-specific setting; the generator overview describes its scope.

Choose and evaluate a setting for your workload
When comparing candidate sizes, consider the device’s capacity relative to usable RAM, any resident-memory cap, how compressible your workload is, and the CPU and performance behavior you observe on your system. The official documentation provides defaults and general guidance, but it does not establish a universally best fraction or provide workload-specific benchmark results. Avoid treating a larger device as a guarantee of better responsiveness or protection from out-of-memory conditions.
