For one FFmpeg process looping a local file and sending it to YouTube Live, 2 GB of RAM is a cautious practical starting point on a minimal Linux VPS. A lean 1 GB VPS may work if FFmpeg stream-copies compatible audio and video without filters, but it leaves less room for the operating system and support processes. These are workload-based rules of thumb—not official FFmpeg or YouTube requirements or benchmark results.
If FFmpeg re-encodes video, applies filters, handles a demanding source, or shares the VPS with other services, test with more headroom. RAM is only one constraint: CPU must keep up with encoding, and the network must sustain the upload.
Why 2 GB is a cautious starting point, not a guarantee
Neither FFmpeg’s documentation nor YouTube’s cited live-streaming guidance sets a universal VPS RAM minimum for a single loop stream. The 2 GB starting point is a practical allowance for a minimal Linux system running FFmpeg and basic support processes. It is not a published requirement, and the research for this article did not test a VPS configuration.
A 1 GB VPS can be viable for a lean workload, particularly when FFmpeg copies already-compatible encoded audio and video. Its tighter memory budget leaves less margin for the operating system, monitoring, reconnect supervision, and anything else on the VM. Choose based on the actual command and source, then measure the running workload rather than treating a number as a guarantee.

How your FFmpeg command changes the memory picture
Stream copy: less processing than re-encoding
With -c copy, FFmpeg passes compatible encoded streams through rather than decoding and encoding video again. This avoids the video-encoding work of a re-encode, but does not make every source, command, or VPS equivalent. The media still needs to be suitable for the chosen YouTube ingest path.
Re-encoding and filters: account for more than RAM
A command using an encoder such as libx264 is re-encoding. Decoding, encoding, filters, higher resolution, higher frame rate, or multiple simultaneous streams can increase workload. CPU capacity is particularly important: Google’s live encoding guidance says the encoder must sustain at least real-time speed. More RAM alone will not fix an encoder that cannot keep up. See Google’s live encoding guidance for FFmpeg.

Looping does not mean loading the whole file into memory
FFmpeg looping is an input behavior; it does not require estimating RAM from the media file’s full size. For file-based live output, pace input reading to real time where appropriate. FFmpeg documents -re as equivalent to -readrate 1. Input options apply to the corresponding input, so put options such as -re before that input’s -i, following FFmpeg’s option-scoping rules in the FFmpeg documentation.
How to choose and verify a VPS
- Inspect the command. Check whether it uses
-c copyor a video encoder, and note filters, audio processing, resolution, frame rate, and the number of concurrent streams. - Pick an initial allocation with headroom. For one lean stream-copy process on a minimal Linux image, 2 GB is a cautious starting point; 1 GB is a tighter option to validate. Allow for the OS, monitoring, a supervisor or reconnect logic, and any other workloads.
- Run the intended stream configuration. Test the actual source file, loop behavior, output settings, and ingest path on the candidate VPS. Observe FFmpeg’s resident memory and the operating system’s available memory while the stream runs, including after the file loops and after an extended period.
- Use FFmpeg’s benchmark output cautiously. The
-benchmarkoption can report maximum memory on supported systems, but FFmpeg warns that this reporting is unsupported on some systems and may show zero. Treat it as one diagnostic, not a universal measurement. - Check YouTube stream health separately. Confirm the chosen ingest path’s supported codecs, audio/video presence, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe/GOP settings. YouTube’s Live API health diagnostics cover configuration and delivery issues; a healthy memory reading does not establish that stream settings are correct, and a stream warning does not by itself prove low RAM.
- Upgrade when measurements show pressure. Add memory headroom if the process approaches the host limit or is terminated under memory pressure. If encoding falls behind, investigate CPU capacity and settings too; if delivery is unstable, check sustained upload capacity and provider transfer limits.
What to compare between VPS plans
Do not judge plans on advertised RAM alone. Compare the resources and operating conditions that determine whether your particular stream can run continuously.

| Factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Memory | Allocated RAM and measured spare capacity after Linux, FFmpeg, and support processes are running. |
| CPU | CPU model or share, stream-copy versus software or hardware encoding, and whether the actual workload sustains real-time output. |
| Stream workload | Resolution, frame rate, filters, audio transformations, and number of concurrent streams. |
| Network | Sustained upload capacity and transfer limits relative to the outgoing stream bitrate. |
| Operations and location | Restart supervision, reconnect behavior, monitoring, VM region, and the provider’s current plan specifications and price. |
Provider offerings change, so verify current specifications before purchasing. A plan cannot be called sufficient without matching its CPU, memory, and network limits to the actual stream.
Separate RAM problems from stream-configuration problems
YouTube Live health diagnostics can flag issues involving codecs, missing audio or video, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and backup-stream consistency. These are delivery or configuration checks, not a VPS memory sizing guide. For the corresponding GOP warnings, YouTube’s Live API guidance identifies keyframe frequency of four seconds or less as the target. Check the Live API documentation for the applicable health issue and your ingest setup.

If you use YouTube HLS ingestion specifically, its requirements are distinct from ordinary VPS RAM sizing. Google’s HLS ingestion guide describes supported frame rates up to 60 fps, closed GOP, and HLS segments recommended at one to four seconds and no longer than five seconds. Do not treat those delivery settings as evidence of a memory requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common symptoms and what to check
- FFmpeg is terminated or memory is near the host limit: inspect process resident memory and system available memory under the real workload; reduce competing services or move to a VPS with more headroom.
- The stream falls behind during re-encoding: check whether the encoder sustains real-time speed and review CPU capacity and encoding settings. Adding RAM alone may not solve a CPU bottleneck.
- YouTube reports a stream health warning: inspect the specific codec, audio/video, bitrate, frame-rate, keyframe/GOP, or backup-stream issue. Do not infer low RAM from the warning alone.
- Delivery drops despite comfortable memory readings: check sustained upload capacity, transfer limits, and reconnect behavior; memory readings cannot confirm network reliability.
- Benchmark memory output is zero or unavailable: FFmpeg notes that maximum-memory reporting is unsupported on some systems. Use process and system monitoring during the actual run instead of assuming zero means no memory use.
