Choose a board with at least the amount the software documents, then allow for the applications and services you plan to run at the same time. For a concrete example, Home Assistant’s current Raspberry Pi installation guide specifies a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 with at least 2 GB of RAM.
How much RAM does a Raspberry Pi project actually need?
Start with the requirements for the exact software and board, not a general-purpose rule of thumb. A simple, single-purpose project may need less memory than a desktop setup or a board running several services concurrently. The official sources cited here do not set one minimum for all headless builds, desktop browsing, containers, local AI, or camera analytics.
Use these checks when comparing configurations:
- Software minimum: Find the documented RAM requirement and confirm that the software supports your Raspberry Pi model and operating system.
- Concurrent workload: Account for the applications or services you expect to keep running together.
- Memory-intensive tasks: Desktop use, image processing, containers, and similar workloads can change what is suitable. Check the specific software and workload rather than relying on a universal threshold.
- Available board configuration: Compare the requirement with the RAM options for the exact board you are considering.
How much RAM do I need for Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi?
Home Assistant’s current installation guidance calls for a Raspberry Pi 4 or Raspberry Pi 5 with at least 2 GB of RAM. See the Home Assistant Raspberry Pi installation guide for its current requirements.
Home Assistant recommends an A2 microSD card of at least 32 GB as well. That is storage capacity, not RAM. The card holds the operating system and data; it does not satisfy the 2 GB memory requirement.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Home Assistant also recommends Home Assistant Green as a plug-and-play option for most people. Its guide describes a Raspberry Pi as a good choice if you already have suitable hardware or want to run additional services.
What RAM configurations are available?
RAM options depend on the Raspberry Pi model. These capacities are board configurations, not measurements of how much memory a particular project uses.

| Board or family | RAM configurations documented | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 4 Model B | 1 GB, 2 GB, 3 GB, 4 GB, and 8 GB | Raspberry Pi 4 Model B specifications |
| Raspberry Pi Zero and Zero 2 W variants | 512 MB | Raspberry Pi hardware documentation |
| Raspberry Pi 5 | 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB | Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation |
Confirm the current configuration for the exact model before buying. Raspberry Pi’s setup guide identifies Pi 5 as the choice for most users, but the appropriate RAM tier still depends on the workload.
Can I upgrade Raspberry Pi RAM later?
Plan to choose the RAM configuration when you choose the board. The cited Raspberry Pi specifications list memory as part of the board configuration; they do not describe it as a user-upgradeable component. If your needs may grow, choose a supported configuration that fits the software requirements and likely concurrent workload from the start.

RAM and microSD storage are different decisions
RAM is working memory used while programs run. A microSD card provides storage for the operating system, applications, and files. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation recommends at least 32 GB of storage for Raspberry Pi OS desktop and at least 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite. Those are card-capacity recommendations, not RAM requirements. Home Assistant’s 32 GB A2 card recommendation is also for storage.
Check both specifications independently: enough RAM for the workload, and enough storage for the operating system and data. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation explains its operating-system setup guidance.

How to choose a configuration for your project
- Identify the software and OS. Find the software’s published memory minimum and supported Raspberry Pi models.
- List what will run together. Include the desktop environment, applications, containers, or other services you expect to use concurrently.
- Account for demanding tasks. For local AI or computer vision, requirements depend on the model, resolution, runtime, and hardware acceleration; do not assume one RAM figure applies to all such projects.
- Match the requirement to a board option. Compare the exact board’s available capacities and select a configuration that meets the software’s minimum.
- Choose storage separately. Select a microSD card based on the operating system and data needs; do not treat its capacity as a measure of RAM.
