No—not on a standard Raspberry Pi board. Its RAM is fixed to the board configuration, with no slot for a PC-style memory stick. To get more RAM, you generally replace the whole board with a higher-memory model. Embedded projects can choose a differently configured Compute Module, but that means selecting a compatible module for its carrier board—not adding RAM to one already installed.
Why you can’t add RAM to a standard Raspberry Pi
Standard Raspberry Pi boards do not provide a user-upgradeable RAM socket. A DDR3 or DDR4 DIMM or SODIMM bought for a desktop or laptop is not a way to expand one. The memory capacity is part of the board’s configuration, so a RAM increase means replacing the board.

That is different from changing storage. A microSD card holds the operating system and files; it does not increase physical RAM. Some Compute Modules also offer eMMC storage, which is likewise separate from RAM.
RAM varies by Raspberry Pi model
Check the exact model before comparing capacities: the maximum for one Raspberry Pi does not apply to every other model. Raspberry Pi’s official computer hardware table lists these configurations:
#1 Best Overall
- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
| Model | Listed RAM configurations |
|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 4 Model B | 1GB, 2GB, 3GB, 4GB, or 8GB |
| Raspberry Pi 5 | 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB |
| Pi 400 | 4GB |
| Pi 500 | 8GB |
| Pi 500+ | 16GB |
The Pi 400, Pi 500, and Pi 500+ are keyboard computers, not boards with a RAM socket. For a regular board, a higher-memory Raspberry Pi 5—such as the 8GB configuration—is a replacement option, not an upgrade part to install on an existing board.
What to check before replacing the board
More RAM may be useful if your workload is running short of memory, but the capacity number alone does not establish how much faster a project will run. Replacing an older board with a newer generation can also change processor performance, ports, power requirements, and accessory compatibility.

- Identify the exact current board and its installed RAM.
- Check whether the candidate board fits your case and works with your power supply, peripherals, and software setup.
- Consider storage separately: determine whether you need a microSD card or, for a Compute Module configuration, eMMC.
- Include any required case, power supply, or accessory changes when comparing the cost of replacing the board.
Compute Modules are a different choice for embedded projects
Raspberry Pi Compute Modules are system-on-module products intended for industrial and embedded applications. Rather than adding memory to a module, a project selects a module configuration that works with its carrier board. Raspberry Pi documents the families and variants on its Compute Module hardware page.

Module fit is not guaranteed just because two products belong to the same family. Check the carrier board, connector, storage and wireless requirements, and the exact RAM/eMMC variant. CM4 and CM5 both use dual 100-pin connectors; Raspberry Pi’s CM4-to-CM5 transition paper says CM5 is pin-compatible with CM4 for most customers, while also documenting project-specific migration considerations and configuration differences. Not every SDRAM/eMMC combination is available.

A SODIMM-shaped Compute Module is not laptop RAM
CM4S uses a physical DDR2 SODIMM form factor, but Raspberry Pi explicitly says the module is not electrically compatible with DDR2 SODIMM specifications. The shape describes the module’s connector format; it does not make the module an ordinary laptop memory stick or make PC RAM a usable upgrade.
Raspberry Pi announced in April 2024 that CM4S, initially available with 1GB, had expanded to 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB variants. The announcement positioned CM4S for industrial customers migrating from earlier Compute Modules; see the announcement. For new designs, Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation recommends CM4S where the SODIMM form factor is needed, or CM4/CM5 for other designs; its documentation states that CM3 and CM3 Lite reached end of life on 16 October 2025.

Can a software setting increase Raspberry Pi RAM?
No. Raspberry Pi’s config.txt memory options describe total_mem as a way to limit how much RAM the system uses. The value is capped at the amount installed on the board: it can reserve less for use, but cannot add memory beyond the hardware configuration.
