How Much RAM Do You Need to Run a Local AI Translator?

There is no universal RAM minimum for local AI translation. Model, precision, runtime, and workload matter; NLLB memory estimates are not whole-computer requirements.

It depends on the translation model and the software running it. As a cautious planning target, 16 GB of total system RAM gives a general-purpose computer more room for a modest local translator and the operating system—but that is not a guaranteed minimum. For a concrete comparison, Hugging Face estimates that NLLB-200 distilled 600M needs 4.25 GB of model memory in float32 or 2.13 GB in float16/bfloat16; those are model-sizing estimates, not measurements of total computer RAM for a complete app.

What the NLLB memory numbers do—and do not—tell you

NLLB-200 distilled 600M is a useful reference point, not a requirement for every offline translator. Hugging Face’s 2023 memory-sizing discussion lists estimates for different numerical precisions:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Precision Estimated model memory
float32 4.25 GB
float16/bfloat16 2.13 GB
int8 1.06 GB
int4 544.49 MB

These are estimates of model/VRAM sizing, not measured peak total system RAM for a particular laptop, operating system, or translator app. The utility says inference may need up to 20% additional memory, which is its caveat rather than a universal measured overhead. Its minimum recommended VRAM assumes model placement with Accelerate/device_map and is based on the largest layer. See Hugging Face’s NLLB memory-sizing discussion.

That distinction matters: a VRAM estimate describes graphics memory in the stated model-placement scenario. A CPU-based app, a different runtime, or a different precision may use memory differently. Total system RAM must also accommodate the operating system, the translator application, and anything else open. The published figure alone cannot guarantee that a computer with the same amount of RAM will run a given setup.

Model download size is not RAM usage

Meta’s NLLB-200 distilled 600M repository is about 2.48 GB on disk. That is the repository’s storage footprint, not the amount of RAM required while translating. Keep enough disk space to download and retain the model, but do not use its file size as a substitute for a runtime memory requirement. Check the model repository files.

The model configuration provides context, not a formula for peak memory: NLLB-200 distilled 600M has 12 encoder and 12 decoder layers, maximum position embeddings of 1,024, and a generation maximum length of 200 in the surfaced configuration. Input length, output length, batching, runtime, and precision all affect actual workload; those settings do not establish a universal peak-RAM figure. View the model configuration.

Smaller offline translators have different footprints

Not every local translator uses a model with NLLB’s footprint. Argos Translate is an open-source offline translation library that installs packages for language pairs. If a direct pair is unavailable, it can pivot through an intermediate language, with potential quality loss. Its documentation does not provide a comparable total-system-RAM figure for every package and setup. Read the Argos Translate documentation.

A 2021 TranslateLocally demonstration paper describes a local-CPU translation application and a tiny English-German Bergamot model with a 15 MB download size. That is a download-size example, not evidence that the application needs only 15 MB of RAM. The paper discusses practical variation in consumer hardware, latency, and model size; it does not establish a universal RAM requirement for local CPU translation. Read the TranslateLocally paper.

Choose a model by more than memory

A model that fits is useful only if it supports the language pair and quality you need. Compare these factors before choosing:

  • Language coverage: Check that your source and target languages are supported, and whether translation is direct or pivots through another language.
  • Quality for your use: Results can vary by language pair and subject area. NLLB’s reported evaluation covered more than 40,000 translation directions and found a 44% BLEU improvement relative to the prior state of the art in the paper’s stated comparison; that benchmark result is not a promise for every pair or domain. Read the NLLB Team’s 2022 paper.
  • Working memory versus download size: Look for memory requirements or a benchmark for the exact app, model, precision, and runtime—not just the model’s file size.
  • Hardware and speed: Confirm whether the app runs on CPU, supports a GPU, and performs acceptably on your hardware. A smaller model may be a trade-off in coverage or translation quality.
  • Offline and privacy needs: Confirm that the selected app and model actually work offline and suit your privacy requirements; “local” describes where inference runs, not a guarantee about every app’s behavior.
  • License: Check the model and application licenses for your intended use.

How to decide whether your computer needs more RAM

  1. Identify the exact app and model. A general label such as “offline translator” is not enough to determine memory needs.
  2. Check its current requirements or measurements. Look for peak system RAM on your operating system and hardware, and note the model precision, input size, and batch conditions if those are given.
  3. Compare with available memory, not just installed memory. Leave room for the operating system and other applications while translating.
  4. Try the actual workload before buying hardware, if possible. Test the languages, text lengths, and document sizes you expect to use. Monitor memory and check whether translation completes reliably.
  5. If upgrading, verify compatibility first. Check your computer’s supported memory type, upgrade limits, and available slots. The model-sizing estimates do not determine which memory module your machine can use.

Without peak total-system-RAM measurements for a named app and workload, no source here establishes a guaranteed minimum for a specific computer. Treat 16 GB as a cautious planning target for a general-purpose machine, not an official NLLB requirement or a guarantee that every translator will work. A smaller or optimized translator may run on less; verify the exact software and model before relying on it.
